Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: October, 1908 For we have now reached such a condition of affairs that the majority of the young men who offer themselves for military service in some of our large cities, are rejected as being unfit. A very large percentage of the children in our schools are either physically or mentally malformed, or in some way enfeebled and deficient; while impaired eyesight, flat-feet, weak hearts, spinal curvature and soft teeth are becoming so general as to be regarded almost as normal amongst the youth of our country. Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: April, 1908 It is noteworthy that the Chairman and all the Speakers at this meeting were Members of our Order, and that they include a Brahmin, a Theosophist, a Parsee, and a Buddhist - thus illustrating the fact that men of all forms of religion become as one, when they reach the fundamental principles and ideals of their various Faiths. Our Canadian, American and Australasian comrades are pressing on with most praiseworthy zeal, and many of our British workers are distinguishing themselves in like manner. One of our Councillors is visiting the leaders of the Vegetarian Movement in France with a view to inducing them to translate and circulate our publications. The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12 by Sidney H. Beard Pdf

Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: July, 1908 Now, it is to vital and actively disposed Christians of this type that the food-reform and health-culture Movement presents an opportunity, and a sphere of useful service which is in strict accord with the work of the early followers of the Master. On every hand around us we can find human beings who are suffering from some malady which results from dietetic transgression or unhygienic habit; and, in most cases, cure will promptly follow their return to a healthful mode of living. We can reveal to them the mistakes they are making, encourage them to amend their ways, tell them how to live in accord with Nature's Laws, and exemplify to them by our own healthy condition, the advantages of the hygienic and law-abiding life. In most instances we shall find ourselves well able to render such service, provided of course, that we have first found the Way of Health ourselves, and have given a reasonable amount of time to reading instructive books on the subject. And in exceptional cases, where complications may cause us to doubt how best to pro ceed, we can easily direct sufferers to some fully qualified and experienced physician who has studied the subject of 'disease, ' and also of 'diet in relation to Health, ' more fully than we have had opportunity to do; or we can tell them of books that will help them to apprehend the truths they need to learn. Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: The Official Journal of the Order of the Golden Age; July, 1909 To what extent farmers themselves are responsible for the production of diseased meat is shown by the fact that authorities find it profitable to erect expensive buildings and machinery at abattoirs (where the home cattle slaughtered are well under per week) to deal with the condemned meat. The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12 by Sidney H. Beard Pdf

Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: October, 1909 Much can be learnt from a body of fruitarians who have styled themselves The Order of the Golden Age, and who openly avow their detestation of all the products of the slaughter house. Without a doubt these people are extreme in their views, but those who do not wish to adopt them in their entirety can learn many a useful lesson from the literature to be obtained at their Offices in the Brompton-road. If for no other purpose than that of variation, a knowledge of vegetarian and fruitarian cookery is most desirable in this country. The neglect of vegetables in the average English household is of long standing, and it is quite time that a few valuable hints should be adopted. These can be found in a handy little book by Mr. Sidney H. Beard, which is, as its title explains, a guide-book to natural, hygienic, and humane diet. One cannot scan its pages without admitting the utility of the work, if only for the recipes contained therein, although the reasons urged for this class of diet will not meet with universal acceptance. An enthusiast is Mr. Beard, who for the love of the Cause, and apart from all motives of gain has devoted many years of his life to the advancement of the Fruitarian Movement. In this guide-book there are many simple and palatable recipes for breakfast dishes, and a special bloodless menu for Christmas. From these the discriminating reader can select pleasing variants, which are undoubtedly acceptable in warm weather. Even the most devoted adherent of our ordinary method of living will be disposed to admit that the introduction of a much larger share of fruit and vegetables in our national dietary would be beneficial. We do not appreciate sufficiently the value of apples, oranges, grapes, nuts, and such like food, which are frequently looked upon as a fitting conclusion to a meat meal. All of these could be used more freely than is the custom at present, and with decided benefit to health. The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12 by Sidney H. Beard Pdf

Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 12: April, 1909 We treated infectious diseases 446, viz - Typhoid 281, Influenza 44, Dysentery 38, Measles 34, Tuberculosis 28, Scarlatina 14, Diphtheria 7 Diseases through Uric Acid Poisoning 125, viz: Chronic Rheumatism 65, Rheumatic Fever 27, Lumbago 9, Neuralgia 6, Sciatica 8 Diseases of the Respiratory System 76, viz: Bronchitis 34, Pneu monia 33, Pleurisy 9; Diseases of the Digestive Organs 72, with 15 cases of Appendicitis; Fractures 34, Cancer 28, Burns 19, Eye Diseases 18. In order to clearly mark the difference of our results in the two periods, I shall now enumerate the losses through death during the whole time and during the two periods in total numbers and in percentages. Out of 1435 patients during the whole time we lost 159, or 11 per cent. Out of 793 patients admitted during the first period, we lost 102, or 13 per cent. Out of 642 patients admitted during the second period we lost 57, or 88 per cent. If we deduct from this total the incurable cases of Tuberculosis - viz., 28 and Cancer 16, which were the cause of 22 deaths in each period, or 44 during the whole time, we get the following results - Out of 1391 patients during the whole time we lost 115, or 82 per cent; out of 771 patients during the first period we lost 80, or per cent; out of 620 patients during the second period we lost 35, or 56 per cent. This grand result - viz., the reduction of the mortality rate from 13 per cent to 88 per cent in all cases, and the reduction, after exclusion of the incurables, from 104 per cent to 56 per cent, or to nearly one-half, is principally caused through the extraordinary reduction of the fatalities in typhoid, as the following figures prove. Out of 281 cases of typhoid during the whole time we lost 28, or 10 per cent; out of 171 cases of typhoid during the first period we lost 26, or 15 per cent out of 110 cases of typhoid during the second period we lost 2, or 18 per cent. But I have said that not only typhoid patients, but all the other patients, have shared in the benefits of the new treatment. In order to prove this, I now give the mortality rate of all cases, excepting the typhoids as follows: Out of 1154 cases, excluding typhoids, during the whole time we lost 134, or 117 per cent; out of 622 cases, excluding typhoid, during the first period we lost 79, or 13 per cent; out of 532 cases, excluding typhoid, during the second period we lost 55, or 103 per cent. Teenager on First, Geezer at Bat, 4-F on Deck by James D. Szalontai Pdf

