The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 7: February, 1902 (Classic Reprint) by Sidney H. Beard Pdf

Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 7: February, 1902 We need not condemn ourselves too harshly because we have failed, as yet, to attain our individual ideals. We know only too well how we have yearned and striven after high achievement, and how in the silence we have mourned defeat. And God knows it too! And being conscious that we want to be other than we are, we feel, intuitively, that in the eyes of the Omniscient Father there is no look of condemnation; the inner voice speaks to us of changeless Faith, Hope, and Love - ln us, and for us, and toward us. And this sustains our courage and saves us from giving up in despair. Nor may we condemn others. For we know not the weight of the physical burden which they have inherited, nor the force of adverse circumstance against which they have to fight. Freely we have received; and freely must we give to them, the very same Faith and Hope and Love which have been our own salvation hitherto. In such ministry as this there is a magic power that the world does not yet apprehend, but which men will some day understand. 'it will transform the weak and make them strong, it will refresh as with gentle rain the barren heart and cause it to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit and the flowers of paradise. No electric battery has such potency as an union of spiritual men and women who are banded together to uplift and encourage some weak brother or sister, by their faith, sympathy, and hopeful confidence. The vibrations created by such a battery of human hearts will awaken responsive faith and renewed effort, and make possible that resolute and hopeful mental attitude which precedes victory and upon which victory depends. By divine optimism such as this, are great ideals conceived, and by the same magic alchemy they can be trans muted into actual realities and accomplished facts. The psychic laws of mental suggestion can thus be utilized for the transformation of mankind - telepathy affording the medium of communication, and faith supplying the requisite motive power. Let us by all means have an union of all who love, on behalf of all who suffer. But let us also have an union of all who believe in the great possibilities that lie involved in human nature and in the glorious future that awaits us and the world in which we live. The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 7: March, 1902 (Classic Reprint) by Sidney H. Beard Pdf

Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 7: March, 1902 Be ye merciful as your Father which is in heaven is merciful? Can we fancy the Divine, or even a saint, persisting in pleasing his palate at the cost of suffering, of such awful torture, to others, such awful demoralisation to human beings, as is implied by the existence of slaughter houses, especially in America and England. Is there no sin in injuring the temples of the Holy Ghost as St. Paul calls our outside coverings?. We are responsible to our Maker for our body as well as for our soul. Have we any right to mar His property, to make our own husks diseased and unclean, so that the ego cannot rise and do its daily work there as He would have it done? Overwhelming evidence shows that through eating dead bodies we do this. Is there no sin for immortal spirits, raised through the incarnation to a more than angelic union with the Divine, if we will have it so, to build up such a coarse opaque covering round the ego that it is quite impossible to see the things of the spirit through it? Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 7: October, 1902 It is well, therefore, that the utmost care should be exercised in selecting foods which will benefit, and in ex cluding foods which will injure, the vitality of the human race. I am not one of those who think that science has no lessons to learn in the school of dietetics, but rather that in this field more than in any other she needs to leave the happy-go-lucky methods of the past and to experiment definitely and systematically in the future. The Fruit Cure by Jacqueline Alnes Pdf

How one woman’s search to regain her health led her to the troubling outer fringes of the Queensland wellness industry. A university athlete, Jacqueline Alnes’s season was cut short by a series of inexplicable neurological symptoms. What started with a cough escalated to a collapse on the track and months of episodes that stole her ability to walk and even speak. Two years after quitting the team to heal, Alnes’s symptoms returned with a severity that led to months in a wheelchair but left doctors mystified. Desperate for answers, she turned to an online community centred around two wellness gurus – Queensland’s ‘Durianrider’ and his then-girlfriend ‘Freelee the Banana Girl’ – who claimed that a strict, all-fruit diet could cure conditions like depression, addiction, anxiety and vision problems. Alnes wasn’t alone. From all over the world, people in pain, doubted or dismissed by medical authorities, or seeking a miracle diet, turned to fruit in hope of a cure. In The Fruit Cure, Jacqueline Alnes takes readers on a spellbinding and unforgettable journey through the fringe world of fruitarianism. A powerful personal narrative, it is also a damning inquiry into the sinister strains of wellness culture that prey on people’s vulnerabilities through schemes, scams and diets masquerading as hope.

