The Emancipation of English Women (Classic Reprint) by W. Lyon Blease Pdf

Excerpt from The Emancipation of English Women NO argument is so common on the lips of the Opponents of Woman Suffrage as that women cannot be emancipated, for they have never been slaves. Those who make this statement can have little knowledge of the facts of history. I shall show in' these pages that, so far from having en joyed freedom, women have for more than two hundred years been struggling against the egoism Of the male sex; that the inferiority which want Of physical strength has imposed Upon them has been aggravated by religion, by law, and by custom; that they have had to contend, always against the indifference, Often against the active prejudice, con tempt, and jealousy of men to Obtain education. The Slave in History by William Stevens Pdf

Excerpt from The Slave in History: His Sorrows and His Emancipation What the Serpent was to Laocoon, slavery with its entwining folds and its Slow torture has been to the world. The nineteenth century saw many changes, but none Of greater social effect than the movement which broke the power Of slavery. A usage of primitive times, it had grown with the rise and fall of empires, and ruled as the sum of all tyrannies, the embodiment of all cruelties, - pleading as its justification from age to age, even after the emancipation Of Europe, necessity, convenience, tradition, - till at last the spirit of free men rose against it. The struggle which followed was prolonged; it had its prophets and its martyrs; the inward light of conscience led the way with new illuminating power; and human sympathies that had been well-nigh strangled awoke, put on their strength, and did not slumber till they had won for the slave a place in the brotherhood of men. The final adjustment is yet to come. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In this quarter some estates did a little last week, and have been making more pro. Gress since, but the far greater number have not yet done any work; the minds of the people are very unsettled, and full of all sorts of foolish no tions, which will continue more or less till we hear of the home government having accepted and approved of our abolition bill, and their views with regard to us. Slave Emancipation in Cuba by Rebecca Jarvis Scott Pdf

Slave Emancipation in Cuba is the classic study of the end of slavery in Cuba. Rebecca J. Scott explores the dynamics of Cuban emancipation, arguing that slavery was not simply abolished by the metropolitan power of Spain or abandoned because of economic contradictions. Rather, slave emancipation was a prolonged, gradual and conflictive process unfolding through a series of social, legal, and economic transformations. Scott demonstrates that slaves themselves helped to accelerate the elimination of slavery. Through flight, participation in nationalist insurgency, legal action, and self-purchase, slaves were able to force the issue, helping to dismantle slavery piece by piece. With emancipation, former slaves faced transformed, but still very limited, economic options. By the end of the nineteenth-century, some chose to join a new and ultimately successful rebellion against Spanish power. In a new afterword, prepared for this edition, the author reflects on the complexities of postemancipation society, and on recent developments in historical methodology that make it possible to address these questions in new ways.

Shop Slavery and Emancipation by William Paine Pdf

Excerpt from Shop Slavery and Emancipation: A Revolutionary Appeal to the Educated Young Men of the Middle Class Abominable dormitories he describes, ate the insufficient food supplied and drudged in the shop. Then when I was fifteen I ran away one Sunday morning to my mother, and told her I would rather die than go on being a draper. That seventeen mile tramp, without breakfast, to deliver that ultimatum is still very vivid in my memory. I felt then most desperately wicked, and now I know it was nearly the best thing I ever did in my life, and not only I, but Mr. Paine. And all the brotherhood of man ed with me that morning out of the house of mean bondage to life and opportunity. But such a lot of us, before it is too late, will not rather die, and there you have the secret of all the tale of pitiful degradation that Mr. Paine recounts so bitterly. Emancipation and Emigration by Joseph Warren Alden Pdf

Excerpt from Emancipation and Emigration: A Plan to Transfer the Freedmen of the South to the Government Lands of the West Fellow Citizens: - If any apology for improving your condition were needed it maty be found in the fact that a large portion of the last forty years of my life was spent, and many thousand dollars invested, in the terrible conflict with the slave power. It is not necessary for me to remind you that the result of that conflict was your emancipation from American slaver by the Republican party, with such leaders and co-laborers as Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, Senators Charles Sumner and Henry Wilson, Rev. Joshua Leavitt, D. D., and Rev. Wm. Goodell, all of whom have now passed away, but whose life-long labors, with many who are still living, culminated in the Emancipation Proclamation of President Lincoln in 1863. But it is, as it seems to me, necessary to remind you that the Republican party of to-day is a very different thing from then - that your liberties and citizenship have now become the stock in trade of corrupt politicians - that your political rights have been bartered away for the promises of your old masters, which they never meant to perform when they made them, and for which they now substitute demands for your return to slavery, with the pecuniary interest of one to two thousand dollars in each able-bodied man left out; consequently when they shoot a man they do not lose that amount of investment in his bod. Among the demands of the "dominant race" is the repeal of the constitutional amendments which made you citizens and gave you the ballot. Of course they did not ask the Republican party to do it directly. They only asked them to put the political power of the nation into the hands of the Democratic party, and the second and third rate politicians now at the head of affairs at Washington were stupid enough to do it, for the poor privilege of occupying the White House for a short time.
