The History of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Classic Reprint) by James Groenings Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ "This book is not, strictly speaking, a series of sermons or meditations on the sufferings of our Redeemer, but it is rather an explanation of the history of the Passion. It consists of a description of the most important and most interesting trial which has ever come before a court of justice, on whose final decision depends the weal or woe of the whole human race. The book is also a commentary on the greatest drama which has ever been enacted. Even considered from a purely natural point of view, the Passion of our Lord is a drama with which none other can be compared as regards the character of the actors, the magnitude of the action, the importance of the intrigue and the complexity of the plot. The unities of time and place have even been preserved. In preparing this explanation and practical application of the history of the Passion, the author has spared no pains in gathering and using with discretion the best which Catholic learning and research has to offer on the subject. The Mountains of Myrrh by John H. O'rourke Pdf

Excerpt from The Mountains of Myrrh: Reflections on the Sacred Passion These pages, treating in a simple meditative manner of the sufierings of our Blessed Saviour, have already appeared in The Messenger of the Sacred Heart. They are now published in per manent form with the hope of increasing a love for the Sacred Passion. Spiritual writers tell us that the ordinary food of the fervent soul is a devotion to our Lord's sufferings; while the author of The Following of Christ says that there are more lovers of our Lord in His glory on Mount Thabor than in His agony and humili ation on Mount Calvary. In any case we can rest assured that in moments of pain and anguish, -and truly there are many such in all lives, - nothing can be more helpful, nothing more consoling, than to know and remember that our Blessed Master endured pain and sorrow for our sake; and that pain and sorrow bravely and patiently borne make us more and more like. Phases of the Sacred Passion by William Graham Pdf

Excerpt from Phases of the Sacred Passion: A Lenten Course Synopsis - Introduction. - The Cross both a power and a spell. No wonder, for it sums up the life, teaching and ideals of Christ, Son of the living God, though often directly opposed to pleasure, wealth and culture, the gods of the world; yet its attractive force irresistible. Once a badge of infamy, the Cross is now the symbol, the flag, the banner, of the conquering Christ, and His advancing kingdom. In this uplifting and glorification of the symbol, lurks the danger of our forgetting what the Cross really meant to Christ in life; and what it ought to mean in ours. Hence, the need of dwelling on the sacred Passion of Our Lord, of which the Cross is the synonym. I. The Cross in shadow ever lay over the world; for it implies sacrifice, the need and accompaniment of sin. Rested personally on Our Lord all through His human life. His consciousness of the future. Horror of impending and anticipated evils. The types and prophesies of the Old Testament were to Him shadows of the Cross. The tree of life, the mur der of Abel, Noah carrying wood to build the ark, Isaac bearing the wood on which he should be offered in sacrifice by his own father, the wonder working rod of Moses, the life of David, all traced out in His mind the image of the Cross on which He should redeem the world. II. As He advances in life, the shadows deepen. They outline the Cross in all its terrible features. Finally, they culminate as threatening clouds massing in the sky; and the storm they presage, breaks in full fury on Him, in the dread hour of the agony in the garden. The Passion these shadows outlined now begins. Lessons - Lives of most of us lie in shadow. Deep shade or thick darkness tinge, if they do not envelope, what are deemed the sunniest and merriest lives. Death, and sin, and uncertainty of the future, are enough to darken all lives. Whence came light, peace, hope and rest? From that very Cross, the shadows of which darkened the life of Christ. Under its shadow will the soul find forgiveness and peace and eternal rest. The History of the Sacred Passion (new Edition with Enhanced Text) by Luis de la Palma Pdf

"The History of the Sacred Passion" (also known as "The Sacred Passion") by Luis de la Palma (Spain, 1559-1641) was first published in 1624 in Spain, and has been a steady and continuous resource in the 400 years since. It is one of the most influential theological yet accessible explorations of Our Lord's suffering and death and guides the reader into a historical, spiritual and at the same time practical contemplation of the week leading up to Jesus Christ's crucifixion, death and burial. This edition presents de la Palma's classic work for the first time in a clear and accurately edited format in english. Using various enhancements, it brings it closer to the 21st century reader by making its narrative easier to read and follow, but without changing the excellent and enduring 1872 english translation by Henry Coleridge. For example, latin texts have been maintained and presented in such a way that they are unobtrusive and allow the reader to more easily advance and effectively follow the overall narrative; latin texts originally without english translation, or whose meaning cannot be directly discerned from the contextual english text, have been translated, with the english translation presented between curly brackets; various english words have been shown in a more relatable spelling where the original might today be confusing; the chapters have been conveniently separated into sub-chapters with headings, following La Palma's original, to facilitate a more comfortable reading; praise for La Palma's work has been sourced from the 17th century through to the 20th and presented in the early pages; typography and layout have been carefully designed such that reading is easier and comfortable on the eye; and so on. Where the original latin text is a scriptural quote, the Douay-Rheims bible version english translation has been used.It is hoped that the reader reap the many benefits that this classic work of a wholly accessible Christian theology so engrossingly offers; a significant reason why La Palma's book has remained doggedly relevant to this day.
