Journal of the Waterloo Campaign (kept throughout the campaign of 1815) by General Alexander Cavalié Mercer Pdf

Without doubt, one of the finest accounts of a participant of the Waterloo campaign. Mercer was famously in charge of "G" troop RHA during the campaign, and from the journal he kept at the time, he formed this book. It is written with a jaunty air more often seen in the writings of French cavalry officers memoirs, a certain irreverence to rank and custom (his description of the Duc de Berri is particularly cutting) and a keen eye for detail and the anecdote. This edition is the second volume of a two volume series as originally published. Having been stationed in Belgium for over a month during which time he offers a number of telling remarks on the country and its inhabitants, and their enthusiasm for the conflict, his troop arrived belatedly at the battle of Quatre Bars on the 16th June 1815 as the fighting died down. He was involved in covering the retreat of the Allied forces northward to Waterloo on the 17th. During this retreat Mercer sights Napoleon riding with the vanguard of his advanced forces, as he struggles to cover his retreating comrades, in a moment he refers to as "sublime". During the battle on the 18th his troop is in the thick of the fighting, during which time Mercer's account leaves no detail out, apart from his disobeying Wellington's order to avoid counter-battery fire. As the battle rolls on the magnificent and yet foolhardy charges of the massed French cavalry are recounted with their brave but ultimately futile attempt to break the squares on the ridge, Mercer and his troop pour fire into the horsemen mercilessly. As the Armée du Nord recoils from its final attack in disarray, Mercer is ordered with his men to follow up the retreating hordes, he replies to his superior "How?" as the charnel house surrounding his position contains the dead and dying horses needed to pull his guns. Essential reading. Author - General Alexander Cavalié Mercer (1783-1868)

Journal of the Waterloo Campaign by Mercer Pdf

Journal of the Waterloo Campaign is one of the most eloquent and impressive first-hand accounts of Napoleon Bonaparte's dramatic demise. It is a true classic of the literature of the Napoleonic Wars. Taking us from the lulls and hard marching in Belgium and France, to the battle of Quatre Bras (where Mercer fired a few rounds at Napoleon himself), and finally to the ferocious fighting at Waterloo and Mercer's own bold contribution to the larger Allied victory. 'The book is essential for any study of the Waterloo campaign' - Philip J. Haythornthwaite, leading military historian. Captain Cavalie Mercer (1783-1868), commander of G troop of the Royal Horse Artillery in Wellington's army, was a skilled writer who recorded the day's events each evening in vivid and poetic detail. Never before or since has the experience of the entire campaign been brought so thoroughly to life. Albion Press is an imprint of Endeavour Press, the UK's leading independent digital publisher. Journal of the Waterloo Campaign - Volume 2 by General Cavalie Mercer Pdf

The author of this book was commander of 'G' Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, in Wellington's army, who jotted down notes on the events of the day each evening. It is an account of what he saw and felt from leaving Colchester for Belgium on 8 April 1815 to his final return to England at the end of January 1816. It is a remarkable and compelling account, especially of the three days which ended the career of Napoleon. Mercer's troop was at Quatre Bras, where he got off a few rounds at Napoleon himself, and at Waterloo. There are graphic descriptions of the battles and of his tour over the battlefield the day after, with its appalling scenes of carnage and the sight of the locals looting the dead, and the not-quite dead. It is an outstanding example of the literature of the Napoleonic wars, and it has a rarity as the memoir of an artillery officer, and a troop commander at that.

This early work is a fascinating read for any war historian, amateur and professional alike. A thoroughly engaging collection of notes taken each evening after the scenes and events of the day were over by the compiler s father during the 1815 Waterloo Campaign. Readers will be delighted with insight that this journal provides on a bygone age. Far from being another fact-based account of military operations, here is the diary of the writer s personal impressions of time spent in the army the tedium of out-quarters, the fatigues of the march, and the hardships of the bivouac . Journal Of The Waterloo Campaign by General Cavalié Mercer Pdf

Journal of the Waterloo Campaign remains one of the most famous personal accounts of the climactic three days which ended the military career and empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. Captain Cavalié Mercer (1783–1868), was a skilled writer who recorded the day's events each evening. As a result, readers can experience through Mercer's keen eye the turbulence and graphic immediacy of the entire campaign: the news of Napoleon's return from Elba; the landing of Wellington's forces in Belgium; the lulls and hard marching; the battle at Quatre Bras (where Mercer fired a few rounds at Napoleon himself); Wellington's retreat; the ferocious fighting at Waterloo; and Mercer's own bold contribution to the larger Allied victory.
