The fathers are important because they are quoted as authorities in theology. Obviously, then, they are all people who wrote works that we can quote. St Antony the Hermit, St Law rence, St Sebastian are not fathers because they have left no writings. Secondly, he must be a C atho lic, who lived in the communion of the Church, whose writings are correct and orthodox. Otherwise the writer's authority is of no value as a witness of the Catholic faith. Apollinaris of Laodicea (t c. 390) and Tertullian (t 240) were learned and prolific authors; but they are not fathers because they were heretics. Thirdly, a father is a person of eminent sanctity as well as learning. The title is an honourable one given only to saints. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Among the more distinguished Christian martyrs, the accounts of whom have happily been preserved for us, one of the earliest and most illustrious was Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch. Te have only to turn to the Acts of the Apostles to see how important a place in the early history of Christianity the great city of Antioch was. Large numbers of Christians were found there in the very first days of the Gospel.* It was here that the name of Christians T was first given to the disciples of Jesus, and the great Apostle Paul made this, the capital of Syria, his head-quarters for several years; while from thence he, with his fellow-labourers, spread the word of God through Asia Minor and Greece. The labours of St. Paul were specially addressed to the Gentiles at Antioch, but St. Peter, whose work lay principally among the J ews, also visited Antioch, and made a large number of con verts there. Ignatius, of whom we come now to speak, was well known to both these Apostles.
