The Integument of Arthropods by Albert Glenn Richards Pdf

The Integument of Arthropods was first published in 1951. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This critical monograph presents a review and synthesis of the literature on the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the integument of arthropod animals. The volume covers and collates material published through 1949 on the chemical and physical properties, the structure and development, and the permeability of the integument of insects, crustacea, and their relatives. There is, in addition, an indexed bibliography of some 1800 references, and a subject index. The first section treats the physical and chemical properties of the entire cuticle and the cuticular components. In the second section, the structure and development of the integument are traced, with a classification of recognizable subdivision, and separate chapters on molting and specialized structures. The third section takes up the problems of permeability with emphasis on the complexity and relative scarcity of valid data on the subject. Most of the references in the bibliography relate directly to the material presented, but references to similar phenomena or structures found in other groups of organisms or in artificial models are included. To facilitate independent use of the bibliography, each reference is followed by a list of the pages where the article is cited. Fourteen tables and over two hundred line drawings, diagrams, and photomicrographs, grouped into 65 text figures, show chemical configurations, representative structural details, and properties. The book provides a much needed reference work for entomologists and those working in related fields of zoology, chemistry, biochemistry, insect physiology, and ecology.

Biology of the Integument by J. Bereiter-Hahn,A.G. Matoltsy,K.S. Richards Pdf

The integument plays an important role in the survival of meta zoans by separating and protecting them from a hostile environ ment. Its function ranges from protection against injury and in fection; partlcipation in the regulation of body temperature and water balance, to respiratory activity, monitoring of the environ ment and production of signals related to behaviour. All these result from specific structural, biochemical and physiological properties of intra-and extracellular components of the integu ment. Thus its characterization can be best accomplished by a multidisciplinary approach with authors specialized in different fields of science. This multi-author book, in two volumes, provides an up-to date survey of the literature. The first volume deals with the integument of invertebrates, the second with that of vertebrates, both organized primarily on a phylum basis. As the level of knowledge on the integument of phyla differs considerably, the information provided is correspondingly either limited or con densed. For some of the smaller groups of invertebrates little information is available, as often only a few electron micrographs are to be found in the literature; on the other hand, from the large body of knowledge existing for vertebrates, particularly for mammals, no complete overview can be provided, but publica tions giving access to further information have been reviewed critically.

The Vertebrate IntegumentVolume 1 by Theagarten Lingham-Soliar Pdf

The vertebrate integument arose about 450 million years ago as an ‘armour’ of dermal bony plates in small, jawless fish-like creatures, informally known as the ostracoderms. This book reviews the major changes that have occurred in the vertebrate integument from its beginnings to the present day. Critical questions concerning the origin, structure and functional biology of the bony integument are discussed and intrinsically linked to major steps in vertebrate evolution and phylogeny—the origin of jaws and the origin of teeth. The discussions include the origins of mineralization of major vertebrate skeletal components such as the dermatocranium, branchial arches and vertebral column. The advances that led to the origin of modern fishes and their phylogenetic development are reviewed and include the evolution of fins and replacement of the bony plates with several types of dermal scales. The evolution of reptiles saw a major transformation of the integument, with the epidermis becoming the protective outermost layer, from which the scales arose, while the dermis lay below it. The biological significance of the newly-evolved β-keratin in reptilian scales, among the toughest natural materials known, is discussed in the context of its major contribution to the great success of reptiles and to the evolution of feathers and avian flight. The dermis in many vertebrates is strengthened by layers of oppositely oriented cross-fibres, now firmly entrenched as a design principle of biomechanics. Throughout the book conventional ideas are discussed and a number of new hypotheses are presented in light of the latest developments. The long evolutionary history of vertebrates indicates that the significance of the Darwinian concept of “survival of the fittest” may be overstated, including in our own mammalian origins and that chance often plays a major role in evolutionary patterns. Extensive illustrations are included to support the verbal descriptions. Professor Theagarten Lingham-Soliar is in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Skin Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine by Mohammad Albanna,James H Holmes IV Pdf

The skin is the largest human organ system. Loss of skin integrity due to injury or illness results in a substantial physiologic imbalance and ultimately in severe disability or death. From burn victims to surgical scars and plastic surgery, the therapies resulting from skin tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are important to a broad spectrum of patients. Skin Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine provides a translational link for biomedical researchers across fields to understand the inter-disciplinary approaches which expanded available therapies for patients and additional research collaboration. This work expands on the primary literature on the state of the art of cell therapies and biomaterials to review the most widely used surgical therapies for the specific clinical scenarios. Explores cellular and molecular processes of wound healing, scar formation, and dermal repair Includes examples of animal models for wound healing and translation to the clinical world Presents the current state of, and clinical opportunities for, extracellular matrices, natural biomaterials, synthetic biomaterials, biologic skin substitutes, and adult and fetal stem and skin cells for skin regenerative therapies and wound management Discusses new innovative approaches for wound healing including skin bioprinting and directed cellular therapies
