Mining, Displacement, and Matriliny in Meghalaya by Bitopi Dutta Pdf

This book studies how Development-Induced Displacement (DID) radically restructures gender relations in indigenous tribal societies. Through an indepth case study of the Indian state of Meghalaya, one of the few matrilineal societies of the world, it analyses how people cope with conflicts in their perception of self, family, and society brought on by the transition from traditional modes of living to increased urbanisation, and how these experiences are different for men and women. It looks at the ways in which this gendered change is experienced inter-generationally in different contexts of people’s lives, including work and leisure activities. The book also investigates people’s attitudes towards matrilineal structures and their perception of change on matriliny where mining has played a role in building their view of their matrilineal tradition. Drawing on extensive interviews with individuals directly affected by this phenomenon, the book, part of the Transition in Northeastern India series, makes a significant contribution to the study of DID. It will be useful for scholars and researchers of urbanisation, gender studies, Northeast India studies, development studies, minority studies, public policy, political studies, and sociology.

Folklore Identity Development by Dr. Soumen Sen Pdf

The essays are written in the context of the so-called tribal areas of the north-eastern region of India. The base data in most cases have however been collected from Meghalaya, the Khasi-Jaintia Hills in particular, my primary research universe. However, the ethnic groups living in the mountainous terrain of India’s north-east, show a characteristic unity, despite linguistic and cultural diversities, that of being in a state of social format called ‘tribal’ facing similar problems of static life, economy and under-development. Added to this are the tensions generated in recent years when education and some waves of development reached the region and tribal self-governing states in the Indian Union came in to being. Consequently, new issues have come into the fore–the issues relating to self-assertion, retention of the age-old cultural identity, the crisis of adjustment between tradition and modernity, and above all, the tensions of a change-over from the tranquil folklife to modern hurly-burly including those of the fast moving world in the days of globalization. Consequently, there also appeared a concern with folklore, the search for a ‘lore’ of essential core, to write a new history. Warfare and Society in British India, 1757–1947 by Ashutosh Kumar,Kaushik Roy Pdf

This book explores the intricate and intimate relationship between military organization, imperial policy, and society in colonial South Asia. The chapters in the volume focus on technology, logistics, and state building. The present volume highlights the salient features of expansion and consolidation of imperial control over the subcontinent, and ultimate demise of the Raj. Further, it turns the spotlight on to subaltern challenges to imperialism as well as the role of non-combatants in warfare. The volume: • Deals with both conventional and guerrilla conflicts and focuses on the frontiers (both North-West and North-East, including Burma); • Looks at the army as an institution rather than present a chronological account of military operations, which highlights the complex and tortuous relationship between combat institution, colonial state, and Indian society; • Integrates top-down approaches in military and strategic studies with the bottom-up perspectives and discusses on how the conduct of war (organisation and technology) is related to the economic, societal, and cultural impact of war. A rich account of the British ‘Army in India’, this book will be essential reading for scholars and researchers of South Asian history, military history, political history, colonialism, and the British Empire.
