The Integument of Arthropods was first published in 1951. This critical monograph presents a review and synthesis of the literature on the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the integument of arthropod animals. The volume covers and collates material published through 1949 on the chemical and physical properties, the structure and development, and the permeability of the integument of insects, crustacea, and their relatives. There is, in addition, an indexed bibliography of some 1800 references, and a subject index. The first section treats the physical and chemical properties of the entire cuticle and the cuticular components. In the second section, the structure and development of the integument are traced, with a classification of recognizable subdivision, and separate chapters on molting and specialized structures. The third section takes up the problems of permeability with emphasis on the complexity and relative scarcity of valid data on the subject. Most of the references in the bibliography relate directly to the material presented, but references to similar phenomena or structures found in other groups of organisms or in artificial models are included. To facilitate independent use of the bibliography, each reference is followed by a list of the pages where the article is cited. Fourteen tables and over two hundred line drawings, diagrams, and photomicrographs, grouped into 65 text figures, show chemical configurations, representative structural details, and properties. The book provides a much needed reference work for entomologists and those working in related fields of zoology, chemistry, biochemistry, insect physiology, and ecology.

The present edition may be regarded as a descendant, much changed and greatly enlarged, of the late Dr A. D. Imms' Outlines of Entomology, first published in 1942. This went through three further editions without much change, but after the death of the original author a fifth, revised edition by Professor o. W. Richards and myself appeared in 1959 and a sixth in 1978. The book now appears in a considerably extended version in which I have tried to provide a more balanced introduction to the whole field of modern entomology by dealing with several aspects of the subject not discussed at all in previous editions. Thus, in addition to innumerable lesser changes in the sections on insect structure, function, development, classification and phylogeny, I have completely recast the earlier chapter on some important modes of life in insects. This now includes a far wider range of biological topic;s well exemplified by the insects and should, I hope, appeal not only to, those already dedicated to entomology but also to others with more general biological interests. A completely new chapter on the biology of insect populations has also been added and may serve to indicate the debt which modern ecological theory owes to work on insect populations. Fourteen years have passed since the publication of David Spencer Smith's Insect Cells: Their Structure and Function. Here the results of a decade of electronmicroscopic studies on insect cells were summarized in an organized and integrated fashion for the first time, and the ultrastructural characteristics of different specialized cells and tissues were abundantly illustrated in the 117 plates this monograph contained. In the intervening period great progress has been made in the field of Insect Ultrastructure. Organelles not even mentioned in Smith's book, such as synaptonemal complexes, clathrin baskets, fusomes, and retinular junc tions, have been identified and functions proposed for them. There have also been many technical advances that have profoundly influenced the direction of subsequent research. A spectacular example would be the development by Miller and Beatty of the chromosomal spreading technique which allowed for the first time ultrastructural studies on segments of chromosomes containing genes in various stages of replication and transcription. Then there is the freeze-fracture procedure first described by Moor and his colleagues. This technique permitted an analysis of intercellular junctions that was impossible with the conventional sectioning methods. The results greatly clarified our understanding of the channels for ion movement and the permeability barriers between cells and also the membrane changes that occur during the embryonic differentiation and metamorphosis of various types of insect cells.

For example, many commercially available in struments are geared to measure in grams, while the forces commonly en countered in studying insects are in the milligram range. Therefore, tech niques developed in the study of insects or in those fields concerned with the control of insect pests are often unique. Methods for measuring things are common to all sciences. Advances sometimes depend more on how something was done than on what was measured; indeed a given field often progresses from one technique to another as new methods are discovered, developed, and modified. Just as often, some of these techniques find their way into the classroom when the problems involved have been sufficiently ironed out to permit students to master the manipulations in a few laboratory periods. Many specialized techniques are confined to one specific research labo ratory. Although methods may be considered commonplace where they are used, in another context even the simplest procedures may save con siderable time. It is the purpose of this series (1) to report new develop ments in methodology, (2) to reveal sources of groups who have dealt with and solved particular entomological problems, and (3) to describe ex periments which might be applicable for use in biology laboratory courses.

Studies on cuticle demand a variety of techniques, and examples of the following are illustrated in this book (fluorescence, phase contrast, polariza tion and Nomarski interference microscopy; infrared absorp tion; transmission and scanning electron microscopy; autora diography analyzed by electron microscopy; negative staining in the electron microscope; optical diffraction, high angle X-ray diffraction, low angle X -ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction). I am well aware that the biophysical parts of this book are less incomplete than other aspects. A developmental biologist or a biochemist would have further elaborated other parts ofthe subject matter. Only one previous author, RICHARDS (1951)hasdevoted a book to arthropod cuticle.
