The High School Course in English (Classic Reprint) by Willard G. Bleyer Pdf

Excerpt from The High School Course in English While the plan of the work has been made as flexible as possible in order to adapt it to different schools, it has seemed desirable to indicate definitely how all of the details of the course should be organized and what methods should be used to bring about the required results. The object has been to consider the purpose of each part of the English work, and to show as specifically as possible what must be done and to some extent how it must be done to accomplish this purpose. By having a' definite aim for each year's work and by seeing clearly what is to be accomplished in each part of the subject, the teacher of English feels responsible for the successful completion of a specific part of the course. At the same time the originality and ability of the teacher need not be ham pered by a definite plan but may be exercised in adapting the work to different conditions in different schools and classes. In discussing the course in English, the general aim and methods in teaching the important elements, composition and reading, are taken up first, and then the particular phases of each subject to be presented in each year, are considered. What is presented under the general topics, reading and com position, therefore, applies to the work of each year unless otherwise stated, and usually is not repeated in considering {each year of the course. The Teaching of High School English by Department Of Public Instruction Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching of High School English: June, 1914 Makers of high school courses of study and high school teachers have not been unmindful of these considerations. More of the pupils' time during the high school period is devoted to English than to any other subject, and this independent of the fact that every recitation is, in a sense, a recitation in English. In the large academic high schools there are more teachers of English than of any other subject. How far the results of the teaching justify the time and energy expended is not easily determined. It is not to be denied that results are not always what either the public or the teachers themselves could wish. In this connection there should be taken into account the forces at work outside of school which impair the results of English teaching, and which seriously handicap the work of teachers in this subject as the work of no other body of high school teachers is handicapped. Some of these forces are the prevailing low standards of spoken English in many homes and in many communities, the dislike of a large number of pupils for written composition of any sort, their inability to see the relation of good English to the practical affairs of the world, and the enormous amount of cheap periodical matter which the news stands offer in tempting colors or pictorial adornment to old and young alike. High School English Book One (Classic Reprint) by A. R. Brubacher Pdf

Excerpt from High School English Book One The chapter on Conversations about Books seeks to ih dicate a method for classroom discussions about the books prescribed for the work in literature. The authors believe that reading for pleasure is the chief aim of the literature work, and that the books should therefore be discussed from this point of view. They believe that the class dis eussions should be familiar conversations confined to topics of interest to young people. They would therefore leave the minute analysis of books for style and structure to the fourth high school year or to the college class. Such mi unties, if admitted at all, should be purely incidental. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Elements of High School English (Classic Reprint) by Maude M. Frank Pdf

Excerpt from Elements of High School English The teacher of English in the high schools of to-day has varied and manifold duties. To the lessons in literature and written composition, which were the staple diet a decade ago, there must now be added persistent instruction in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral composition, all duly planned and graded for the secondary school. Furthermore, every well-ordered course in English must include some provision for dramatic effort in the classroom if the work in oral expression is to be given its full value. The present volume contains material for study and practice in all these divisions of the subject, arranged with a view to affording the pupil as much growth-giving exercise as possible, and to economizing the time and energy of the teacher. The subject matter for composition, both oral and written, has been carefully chosen with the design of securing interest, for much experience has convinced the writer that the value of such work is in exact proportion to the zest with which it is carried on. History of the Class of 1870 by W. Eustis Barker Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Class of 1870: English High School Building rests in my eye now; the tall building, rearing its granite front between those even more ambitious, which shut out the much-needed light and air; and then inside, - well, all of us in '70 know the inside from roof to foundation. Did not the R. Society meet in the cellar Well, they can describe its exits and entrances; and the circular stairway, with its well in the centre, where we used to drop in fact, anything, on the heads below; the scarred, notched, and battered railing; the wide, airy hall at the top, and the dark, dirty rooms below; the master's desk on the right, the sink in the left hand corner, and the hard-used blackboard on two sides are they not all familiar to us? But not to you, oh high school boy of the future. Light and elegance, and air and beauty; these will be your portion, and only see that you appreciate it, and do not let them pamper your education from you, but if you must know that to your fathers education was a stern duty, and in comfortless rooms, bare of ornament save such little marks as er ratic sponges or other missiles might have left on the walls, they garnered the wisdom which has made them plan out and realize, as they will, the splendid edifice which caught my eye and caused the opening of this sketch. And now to you, dear classmates, the writer turns, to revel with you in the scenes closely allied to the old school-house; to take you back to the dear old times, and leave to posterity a record, as far as it is pos sible to compile one, of the doings of the Class of 1870, written not consecutively, not chronologically, but as they come into the writer's mind, but always written without envy and without malice. Making a High School Program (Classic Reprint) by Myron W. Richardson Pdf

Excerpt from Making a High School Program Hile every high school program is so dependent upon local conditions of one kind or another as to be very much of an individual problem, yet there are certain fundamental considerations that underlie all program making. This book is an attempt to set forth these fundamental considerations. It uses for illustrative purposes the steps followed in making the program of the Girls' High School of Boston, a school of 2100 pupils, but the type of program and the method of procedure outlined here have been applied successfully to high schools ranging in size from 200 to 2000; to high schools with fixed courses of study, and to those with a large amount of freedom in election; to high schools with programs made up largely of academic work, and to those with much shop or industrial work.
