Death Of A Robber Baron New York City, 1891. In the spirit of Christmas, Mrs. Pamela Thompson has devoted herself to charity work, even taking an orphaned child into her Greenwich Village townhome. Ironically, her employer is none other than Henry Jennings, the infamous "Copper King" who sold bad stocks to her husband. From Robber Barons to Courtiers by Monika E. Simon Pdf

Francis Lovell is without a doubt the most famous - if not the only famous - Lovell of Titchmarsh. In 1483 he was he was made a viscount by Edward IV, the first Lovell to be raised into the titled nobility. He is most famous for being the chamberlain and close friend of Richard III, the 'dog' of William Collingbourne's famous doggerel. Though Francis Lovell is the best known member of his family, the Lovells were an old aristocratic family, tracing their roots back to eleventh-century Normandy. Aside from the Battle of Hastings, a Lovell can be found at virtually all important events in English history, whether it was the crusade of Richard I, the Battle of Lewes, the siege of Calais, the Lambert Simnel rebellion against Henry VII, or the downfall of Anne Boleyn. Over the centuries the Lovells rose in wealth and power through service to the crown, rich marriages, and, to a considerable degree, luck. The history of the Lovells of Titchmarsh, from their relatively obscure beginnings in the border region between France and Normandy to a powerful position at the royal court, not only illustrates the fate of this one family but also throws an interesting light on the changes and developments in medieval and Tudor England. Several themes emerge as constant in the lives of an aristocratic family over the five centuries covered in this book: the profit and perils of service to the crown, the influences of family tradition and personal choice, loyalty and opportunism, skill and luck, and the roles of women in the family.

Robber Baron by John Franch Pdf

"After losing his fortune and being jailed for financial improprieties in Philadelphia, Yerkes schemed his way out of prison. With his boundless ambition and entrepreneurial genius intact, he relocated to Chicago and made millions from questionable financial transactions, while at the same time forging one of the world's finest mass transit networks. Despite various philanthropic efforts, Yerkes and his methods were fiercely opposed by the press and public, and he left Chicago a bitter man. Moving to London, he organized much of the Underground, battled J. P. Morgan, and romanced Emilie Grigsby, the love of his life, before succumbing to kidney disease in 1905.".

The Lady and the Outlaw by Joyce Brandon Pdf

When a Wild West bandit takes an educated young woman hostage, the sparks that fly between them are more dangerous than bullets—“Don’t miss this one!” (Affaire de Coeur, 5 stars). A recent graduate of Wellesley College, Leslie Powers is on her way out to Arizona Territory. All she knows about the frontier comes from pulp magazines. But she’s about to get a wild education in the way of the West when Ward Cantrell, the leader of the Devil’s Canyon Gang, takes her hostage. With every reason to hate the rakishly handsome rogue, Leslie finds herself falling desperately in love with him. Ward has good reasons for preying on the Kinkaid family’s Texas and Pacific railroad—reasons that reach back to a secret, former life. He doesn’t normally let emotions get in the way of his work, but could his beautiful captive be spellbinding enough to make him forget his old grudges? “Wonderful! Bold, charming, and complete. The dialogue sparkles, the characters are truly alive and vibrant, and there is a sensitivity in the entire mood of the story . . . Don’t miss this one, it is pure joy!” —Affaire de Coeur, RWA Golden Medallion finalist

Modern Women, Modern Work by Francesca Sawaya Pdf

Focusing on literary authors, social reformers, journalists, and anthropologists, Francesca Sawaya demonstrates how women intellectuals in early twentieth-century America combined and criticized ideas from both the Victorian "cult of domesticity" and the modern "culture of professionalism" to shape new kinds of writing and new kinds of work for themselves. Sawaya challenges our long-standing histories of modern professional work by elucidating the multiple ways domestic discourse framed professional culture. Modernist views of professionalism typically told a racialized story of a historical break between the primitive, feminine, and domestic work of the Victorian past and the modern, masculine, professional expertise of the present. Modern Women, Modern Work historicizes this discourse about the primitive labor of women and racial others and demonstrates how it has been adopted uncritically in contemporary accounts of professionalism, modernism, and modernity. Seeking to recuperate black and white women's contestations of the modern professions, Sawaya pairs selected novels with a broad range of nonfiction writings to show how differing narratives about the transition to modernity authorized women's professionalism in a variety of fields. Among the figures considered are Jane Addams, Ruth Benedict, Willa Cather, Pauline Hopkins, Zora Neale Hurston, Sarah Orne Jewett, Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, and Ida Tarbell. In mapping out the constraints women faced in their writings and their work, and in tracing the slippery compromises they embraced and the brilliant adaptations they made, Modern Women, Modern Work boldly reenvisions the history of modern professionalism in the United States.

The Robber Barons by Matthew Josephson Pdf

“The best, the liveliest and most illuminating” account of Rockefeller, Morgan, and the other men who seized American economic power after the Civil War (The New Republic). John D. Rockefeller, J. P. Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, E. H. Harriman, Jay Gould, Henry Clay Frick . . . their names carry a powerful historical ring, still echoing today in the countless institutions that are part of their legacy, from universities to museums to banks. But who were the people behind the legends, and how did they rise to their positions of vast wealth and influence in the latter half of the nineteenth century? The Robber Barons is a classic work on the financiers and industrialists of the Gilded Age, who shaped their own era as well as the future of the United States—“not a mere series of biographies but a genuine history” (The New York Times Book Review).

The Outcry by Henry James Pdf

Henry James wrote a book titled The Outcry in 1911. It was once intended to be a play. His final work, The Outcry, was finished just before he passed away in 1916. The plot centers on affluent Americans purchasing priceless works of art from Britain. The widower Lord Theign intends to sell American millionaire Breckenridge Bender his exquisite painting Duchess of Waterbridge by Sir Joshua Reynolds to pay off the gambling debts of his daughter Kitty Imber. Young art critic Hugh Crimble opposes the sale, saying that Britain's priceless works of art should remain in the nation. Lady Grace, Theign's astute daughter, lends him encouragement. When word of the Reynolds' impending sale reaches the media, a patriotic uproar erupts, much to Bender's delight. Crimble, meantime, has discovered another artwork in Theign's collection that he believes to be a Mantovano rare. (James believed this artist to be a fabrication; nevertheless, it was later discovered that a little-known painter by that name actually existed.) Crimble's suspicion on the Mantovano eventually proves to be accurate. Theign decides not to sell the Reynolds to Bender and instead chooses to gift the Mantovano to the National Gallery. His friend Lady Sandgate joins forces with Theign by giving her family's Sir Thomas Lawrence artwork to the Gallery.