The Second World War was in the bottom of the ninth inning in Germany and Japan, but back at home the bases were loaded with baseball players, many of them new to the big leagues. While the game's stars traded their stockings and gloves for khaki and rifles, America's leaders believed baseball would boost morale at home. Teams filled out their rosters with retired stars such as Jimmie Foxx and Babe Herman; with players like Pete Gray and Dick Sipek, whose disabilities had kept them out of the majors; and with teenagers like 17-year-olds Putsy Caballero and Tommy Brown. But while the level of major league talent had reached its nadir, war-weary fans packed the ballparks, eagerly following pennant races as intense as any that preceded the war.

Essays in the History of Canadian Law, Volume XII by Lori Chambers,Joan Sangster Pdf

Drawing on engaging case studies, Essays in the History of Canadian Law brings the law to life. The contributors to this collection provide rich historical and social context for each case, unravelling the process of legal decision-making and explaining the impact of the law on the people involved in legal disputes. Examining the law not simply as legislation and institutions, but as discourse, practice, symbols, rhetoric, and language, the book’s chapters show the law as both oppressive and constraining and as a point of contention and means of resistance. This collection presents new approaches and concerns, as well as re-examinations of existing themes with new evidence and modes of storytelling. Contributors cover many legal thematic areas, from criminal to labour, civil, administrative, and human rights law, spanning English and French Canada, and ranging from the mid-eighteenth century to the late twentieth century. The legal cases vary from precedent-setting cases to lesser-known ones, from those driven by one woman’s quest for personal justice to others in which state actors dominate. Bringing to light how the people embroiled in these cases interacted with the legal system, the book reveals the ramifications of a legal system characterized by multiple layers of inequality.

Close Shave by James D. Szalontai Pdf

Sal Maglie was a feared and hated pitcher perhaps best known for his vicious knockdown pitches that made batters tremble. Yet he was also respected as a ferocious competitor, one who pitched with his arm and his head, one who could be depended upon when his team needed a victory, and one who refused to quit, even when faced with a blacklisting, crippling injuries, and advanced age. Off the field, he was an amiable man. This work chronicles the life and career of the man and the player: his unspectacular minor league career, his 1945 debut with Mel Ott's New York Giants, his blacklisting by organized baseball for playing in Jorge Pasquel's Mexican League, and his rejoining the Giants in 1950 at the age of 33. He thereupon established himself as a bona fide big league pitcher, and went on to have a stellar career in the majors that included stints with the Cleveland Indians, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals. Game-by-game analyses of Maglie's professional career, intimate portraits of the men Maglie played with and against--Mel Ott, Eddie Stanky, Monte Irvin, Jackie Robinson, Carl Furillo, Willie Mays, among others--and a look at baseball as it was played in the 1940s and 1950s are features of the book.

The Victorian Premiers, 1856-2006 by Paul Strangio,Brian J. Costar Pdf

In the century and a half since Victoria was granted responsible government in 1856, 44 premiers have presided over the state and colony, from 'Honest' William Haines to Steve Bracks. Here is their story. For the first time this book brings together a comprehensive collection of biographical and political portraits of the Victorian premiers written by leading Australian historians and political scientists. The result is a compelling journey through a turbulent, occasionally anarchic, political landscape. A cast of fascinating characters is brought to life--the mercurial Graham Berry, who in the 1870s threatened broken heads and flaming houses in his heroic struggle to tame the colony's intractably conservative upper house; the roguish Tommy Bent, the turn of the century 'can do' premier whose development enthusiasms were unhindered by probities of office; the bohemian Tom Hollway, who conducted Victoria's affairs from his suite in the Windsor Hotel; the 'accidental' leader Henry Bolte, who became Victoria's longest serving premier; and the larrikin metropolitan, Jeff Kennett, who turned the state into a neo-liberal laboratory in the 1990s. A tale of premiers, the book is also a narrative of politics in a state that has vied with New South Wales as Australia's most prosperous and powerful. It recounts many extraordinary episodes: the precocious development of democracy in a fledgling colony turned upside down by gold immigrants; the titanic bicameral struggles of the 1860s and 1870s that brought Victoria to the brink of insurrection; the bank crashes of the 1890s; the police strike of 1923; the great Labor split of the 1950s; the hanging of Ronald Ryan in 1967; the social democratic adventurism of the Labor decade of the 1980s brought to a shuddering halt by another era of financial collapses; and the neo-liberal experimentalism of the Kennett government. This carefully researched and engagingly written book will leave the reader in no doubt that politics in the 'Garden State' has seldom been sedate and its premiers rarely predictable.
