The History of Rome, Book V : the Establishment of the Military Monarchy by Theodor Mommsen Pdf

This is a look at Ancient Rome's early history, from its founding to the expulsion of its kings and the beginning of the Republic. From the intro: "We intend here to relate the history of Italy, not simply the history of the city of Rome. Although, in the formal sense of political law, it was the civic community of Rome which gained the sovereignty first of Italy and then of the world, such a view cannot be held to express the higher and real meaning of history. What has been called the subjugation of Italy by the Romans appears rather, when viewed in its true light, as the consolidation into an united state of the whole Italian stock-a stock of which the Romans were doubtless the most powerful branch, but still were only a branch. The history of Italy falls into two main sections: (1) its internal history down to its union under the leadership of the Latin stock, and (2) the history of its sovereignty over the world. Under the first section, which will occupy the first two books, we shall have to set forth the settlement of the Italian stock in the peninsula; the imperilling of its national and political existence, and its partial subjugation, by nations of other descent and older civilization, Greeks and Etruscans; the revolt of the Italians against the strangers, and the annihilation or subjection of the latter; finally, the struggles between the two chief Italian stocks, the Latins and the Samnites, for the hegemony of the peninsula, and the victory of the Latins at the end of the fourth century before the birth of Christ-or of the fifth century of the city. The second section opens with the Punic wars; it embraces the rapid extension of the dominion of Rome up to and beyond the natural boundaries of Italy, the long status quo of the imperial period, and the collapse of the mighty empire. These events will be narrated in the third and following books."

The History of Rome by Theodor Mommsen Pdf

The classical historian Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903) published his monumental History of Rome between 1854 and 1856. His work was received with widespread acclaim by the scholarly community and the reading public. In 1902 Mommsen was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and acclaimed as 'the greatest living master of the art of historical writing'. Mommsen rejected traditional Enlightenment accounts, which glorified ancient Rome; instead, guided by a new and rigorous criticism of sources, he began the demythologisation of Roman history. In a vivacious and engaging style, Mommsen drew bold parallels between the nineteenth century and classical Rome. Volume 4 covers the establishment of the military monarchy; this English translation, first published in 1866, corresponds to the fourth edition of the German third volume. Part 1 begins with the death of Sulla and ends with the subjugation of the West.

The Making of the Monarchy by A. H. Allcroft Pdf

Excerpt from The Making of the Monarchy: A History of Rome, 78 31 B. C § 1. The Quarrel between Senate and People. - § 2. Development of Monarchy from the Republican Imperium.- § 3. Sketch of the Democratic Programme from Gracchus to Sulla. - § 4. Sulla's Reform, and the Causes of its Failure. § 5. Lepidus: his Career: he Restores the Corn-doles. - § 6. The Democratic Programme, 78 B.C.: Designs of Lepidus. - § 7. The Civil War. - § 8. Causes of the Failure of Lepidus: Attitude of the Democrats: Further Attacks upon the Senate. - § 9. The Senatorial Administration. § 1. The first and last government of ancient Rome was monarchy. From the expulsion of the kings to the year 300 B.C. there was a constant struggle of the masses to win from the classes a proper share in the control of the State. A successful balance was at length effected, and for more than 150 years there was small collision between parties. During these years the parties of plebeians and patricians died out, and were replaced by those of the Senate and of the people: the former by degrees monopolised all the functions and emoluments of government. Monarchy by Xina M. Uhl,Katy Schiel Pdf

The oldest of human institutions, monarchy has been tried in a range of variations through the ages. The absolute power of kings and emperors gave way to constitutional monarchy before losing popularity in the modern age. This compelling guide traces the history of monarchs as early as ancient Egypt, through ancient Rome, the Middle Ages, Early Modern Europe, and the decline of monarchies as more than figureheads in the early twentieth century. Inscriptions, artwork, documents, and more bring color and comprehension to this ancient form of government.
