The Gods of the Egyptians, Vol. 1 by Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge Pdf

Excerpt from The Gods of the Egyptians, Vol. 1: Or Studies in Egyptian Mythology Hundred gods are mentioned. If to these be added the names of all the mythological beings which occur in the various Books of the Underworld, we shall find that the number of the gods who were recognized by the theologians of the xixth Dynasty at Thebes was about twelve hundred. If all the religious texts of this period from all the religious centres of Egypt were available for study, we should certainly find that the names of hundreds of additional local gods, goddesses, and mythological beings could be collected from them. With such a number of gods to consider, it was impossible for confusion not to arise in the mind of the Egyptian when dealing with them, and the texts prove that he found the gods as difficult to group and classify as the modern investigator. The attributes of hundreds of them were vague and shadowy, and the greater number of them were merely provincial gods, to Whom circumstances had given some transient importance, which resulted in their names being recorded in writing. In fact, the theologian of ancient Egypt found it impossible to form a system of gods which should be consistent in all its parts, and should assign to earth gods, water gods, air gods, village gods, city gods, nome gods, national gods, and foreign gods, the exact position and attributes which were their due in it. From one point of view the modern investigator is more fortunate than the Egyptian theologian, for he has more materials upon which to work, and, as a rule, he is better equipped for his inquiry. The Egyptian knew nothing about the study of comparative religion, and he was sadly hampered by his own methods. Gods Of The Egyptians - 2 Vols by E. A. Wallis Budge Pdf

First published in 2005. By far the most thorough, most useful coverage of the gods of Ancient Egypt is this book by Dr. Budge of the British Museum, one of the foremost Egyptologists of the century. In it is presented practically everything known about the high gods, the local gods, demigods, demons, and mythological figures of Khem. This title is the second volume of a two-part series, which covers research and information on Egyptian mythology and culture. It provides full information on the origins of the ancient religion; its peculiarly Egyptian aspects; evolution of cults, rites, and gods; the priesthoods; the heretical aberration of Ikhnaten and the Aten cult; the cult of Osiris; the Book of the Dead and its rites; the sacred animals and birds; heaven and hell, and much other secret wisdom that has been discovered hidden in mummy cases or written on tomb walls. Richly illustrated, with many reproductions of tomb and mummy-case paintings, with many full texts are presented, with both hieroglyphs and translation. Dr. Budge's book is a standard work in the history of religion. It is also a most useful background book for anyone seriously interested in the life and thought of Ancient Egypt, an explicator of many of the obscurer passages in the Book of Dead.

gods and myths of ancient egypt by robert a armour Pdf

"Robert Armour's classic text, long cherished by a generation of readers, is now complemented with more than 50 new photographs by Egyptologist Edwin Brock and drawings by Elizabeth Rodenbeck that show the gods in their characteristic forms." "Armour maintains a strong narrative thread with illuminating commentary in his lively retelling of stories from Egyptian mythology, including those of the sun god Ra, the tragic tale of Isis and Osiris, the burlesque of Horus' battle with the evil Seth, and the "gods of the intellect" Thoth and Maat. Now with an updated bibliography and new appendices, this book is sure to inform and enchant a new generation of readers."--Jacket.

The Gods of the Egyptians Or Studies in Egyptian Mythology, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by E. A. Wallis Budge Pdf

Written by one of the most well-known Egyptologist in the world, E. A. Wallis Budge, The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology is a seminal piece of work on the rich Egyptian mythology. This title is the second volume of a two part series, which covers the entire gamut of research and information on Egyptian mythology and culture. Included in this volume are detailed explanations of the various gods that were worshipped and continue to be revered to this date. Spanning over five hundred pages, the author has divided The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology into multiple chapters, each dedicated to a particular god. Towards the end, there is a section on miscellaneous gods and important birds and animals that have found mention across scriptures and archaeological findings. The presence of a detailed index helps in quick reference. Deviating from a typical textbook structure, this work has lots of illustrations and coloured plates for the reader to contextualize and easily identify common themes and peculiarities found in the many gods of Egypt. Some of the gods covered in this series include Amen, Hapi, Osiris, Isis and Set to name but a few. Perhaps the most well written section is on Osiris and Isis as Budge deconstructs common myths linked to both and provides observations backed by facts. The story of Osiris as a judge of the dead as well as a description of his funeral make for an enlightening read while Budge takes great pains to provide additional tools like religious symbols and writings to create an accurate account of Egyptian mythology. The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology is of course a necessary reference book for students and scholars of Egyptian history but it would provide the perfect starting point for the casual enthusiast as well. Legends of the Gods by E. A. Wallis Budge Pdf

Legends of the Egyptian Gods, written in 1912, is a book meant to help Egyptology students examine Egyptian literature and its history. However, since the backgrounds and names of Egyptian authors were not recorded, Budge instead presents the texts in the most complete forms possible, with the original hieroglyphs and their translations. Legends of the Egyptian Gods includes a preface and an introduction by Budge, as well as summaries of each myth at the beginning of the book. The summaries, presented in one large block, are followed by the text and translations of nine Egyptian myths and legends. The book contains illustrations and plates complementing the stories. This book is a wonderful addition to the collection of any student of Egyptology. SIR ERNEST ALFRED THOMPSON WALLIS BUDGE (1857-1934) was born in Bodmin, Cornwall in the UK and discovered an interest in languages at a very early age. Budge spent all his free time learning and discovering Semitic languages, including Assyrian, Syriac, and Hebrew. Eventually, through a close contact, he was able to acquire a job working with Egyptian and Iraqi artifacts at the British Museum. Budge excavated and deciphered numerous cuneiform and hieroglyphic documents, contributing vastly to the museum's collection. Eventually, he became the Keeper of his department, specializing in Egyptology. Budge wrote many books during his lifetime, most specializing in Egyptian life, religion, and language.

Temple of the Cosmos by Jeremy Naydler Pdf

In this guide to the cosmology of ancient Egypt, Jeremy Naydler recreates the experience of living in another time and place. Temple of the Cosmos explores Egypt's sacred geography and mythology; but more importantly, it reveals with unprecedented clarity an ancient consciousness in tune with the rhythms of the earth. The ancient Egyptians experienced their gods not as remote beings but rather as psychic and natural forces, transpersonal energies that played a part in everyday life. This direct experience of the gods shaped the Egyptian concepts of human development, healing, magic, and the soul's journey through the Underworld as described in the Books of the Dead. While building on the pioneering efforts of R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz and others, Temple of the Cosmos is much more than a recapitulation of previous theories of Egyptian spirituality. Rather, this book breaks new ground by placing the work of other Egyptologists in an original, magical context. The result is a brilliant reimagining of the Egyptian worldview and its sacred path of spiritual unfolding.
