The Higher Hinduism in Relation to Christianity by Thomas Ebenezer Slater Pdf

Excerpt from The Higher Hinduism in Relation to Christianity: Certain Aspects of Hindu Thought, From the Christian Standpoint I take great pleasure in writing a few words of introduction to this important essay by my friend Rev. T. E. Slater, of the London Mission, Bangalore. The present work was submitted in 1899 to the Saxon Missionary Conference at Leipzig in response to an invitation for a 'Missionary Prize Essay' on 'a presentation of the fundamental views of the Hindus, religious and philosophical, according to the Vedas, Upanishads, and of the Brahminic (especially the Vedanta) philosophy, and an estimate of the same from a Christian point of view.' The Essay (which thus determined the form and context of the present work) was to have in view the fact that, in the intellectual struggle which has been evoked by Christian missions in India, the educated Hindus are, indeed, ready to throw over the popular religion, but cling so much the more tenaciously to their more ancient faith as contained in their best religious literature. It was designed to instruct educated friends of missions at home in the true genius of the Hindu religion and its fundamental distinction from Christianity, as well as to aid the missionary abroad in his conflict with Hinduism. In response to this invitation, eight essays were sent in, five of which were written in German and three in English. Faith Meets Faith by Eric John Sharpe Pdf

"How are Christians, with their claims of a definitive gospel, salvation once for all achieved by Jesus, to regard the beliefs of other religions? Many different answers have been given, particularly during this century, when greater mobility and social change have made the questions of local and practical, as well as theoretical and international interest. The problems and the issues involved are well illustrated in Christian attitudes to Hinduism, and it is these that Professor Sharpe discusses in his book. After looking at the older 'orthodox' views of the relationships between religions, he considers the argument, popular at the beginning of this century, that Christ fulfils all religions, the criticism of this thesis and the view that other religions, whatever their merits, are morally deficient. Then after studying Hindu views of Christianity, he follows development through the period between the wars and post-war developments in Protestantism and in relation to Vatican II to the positive attitudes which are to be found today among adherents of both religions." - Publisher

Hinduism and Its Relations to Christianity by John Robson Pdf

Excerpt from Hinduism and Its Relations to Christianity This book is offered to those who take an interest in India, and especially in Indian missions, as an attempt to enable them better to understand the religion of the great majority of the people of that land. I have found prevalent in this country ideas of Hinduism very different from those which a twelve years' practical study of it in constant contact with its followers has led me to form. Generally, among friends of missions, there is an undue depreciation of Hinduism, - an ignoring of an ignorance of the amount of truth and vitality still to be found in it; whilst, among those indifferent or hostile to missions, there is an equal ignoring of ignorance of the falsehood which vitiates that truth and poisons that vitality. Not only does Hinduism contain a subtle philosophy, express high moral truths and enjoin many social virtues; it even in one guise or other embodies many of the leading religious truths which Christianity teaches. Disciple Making among Hindus by Timothy Shultz Pdf

Drawing on thirty years’ experience among Hindus, Timothy Shultz writes this book as a testimony of the kingdom of God growing in a non-Christian environment. Disciple Making among Hindus: Making Authentic Relationships Grow describes how Hindu people experience and respond to Jesus Christ. What are the core values and rhythms of their cultural world? What are the patterns of community and discipleship that help them draw closer to Jesus? Through moving personal stories, biblical reflection, and practical wisdom, Shultz introduces us to the centrality of family, the covenantal relationships that make up Hindu social life, and the yearning for authentic spiritual experience. While this book will benefit anyone wanting to make disciples among Hindus, it is far more than a strategy of contextualization or a blueprint for successful evangelism. Read it to discover the beauty of Hindus as Jesus sees them—and the beauty of Jesus through Hindu eyes.

India's Problem, Krishna or Christ by John P. Jones Pdf

John P. Jones' "India's Problem, Krishna or Christ" is an interesting look at the multiculturalism of India during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At a time when English colonialism aimed to impart Christianity on the people of India, Hinduism faced the threat of disappearing. When many Indians might have felt torn between which faith to follow, Jones describes such a conflict that is important to read for a better understanding of this tense time in history.