Close Shave by James D. Szalontai Pdf

Sal Maglie was a feared and hated pitcher perhaps best known for his vicious knockdown pitches that made batters tremble. Yet he was also respected as a ferocious competitor, one who pitched with his arm and his head, one who could be depended upon when his team needed a victory, and one who refused to quit, even when faced with a blacklisting, crippling injuries, and advanced age. Off the field, he was an amiable man. This work chronicles the life and career of the man and the player: his unspectacular minor league career, his 1945 debut with Mel Ott's New York Giants, his blacklisting by organized baseball for playing in Jorge Pasquel's Mexican League, and his rejoining the Giants in 1950 at the age of 33. He thereupon established himself as a bona fide big league pitcher, and went on to have a stellar career in the majors that included stints with the Cleveland Indians, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals. Game-by-game analyses of Maglie's professional career, intimate portraits of the men Maglie played with and against--Mel Ott, Eddie Stanky, Monte Irvin, Jackie Robinson, Carl Furillo, Willie Mays, among others--and a look at baseball as it was played in the 1940s and 1950s are features of the book.

Teenager on First, Geezer at Bat, 4-F on Deck by James D. Szalontai Pdf

The Second World War was in the bottom of the ninth inning in Germany and Japan, but back at home the bases were loaded with baseball players, many of them new to the big leagues. While the game's stars traded their stockings and gloves for khaki and rifles, America's leaders believed baseball would boost morale at home. Teams filled out their rosters with retired stars such as Jimmie Foxx and Babe Herman; with players like Pete Gray and Dick Sipek, whose disabilities had kept them out of the majors; and with teenagers like 17-year-olds Putsy Caballero and Tommy Brown. But while the level of major league talent had reached its nadir, war-weary fans packed the ballparks, eagerly following pennant races as intense as any that preceded the war.

Jack Benny and the Golden Age of American Radio Comedy by Kathryn H. Fuller-Seeley Pdf

The king of radio comedy from the Great Depression through the early 1950s, Jack Benny was one of the most influential entertainers in twentieth-century America. A master of comic timing and an innovative producer, Benny, with his radio writers, developed a weekly situation comedy to meet radio’s endless need for new material, at the same time integrating advertising into the show’s humor. Through the character of the vain, cheap everyman, Benny created a fall guy, whose frustrated struggles with his employees addressed midcentury America’s concerns with race, gender, commercialism, and sexual identity. Kathryn H. Fuller-Seeley contextualizes her analysis of Jack Benny and his entourage with thoughtful insight into the intersections of competing entertainment industries and provides plenty of evidence that transmedia stardom, branded entertainment, and virality are not new phenomena but current iterations of key aspects in American commercial cultural history.

Henry Clay Frick and the Golden Age of Coal and Coke, 1870-1920 by Cassandra Vivian Pdf

Once the beehive coke oven was perfected in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the coal and coke industry began to flourish and supply other fledgling industries with the fuel they needed to succeed. The thrust of this growth came from Henry Clay Frick, who opened his first coal mines in the Morgan Valley of Fayette County in 1871. There, he helped lead the industry, making it the major developmental force in industrial America. This book traces the birth and growth of the early coal and coke industry from 1870 to 1920, primarily in Fayette and Westmoreland Counties. Beyond Frick's importance to the industry, other major topics covered in this history include the lives and struggles of the miners and immigrants who worked in the industry, the growth of unions and the many strikes in the region, and the attempts to clean the surrounding waterways from the horrific pollution that resulted from industrial development. Perhaps the most significant fact is that this book uses primary sources contemporary with the golden age of the coal and coke industry. That effort offers an alternative view and helps repair the common portrayal of Frick as corrupt by showing his work as that of an industrial genius.

Reubin O'D. Askew and the Golden Age of Florida Politics by Martin A. Dyckman Pdf

Inside the reinvention of Florida politics Florida Book Awards, Bronze Medal for Florida Nonfiction Reubin Askew was swept into the governor’s office in 1970 as part of a remarkable wave of progressive politics and legislative reform in Florida. A man of uncompromising principle and independence, he was elected primarily on a platform of tax reform. In the years that followed, Askew led a group of politicians from both parties who sought—and achieved—judicial reform, redistricting, busing and desegregation, the end of the Cross Florida Barge Canal, the Sunshine Amendment, and much more. This period was truly a golden age of Florida politics, and Martin Dyckman’s narrative is well written, fast paced, and reads like a novel. Dyckman also reveals how the return of special interests, the rise of partisan politics, unlimited campaign spending, term limits, gerrymandering, and more have eroded the achievements of the Golden Age in subsequent decades.
