The Kangaroo and the Porpoise by Pamela Lofts Pdf

This story was told by Agnes Lippo from the Aboriginal community of Belyuen in the Northern Territory, where people from the Larrakia and Waigite language groups live. The illustrations in this book are adapted from paintings of the story done by the children at Belyuen School. Bill Turner, Head Teacher at Belyuen School in 1987, said "'The Kangaroo and the Porpoise' is one of the many stories from the very small Aboriginal community of Belyuen. We hope publishing these stories will enable us to buy materials for the school. We want to continue to document the culture of the people at Belyuen."

Australian Children's Books: 1989-2000 by Marcie Muir,Kerry White Pdf

All Australian children's books published from 1989 to 2000 are listed in this essential reference for those who appreciate the richness of Australian writing for children. Following the same format as volumes 1 and 2 in this series chronicling books published as early as 1774, entries include publishing details, the number of illustrations, and the awards received for each book. This third volume follows the continuing careers of authors such as Mem Fox, Bob Graham, Robin Klein, and Paul Jennings, and traces changes in the popularity of Australian themes and settings to identify publishing trends. Varied cultural aspects of modern-day life are shown, from globalization, commercialism, and the rise of the middle class in Asia to desktop publishing, outcome-based school curricula, and the modern obsession with celebrities all of which are reflected in the type and quantity of books produced by Australian writers and publishers. The wealth of included material will extend researchers' understanding of the range of Australian children's books. "

The Gold Coast Transformed by Tor Hundloe,Bridgette McDougall,Craig Page Pdf

The Gold Coast is one of Australia's premier tourism destinations, a city cut out of coastal vegetation, including paperbark swamps, mangroves and rainforests of worldwide significance. The Gold Coast Transformed is a collection of integrated chapters identifying and assessing the environmental impacts of the building of Australia's sixth largest city. From the time of the first timber-getters through to the present, the book traces the cumulative impacts of humans on the now World Heritage-listed rainforest and surrounding ecosystems. The city's natural and engineered environments are both fascinating and vulnerable. The construction of massive high-rise apartment blocks, on what were frontal beach dunes, is one of the fundamental mistakes not to be repeated. The book illustrates how and why major environmentally destructive development took place and discusses the impacts of such development on the Gold Coast's beaches, wildlife, and terrestrial and marine environments, such as the destruction of riparian mangrove forest. The Gold Coast Transformed also shows the possibility of sustaining natural populations and reducing the city's ecological footprint. It will be of interest to ecologists, environmental scientists and managers, town planners, economists, policymakers and the general public.

Adaptations in the Animal Kingdom by Verne A. Simon Pdf

Chapter 1 Temperature Regulation in Animals There are, broadly speaking, two kinds of animals with regard to body temperature: exothermic (cold-blooded) and endothermic (warm-blooded) animals. The exothermic animals, such as reptiles, do not supply body heat by metabolic conversion of food to heat. Reptiles allow their surroundings to determine their body temperature. They lie out in the sun to warm their body. If they are too hot, they seek the shade or even burrow into the ground. At night they hide from the cold in burrows or squeeze into cracks between rocks or hide in leaf cover. Reptiles avoid the extremes of temperature. When reptiles become cool, their movements slow down, and chemical processes in their bodies, such as digestion, are inhibited. Predators, such as hawks and eagles, find it easier to prey on lizards and snakes in cooler weather. The distribution of reptiles is somewhat limited by their exothermic character. They do not thrive in cold climates1. What are the advantages and disadvantages in being exothermic? When the lizard is in a cool environment and cannot find a warmer spot, its body simply cools to the temperature of the surroundings. It is not necessary for the exothermic lizard to generate heat to increase its body temperature. This means that the lizard uses less energy and does not have to eat as much. As the lizard cools its digestion, breathing rate and heart rate slow, saving energy. A disadvantage occurs when the cool lizard is attacked by a predator. If warm, he could run fast and have a much better chance of 1 St. Patrick did not chase the snakes out of Ireland. Ireland was already completely free of snakes. St. Patrick was instrumental in converting pagans to Christianity. Since the snake was a symbol used in pagan rituals, St. Patrick was influential in ridding Ireland of the ritual use of symbolic snakes. 10 Verne A. Simon evading capture. A warm lizard being chased by a predator can move quite fast for a short distance, but like other exotherms, lacks endurance and soon tires. When the exotherm is running fast, its effort is anaerobic, that is, is not using oxygen, and lactic acid is building up in its body. It soon tires and is unable to exert itself. It must recover by taking in oxygen to rid the body of lactic acid. Another disadvantage of exothermic life is that cold climates are not available as habitat. If there is a sudden climate change, an exothermic animal wouldn't be able to mount the sustained effort needed to migrate to a better environment. The exothermic creature might simply perish. About 180 million years ago, mammals appeared. Mammals are endothermic (warm-blooded) and are able to maintain a nearly constant body temperature regardless of the temperature of their surroundings within wide limits. Their bodies will not tolerate too high or too low a temperature. If the surroundings are too hot or cold, causing the body temperature to exceed allowed limits, the animal will die. Mammals have furry coats to help them tolerate low temperatures. Sea-dwelling mammals-whales, seals, and walrus-have thick layers of blubber for insulation. Birds are endothermic and have feathers to protect them from the cold. Many types of birds and mammals survive in cold climates. Emperor penguins even live in the Antarctic, in the coldest climate on earth. Under normal circumstances, mammals and birds manage to keep this very nearly constant body temperature regardless of the temperature of their surroundings. Mammals are characterized by having body hair and suckling their young. This latter behavior gives the class its name; mammals must have mammary glands. A second advantage is that endothermic animals are not limited to activity only in daylight hours. In many locat

Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry by O Lowenstein Pdf

Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry, Volume 6, presents three papers linked by their relevance to comparative neurophysiology. The first paper on high-frequency hearing in mammals examines the sensitivity to, production, and behavioral utilization of high-frequency sound for a wide range of mammals from bats, rodents, whales, dolphins, and seals to the insectivores, primates, edentates, and carnivores. The second paper examines axonal flow and fast transport in nerves. Special attention is given to the differences in substrate and mechanism in slow and fast transport. The neuron is presented as a suitable cell type for the investigation of intracellular transport in general. The third paper on the secretory activity of neurons and related electrical activity presents a comparative assessment of all ""neurocrine"" activities, including those in the service of neuroendocrine coordination or of synaptic transmission of information. Special attention is given to the nature of vesicles containing the neurosecretions and transmitter substances and to the mechanisms of release. The electrical events accompanying such neurocrine activities are discussed.
