Gbe ipatteb (Tburcb anfc ireQistere hp he parish church is dedicated to Saint Peter; some say to Saints Peter and Paul, and adduce the corporate seal of the church and school as proof of the correctness of their contention. This may have been the case, but it is now called the Church of Saint Peter only, Paul having been dropped at least a century ago. Probably he lagged behind somewhere. The church is supposed to have been first erected after the Norman Conquest. In 1304 it was almost entirely destroyed by fire, along with a number of houses in the immediate neighbourhood. It was shortly afterwards restored in a manner worthy of the period. William Rufus gave the Church of Mansfield, together with all its possessions, to Lincoln Cathedral, and the Bishop of Lincoln continued the patron of the living, receiving in lieu of the rectorial tithes a composition of eight shillings per acre from all the enclosed land in the parish, until the creation of the Diocese of Southwell. Thoroton states that "there were in the Church of Mansfield, before the time of Edward vi., ten chantries, whose land the Queen gave this year (1557) in fee to Christopher Grainger, clerk, the vicar, and William Wilde and John Chambers, the churchwardens of the parish church of Mansfield, to sustain one chaplain or priest. The vicarage of Mansfield, in the King's book, is 7 ys. 6d.; it is now valued at about. 280." During the reign of Edward, the ten chantries, which were for the saying of masses in for the souls of pious benefactors, reverted to the Crown; but in the reign of Philip and Mary they were handed over to the vicar and churchwardens to find a chaplain to celebrate divine service in the parish church for ever. When the chantries were surrendered to...

English Common Law in the Age of Mansfield by James Oldham Pdf
In the eighteenth century, the English common law courts laid the foundation that continues to support present-day Anglo-American law. Lord Mansfield, Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, 1756-1788, was the dominant judicial force behind these developments. In this abridgment of his two-volume book, The Mansfield Manuscripts and the Growth of English Law in the Eighteenth Century, James Oldham presents the fundamentals of the English common law during this period, with a detailed description of the operational features of the common law courts. This work includes revised and updated versions of the historical and analytical essays that introduced the case transcriptions in the original volumes, with each chapter focusing on a different aspect of the law. While considerable scholarship has been devoted to the eighteenth-century English criminal trial, little attention has been given to the civil side. This book helps to fill that gap, providing an understanding of the principal body of substantive law with which America's founding fathers would have been familiar. It is an invaluable reference for practicing lawyers, scholars, and students of Anglo-American legal history.

Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp: A History of Art in Nature by Dagny McKinley Pdf
In 1914, Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield envisioned a secluded institution nestled in the mountains, where art and nature could intersect. By the 1920s, their remote Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp in Steamboat Springs was serving as a hub for top dancers such as José Limon and Harriette Ann Gray to hone their craft. In addition to training thousands of pointed toes and arched feet, the school showcased equestrian jumping and performed plays by masters, including Shakespeare, García Lorca and Tennessee Williams. The theater program eventually attracted budding actors like Julie Harris, Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Biel. Author Dagny McKinley presents the story of America's longest continuously running performing arts camp.

A History of the Middle East by Peter Mansfield Pdf
The definitive history of the Middle East that provides the historical context to today's headlines "The best overall survey of the politics, regional rivalries and economics of the contemporary Arab World." -The Washington Post One of the most crucial, volatile, and complex regions of the modern world, the Middle East has long confounded the dreams of conquerors and peacemakers alike. This now-classic book, and still the essential work on the subject, follows the historic struggles of the Middle East from Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt and Syria, through the slow decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire, to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the history of Islam and its recent resurgence. For this fourth edition, Economist correspondent Nicolas Pelham contributes an extensive new section examining recent developments throughout the Middle East, including the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, the situation in Iran, the region’s relations with the United States under President Obama, the Arab Spring, and more.
