Days of Awe by Atalia Omer Pdf

For many Jewish people in the mid-twentieth century, Zionism was an unquestionable tenet of what it meant to be Jewish. Seventy years later, a growing number of American Jews are instead expressing solidarity with Palestinians, questioning old allegiances to Israel. How did that transformation come about? What does it mean for the future of Judaism? In Days of Awe, Atalia Omer examines this shift through interviews with a new generation of Jewish activists, rigorous data analysis, and fieldwork within a progressive synagogue community. She highlights people politically inspired by social justice campaigns including the Black Lives Matter movement and protests against anti-immigration policies. These activists, she shows, discover that their ethical outrage at US policies extends to Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. For these American Jews, the Jewish history of dispossession and diaspora compels a search for solidarity with liberation movements. This shift produces innovations within Jewish tradition, including multi-racial and intersectional conceptions of Jewishness and movements to reclaim prophetic Judaism. Charting the rise of such religious innovation, Omer points toward the possible futures of post-Zionist Judaism.

The Light of Other Days by Arthur C. Clarke,Stephen Baxter Pdf

From Arthur C. Clarke, the brilliant mind that brought us 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Stephen Baxter, one of the most cogent SF writers of his generation, comes a novel of a day, not so far in the future, when the barriers of time and distance have suddenly turned to glass. When a brilliant, driven industrialist harnesses cutting-edge physics to enable people everywhere, at trivial cost, to see one another at all times—around every corner, through every wall—the result is the sudden and complete abolition of human privacy, forever. Then the same technology proves able to look backward in time as well. The Light of Other Days is a story that will change your view of what it is to be human. The Homes of Other Days by Thomas Wright Pdf

Excerpt from The Homes of Other Days: A History of Domestic Manners and Sentiments in England, From the Earliest Known Period to Modern Times My dear Lord Lytton, Years not a few are now passed away since the excellent romance of "Harold the Last of the Saxon Kings" was first given to the world. I have a vivid remembrance of the pleasure with which I read it I was then comparatively young, but earnest, in historical and archaeological research. I remember having been much struck with the description of the residence of the sorceress Hilda, - of the change from the Roman villa to the mansion of the Anglo-Saxon; and I felt the greatness of the instinctive appreciation of historical truth which was displayed in it. In reading this, as well as other parts of your Lordship's work, I often thought what a useful book would be a complete and carefully compiled history of the domestic manners and economy of our forefathers, from the earliest period at which we can obtain any knowledge of it down to more recent times, - in fact, to our own modem home. This idea often recurred to my thoughts, until an opportunity was given me of carrying it into effect, though imperfectly, in a series of papers in the then popular "Art Journal." These afterwards, revised and considerably enlarged, were published in a volume in 1862, to which I gave the simple title of "The History of Domestic Manners and Sentiments in England during the Middle Ages." This book was received favourably, and is now, I believe, out of print; and I have been induced to give to press a new edition, which I have so much altered in revision, and to which I have added so much, that it may be considered as a new work, and therefore I have considerably modified its title. Two Homes by Claire Masurel Pdf

"Parents looking for a book about separation or divorce will find few offerings as positive, matter-of-fact, or child-centered as this one. . . . Simple, yet profoundly satisfying." – Booklist (starred review) At Mommy’s house, Alex has a soft chair. At Daddy’s house, Alex has a rocking chair. In each home, Alex also has a special bedroom and lots of friends to play with. But whether Alex is with Mommy or with Daddy, one thing always stays the same - Alex is loved. The gently reassuring text focuses on what is gained rather than what is lost when parents divorce, while the sensitive illustrations, depicting two unique homes in all their small details, firmly establish Alex’s place in both of them. Two Homes will help children - and parents - embrace even the most difficult of changes with an open and optimistic heart.

Universal Design 2014: Three Days of Creativity and Diversity by H.A. Caltenco,P.-O. Hedvall,A. Larsson Pdf

Universal Design, Design for All and Inclusive Design are all aimed at dismantling physical and social barriers to inclusion in all areas of life. Engagement in universal design is on the increase worldwide as practitioners and researchers explore creative and desirable solutions to shape the future of universal design products and practices. This book is a collection of the papers presented at UD2014, the International Conference on Universal Design, held in Lund, Sweden, in June 2014. The conference offered a creative and diverse meeting place for all participants to exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas, and to build global connections and creative networks for future work on universal design. The themes of UD2014 span many aspects of societal life, and the papers included here cover areas as diverse as architecture, public transport, educational and play environments, housing, universal workspaces, and the Internet of things, as well as designs and adaptations for assistive technology. The book clearly demonstrates the breadth of universal design and its ongoing adoption in societies all over the world, and will be of interest to anyone whose work involves building a more inclusive environment for all.
