The Invention of the Sequel by William H. Hinrichs Pdf

This book proposes a new way of tracing the history of the Early Modern Spanish novel through the prism of literary continuation. It identifies and examines the Golden Age narratives that invented the sequel and the narrative genres that the sequel in turn invented. This book proposes a new way of tracing the history of the Early Modern Spanish novel through the prism of literary continuation. It identifies and examines the Golden Age narratives that invented the sequel and the narrative genres that the sequel in turn invented. The author explores the rivalries between apocryphal and authorized sequelists that forged modern notions of authorship and authorial property. The book also defines the sequel's forms and functions, filling a major gap in literary theory in general and Peninsular literary studies in particular. Notably, the author demonstrates that the sequel develops first and foremost in Early Modern Spain, an unacknowledged and unexamined contribution to Western letters. With its panoramic scope, this study serves as an introduction to the central novelistic genres and texts of Early Modern Spain. From this foundational starting point, it alsooffers a general framework for understanding imaginative expansion in subsequent time periods and literary traditions. William H. Hinrichs is a founding faculty member and Assistant Professor of Modern Languages at Bard High School Early College, Queens.

Dreamlander by K. M. Weiland Pdf

What if it were possible to live two very different lives in two separate worlds? What if the dreams we awaken from are the fading memories of that second life? What if one day we woke up in the wrong world?Every night, a woman on a black warhorse gallops through the mist in Chris Redston's dreams. Every night, she begs him not to come to her. Every night, she aims her rifle at his head and fires. The last thing Chris expects--or wants--is for this nightmare to be real. But when he wakes up in the world of his dreams, he has to choose between the likelihood that he's gone spectacularly bonkers or the possibility that he's just been let in on the secret of the ages.Only one person in a generation may cross the worlds. These chosen few are the Gifted, called from Earth into Lael to shape the epochs of history--and Chris is one of them. But before he figures that out, he accidentally endangers both worlds by resurrecting a vengeful prince intent on claiming the powers of the Gifted for himself. Together with a suspicious princess and a guilt-ridden Cherazii warrior, Chris must hurl himself into a battle to save a country from war, two worlds from annihilation, and himself from a dream come way too true.

Come Find Me by Mike Arsuaga Pdf

Nearing the end of her life and in fragile health, Ally Corrigan, the world's richest woman, summons young journalist Kris Parsons for a tell-all interview. He expects to learn the secrets behind the unparalleled financial success of her and deceased husband, Joe, which began more than sixty years earlier when they stepped from the Maine backwoods to claim a multi-million-dollar lottery prize. Instead, Ally Corrigan spins an incredible tale covering eight hundred thousand years. H. G. Wells' novel was a true account. The Time Traveler existed. Most important, Weena lived to tell her story. At the end of an incredible narrative about love found, lost, and rediscovered; a people's redemption; and Weena's adaptation to twenty-first-century life, Kris doubts his host's sanity, but she has a final proof to offer.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER More than ONE MILLION copies sold A TODAY Show Read with Jenna Book Club Pick A New York Times Notable Book, and Chosen by Oprah Daily, Time, NPR, The Washington Post, Bill Gates and Barack Obama as a Best Book of the Year “Wise and wildly entertaining . . . permeated with light, wit, youth.” —The New York Times Book Review “A classic that we will read for years to come.” —Jenna Bush Hager, Read with Jenna book club “Fantastic. Set in 1954, Towles uses the story of two brothers to show that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as we might hope.” —Bill Gates “A real joyride . . . elegantly constructed and compulsively readable.” —NPR The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction—to the City of New York. Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes. “Once again, I was wowed by Towles’s writing—especially because The Lincoln Highway is so different from A Gentleman in Moscow in terms of setting, plot, and themes. Towles is not a one-trick pony. Like all the best storytellers, he has range. He takes inspiration from famous hero’s journeys, including The Iliad, The Odyssey, Hamlet, Huckleberry Finn, and Of Mice and Men. He seems to be saying that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as an interstate highway. But, he suggests, when something (or someone) tries to steer us off course, it is possible to take the wheel.” – Bill Gates

The Invention of Man by Vincent McCaffrey Pdf

In love, but broke, and dependent now on social security, the sixty-eight-year-old bookseller has converted a fifty-year-old camper trailer to a small bookshop of about 1500 volumes, pulled by his thirty-year-old pick-up truck. His idea is to be a modern-day 'book peddler' in an American tradition going back to Parson Weems and once reimagined by Christopher Morely in Parnassus on Wheels. Meanwhile, he is still pursued by the FBI who believe he is connected to a libertarian revolutionary group (which he is), with designs on overthrowing the authoritarian government (true enough) through violence (which he is not). His aim is simply to wander the back roads of the nation, looking for 'First Principles,' and the characters that might make those work, while espousing good books and selling enough of those to pay for food and gas.

Doomed by Chuck Palahniuk Pdf

Having somewhat reluctantly escaped from Hell, she now wanders the Purgatory that is Earth as a ghostly spirit, seeking her do-gooding celebrity parents, fighting the malign control of Satan, recounting the disgracefully funny (to us, anyway) encounter with her grandfather in a fetid highway rest stop in Upstate New York when she . . . oh, never mind, and climaxing in a rendezvous with destiny on the new, totally plastic continent in the Pacific called, not at all accidentally, Madlantis. Dante Alighieri, watch your back, Chuck Palahniuk is gaining on you.

From the author of A Tangle of Knots and Absolutely Almost, a touching story about a boy who won't let one tragic accident define him. Trent’s pretty positive the entire disaster was his fault, so for him middle school feels like a fresh start, a chance to prove to everyone that he's not the horrible screw-up they seem to think he is. If only Trent could make that fresh start happen. It isn’t until Trent gets caught up in the whirlwind that is Fallon Little—the girl with the mysterious scar across her face—that things begin to change. Because fresh starts aren’t always easy. The Sequel Superior by Edward K. Eckhart-Zinn Pdf

The Sequel Superior By: Edward K. Eckhart-Zinn Edward K. Eckhart-Zinn believes strongly that the age of internet criticism has led to a new path of viewing film and television, or by the encompassing terminology, “screen work”. A healthy array of screen work subjects are covered in The Sequel Superior, from the serialization of film through franchises like Star Wars or the MCU, to the overlooked impact your personal life has on any constructed artworks, exploring just how massive and engaged that link is. This book is equally for creators and critics alike, bringing new light to conceptually finding “objective factors” in “subjective artistry”. Screen works of all kinds are heavily dissected on this figurative operating table, such as Rick and Morty, Breaking Bad, The Simpsons, and the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The modern screen work climate is anatomically deconstructed to render an almost scientific schematic, breaking down elements such as tropes, hype, plot threads, plot holes, the fairly new presence of the internet, fandom, fan fiction, fanfare, the benefits of an animated medium, rosy retrospection, nostalgia, and all of their respective effects to generate the take o the current-day media environment. Instead of retreading the continued deconstruction of such antique masterpieces like Casablanca or The Shining, we instead immerse ourselves in the less respected yet extremely popular “popcorn movie” and attempt to understand why the highest grossing films for the last ten years have all been sequel installments. This book posits that there truly are right ways and wrong ways of making this artwork, and the consumer, critic, and creator can all benefit greatly from its perspectives.
