Supportive Care of Children with Cancer by Children's Oncology Group Pdf

Three of every four children and adolescents with cancer can now be cured. However, physicians are using increasingly intensive treatment regimens. These treatments can expose patients to toxic chemotherapeutic agents, invasive surgical procedures, and radiation oncology interventions that risk disfigurement, neuropsychiatric damage, and life-threatening organ toxicity. These potentially dire consequences have mandated that advances in cancer treatment go hand in hand with supportive care measures that sustain patients through their therapeutic ordeal and allow each patient to achieve maximum quality of life. In this book, now in its third edition, the discipline of supportive care in pediatric oncology is covered in depth. Supportive Care of Children with Cancer is a ready-reference handbook designed for use at the hospital bedside, in the oncology outpatient clinic, or in the physician's office. To create this book, leading experts in the field recommended approaches to supportive care which were then critically reviewed by members of the Children's Oncology Group, the world's largest cooperative study group for children's cancer. For students, house officers, fellows, pediatric oncologists, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, and psychologists, this book provides essential information about the care of pediatric oncology patients. The third edition features a new chapter on recognition, prevention, and remediation of burnout in pediatric oncology staff members, while throughout the book, chapters have been revised and updated to reflect the impact of new antibiotic agents, new antiemetics, and new approaches to pain management.

Supportive Care of Children with Cancer by Arthur Ablin Pdf

Because six of every seven children and adolescents with cancer can now be cured, the quality of life during and after treatment is displacing cure as the paramount objective. With this shift in emphasis, attention to supportive care in pediatric cancer therapy has become as important as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. In this book, now in its second edition, the discipline of supportive care in pediatric oncology is covered in depth. Supportive Care of Children with Cancer is a ready-reference handbook designed for use at the hospital bedside, in the oncology outpatient clinic, or in the physician's office. Five new chapters have been added and significant revisions have been made in each of the others. The new chapters reflect new ideas in the management of heretofore incompletely understood mechanisms of hemorrhage and thrombosis, the recognition of the increasing numbers of patients with various kinds of transplants and the more prominent role their long-term follow-up plays in pediatric oncology, the socioeconomically driven rapid changes in the practice and delivery of health care, and the deservedly increased attention to the child with terminal illness. Other important changes in individual chapters continue to keep this bedside handbook current. Approaches to supportive care were recommended by leading experts in each field, then critically reviewed by members of the Children's Cancer Group, the world's largest cooperative study group for children's cancer. For students, house officers, fellows, pediatric oncologists, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, and psychologists, this book provides convenient access to essential information about the careof pediatric oncology patients.

Pediatric Oncology by Ka Wah Chan,Richard B. Raney, Jr. Pdf

Childhood cancer was almost always fatal before 1970. Today, 80% of ch- dren diagnosed with cancer will survive at least 5 years; 70% will be cured. However, cancer continues to be the leading cause of nonaccident-related deaths in children. More children die each year from cancer than from c- tic ?brosis, diabetes, asthma, AIDS, and congenital abnormalities combined. Nine children die from cancer every school day. Despite the fact that pediatric cancers account for only a small p- centage of the total cancer burden, more effective therapies are needed to improve mortality rates in children. Therefore, our research priority must be the development of new agents and new therapies for childhood cancer. M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has been caring for children with c- cer since its doors opened over 60 years ago. This institution has been home to several research and clinical pioneers whose innovative work has in?uenced and shaped the practice of pediatric oncology throughout the world. Notably, Drs. Wataru W. Sutow, Donald Pinkel, and Norman Jaffe have been credited with introducing curative therapies for children with leukemia and solid tumors. Cancer treatment involves far more than administering chemoth- apy and surgically excising tumors. It requires a multidisciplinary - proach to patient management, particularly in the treatment of solid - mors, which pose the biggest challenge in cancer care today. Surgery and radiotherapy as well as radiographic and pathologic assessments of response are critical factors in the treatment of children with cancer.
