A Short History of the Scottish Highlands and Isles (Classic Reprint) by William Cook Mackenzie Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of the Scottish Highlands and Isles A short history should have a brief Preface, and a few words will suffice to explain the purpose and scope of the present work. No complete history of the Highlands, issued at a popular price and in a compact form, has yet been published. It is believed that a book of that description will serve a purpose which the existing histories do not claim to fulfil, and will appeal to a considerable body of readers whom the larger and more expensive works on the subject fail to reach. In that belief, and with that object, the present volume has been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An Historical Account of the Settlements of Scotch Highlanders in America Prior to the Peace of 1783 by John Patterson Maclean Pdf

Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Settlements of Scotch Highlanders in America Prior to the Peace of 1783: Together With Notices of Highland Regiments and Biographical Sketches It is a noticeable fact that notwithstanding the valuable ser vices rendered by the Highland regiments in the French and In dian war, but little account has been taken by writers, except in Scotland, although General David Stewart of Garth. As early as 1822, clearly paved the way. Unfortunately, his works, as well as those who have followed him, are comparatively unknown on this side the Atlantic. I was led to the searching out of this phase of our history, not only by the occasional allusions, but specially from reading works devoted to other nationalities engaged in the Revolution. Their achievements were fully set forth and their praises sung. Why should not the Oppressed Gael, who sought the forests of the New World, struggled in the wilderness, and battled against foes, also be placed in his true light? If properly known, the artist would have a subject for his pencil, the poet a picture for his praises, and the novelist a strong background for his romance. Legends of the Black Watch, Or Forty-Second Highlanders (Classic Reprint) by James Grant Pdf

Excerpt from Legends of the Black Watch, or Forty-Second Highlanders Woven up with an occasional legend or superstition gleaned among the mountains from whence its soldiers came, the warlike details and many of the names which occur in the following pages, belong to the military history of the country and of the brave Regiment whose title is given to our Book. It is generally acknowledged that but for the reten tion of the hilt in the British service, and for the high character of those regiments who wear it, the military our/me of Scotland had been long since for gotten in Europe, and her national existence had been as completely ignored during the Wars of Wellington as in those of Marlborough; nor in times more recent had the electric wire announced that, when the cloud of Russian horse came on at Balaclava and our allies ed, the Scots stood firm. The Heart of Scotland (Classic Reprint) by Ascott Robert Hope Moncrieff Pdf

Excerpt from The Heart of Scotland Bonnie scotland pleased so many readers that it came to be supplemented by another volume dwelling mainly on the western Highlands and Islands, which was illustrated in a different style to match their Wilder and mistier features. Such an addition gave the author's likeness of Scotland a somewhat lop-sided effect and to balance this list he has prepared a third volume dealing with the trimmer and richer, yet not less picturesque region oftenest visited by strangers - that is, Perthshire and its borders. This is shown to be the Heart of Scotland, not only as containing its most famous scenery, but as best blending Highland and Lowland charms, and as having made a focus of the national life and history. Pict and Scot, Celt and Sassenach, king and vassal, mailed baron and plaided chief, cateran and farmer, Jacobite and Hanoverian, gauger and smuggler, Kirk and Secession, here in turn carried on a series of struggles whose incidents should be well known through the Waverley No'vels. But these famous romances seem too little known to hasty readers of to - day; and some glimpses of Perthshire's past life may not prove over familiar, at least to strangers in a county where the author is at home. In 1715 the effective force of the Macleods was men, and in 1745, 900. The chief, by the advice of Presi dent Forbes, did not join in the rebellion of the latter year, and so saved his estates, but many of his clansmen, burning with zeal for the cause of Prince Charles, fought in the ranks of the rebel army. A History of the Highlands, and the Highland Clans, Vol. 2: With an Extensive Selection from the Hitherto Inedited Stuart Papers (Classic Reprint) by James Browne Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the Highlands, and the Highland Clans, Vol. 2: With an Extensive Selection From the Hitherto Inedited Stuart Papers As soon as the news of the flight of the king reached London, the greatest agitation prevailed; and the two great parties - the Presbyterians and Independents - each of which was struggling for ascendency, became even still more distrustful of one another; but when they ascertained the place of his retreat, they joined in reprobating the conduct of the Scots, who, they erroneously supposed, had induced the king to put himself in their power. The possession of the royal person had been long desired by both factions as of paramount importance in paving the way for the accomplishment of their respective objects; but the unexpected step which the king had just taken seemed to render their prospects for ever hopeless. But they soon found that the case was not so bad as they had imagined for the king was not only prevailed upon to order his officers to surrender the fortresses which they still retained, but to become a suppliant for peace by requesting both houses of parliament to offer him propositions for consideration. Some of these propositions were, however, such as the king could not, in conscience, submit to, and others were quite incompatible with monarchical government. The refusal of the king to agree to these conditions, one of which stipulated the establishment of the Directory, and the recognition of the Westminster Confession, while it displeased the presbyterian party, inspired the independents with fresh hopes, and the latter now began to indicate pretty plainly their intention of dethroning the king.
