Korea: The Land, People, and Customs by George Heber Jones Pdf

Excerpt from Korea: The Land, People, and Customs The necessary limits of a condensed hand-book have rendered it impossible to treat of many interesting phases of Korea and the Koreans. Two main objects have been kept steadily in mind by the author. First, to show the conditions amidst which missionaries labor, by briefly describing the land, people, customs, and religious life of the Koreans; and, second, to exhibit against this background the splendid character of the native Church. Brevity alone has prevented that full recognition of the self-sacrificing and very successful labors of my colleagues, but as far as possible mention has been made in outline of the main events attending the expansion of the work under foreign leadership. A History of Korea by Jinwung Kim Pdf

Contemporary North and South Korea are nations of radical contrasts: one a bellicose totalitarian state with a failing economy; the other a peaceful democracy with a strong economy. Yet their people share a common history that extends back more than 3,000 years. In this comprehensive new history of Korea from the prehistoric era to the present day, Jinwung Kim recounts the rich and fascinating story of the political, social, cultural, economic, and diplomatic developments in Korea's long march to the present. He provides a detailed account of the origins of the Korean people and language and the founding of the first walled-town states, along with the advanced civilization that existed in the ancient land of "Unified Silla." Clarifying the often complex history of the Three Kingdoms Period, Kim chronicles the five-century long history of the Choson dynasty, which left a deep impression on Korean culture. From the beginning, China has loomed large in the history of Korea, from the earliest times when the tribes that would eventually make up the Korean nation roamed the vast plains of Manchuria and against whom Korea would soon define itself. Japan, too, has played an important role in Korean history, particularly in the 20th century; Kim tells this story as well, including the conflicts that led to the current divided state. The first detailed overview of Korean history in nearly a quarter century, this volume will enlighten a new generation of students eager to understand this contested region of Asia.

Land and Life by Yŏng-jun Ch'oe Pdf

Interest of historical geography is not limited to the locations of historical importance or places with many historical sites. On the contrary, areas of less historic importance often emerge as places of geographical interest. In other words, from a geographical perspective, wherever human beings reside is worth studies and fieldworks. Human beings are living on the earth often oblivious to the grace in nature. It is considered natural that regional studies focus on intangibles such as history, politics and economy rather than nature or land. Regional studies revolve around specific historical events or leading persons while ignoring the life of everyday people. How our forefathers expanded agricultural lands and conducted farming, what kind of houses they built and how they established settlements were considered matters of no consequence. This point of view stems from the ruling class which lacked the interest to keep records of the lives outside their class. The lives of ordinary people, being unable to write and keep records of themselves, are hardly documented. While written historical references are deficient, vestiges of the common people's lives remain in the cultural landscape, in the minds of people and their way of living. It is not impossible to review regional characteristics based on various aspects of everyday lives of the people. This book is one such study within the Korean context.

In the Land of Kim by Fragkiska Megaloudi Pdf

The idea for this book was born while I was still in North Korea. From the very first days that I arrived, I felt that there was a truth there that needed to be told. It isn't easy to unlock the secrets of North Korea; from the moment you arrive in the country you realise that everything you know or have heard about it is pretty much worthless. I was aware of only part of the truth, and that a part which had reached me already distorted by the lens of foreign journalism and international diplomacy. If we assume that the North Koreans have no understanding of us Westerners, I can safely say that we Westerners are in the dark about the North Koreans. This book was written so that I could say what I saw and what I learnt during these two years I lived the life of an expat in Pyongyang. I wanted to give the picture of the country that I had experienced, without exaggerations and in as balanced a way as possible. What I had seen there was definitely not "staged". Two years is a long time for all that you see to be staged. I had enjoyed freedom of movement, I was able to visit rural areas, I had seen poverty and undernourished children and destroyed infrastructure. I had seen people gathering snow for drinking water, adolescents searching for food in the garbage in Pyongyang and dirty children in the rain in the provinces. Nobody had hidden these things from me. But I had seen other things as well. In those two years, I saw every day the small victories that improved life. The number of markets growing, people shopping, and children dressed in ever prettier and warmer clothes. Colour had come to North Korea. The electricity cuts had become rarer, people had more free time and, I might dare to say, more freedom, compared to what we imagine and what the case had been ten years before. Having had the rare privilege to talk to lots of North Koreans, to drink and eat with them, I had seen their small and large concerns and I discovered they weren't so different from our own.I would like to believe that when someone finishes reading this book, he or she will know a little more about the country than they did before. And the next time North Korea is in the media, the reader will be in a better position to weigh the information.
