The White List by Nina D'Aleo Pdf

Chapter 11 is watching you. Silver is an intelligence operative working for an agency that doesn't officially exist—beyond any government and above the law. Chapter 11 is the kind of place a person can join but never leave. And it keeps a third of the world's population under constant surveillance. At work. On the street. In their homes. Why? Because of Shaman syndrome. One in three people are born with Shaman syndrome, which endows them with abilities they cannot control and do not even know they have. It is Chapter 11's responsibility to cap and surveil these walts—as they are known—to ensure their talents don't turn ugly for the ordinary people around them. After Silver's partner, Dark, is seriously injured by a walt, Silver is driven to investigate. What starts as a routine investigation isn't as clear-cut as it seems, especially when she discovers there's a price on her head. Chapter 11 might be watching the world, but it can't see the division in its own ranks. Someone wants the white list—the list of every known walt that Chapter 11 has capped—but for what purpose? Silver needs to find out the secret behind Shaman syndrome, before it's too late.

Grappling with Demon Rum by James E. Klein Pdf

Social classes collide over morality and social propriety in a brand-new state Well before the Volstead (or National Prohibition) Act of 1919, Oklahoma was dry. Oklahomans banned liquor at their state’s inception in 1907 and maintained the ban even after the repeal of national prohibition. In this book, James E. Klein examines the social and cultural conflicts that led Oklahomans to outlaw liquor and discusses the economic and political consequences of the ban. Grappling with Demon Rum identifies who favored and who opposed prohibition, showing that its proponents were largely middle-class citizens who disdained public drinking establishments and who sought respectability for a young state still considered a frontier society. Klein tells how the Oklahoma Anti-Saloon League orchestrated a dry campaign to raise moral standards, reduce crime, and improve the quality of life, twice convincing voters to support prohibition. Going beyond the usual evangelical-versus-ritualist, rural-versus-urban, and ethnocultural oppositions used by other historians to explain prohibition, Klein shows that Oklahoma’s immigrant and Catholic populations were too small to account for those voting against the measure—or for the large customer base that supported bootleggers. He points instead to the large number of working-class Oklahomans who patronized saloons, whether legal or not, and focuses on class conflict in early efforts to control alcohol. He also describes the trials of enforcement officers who worked to plug leaks in statewide and later national prohibition. A cultural and social history of liquor in early Oklahoma, Grappling with Demon Rum provides a fresh look at crusaders against vice at the regional level. In portraying this conflict between middle- and working-class definitions of social propriety, Klein provides new insight into forces at work throughout America during the Progressive Era.

Trick is not to look them directly in the eyes, like ever. So, the day Wila finds herself staring into the most dangerous Draconi's pretty, emerald peepers, she knows she's royally fucked. No one said saving a bunch of kids from being served up as treats to the dragon liege was going to be easy. Now, the self-professed dark avenger must work to bring down a resistance of demons hell-bent on making life difficult for the dragon liege. And, if that wasn't bad enough, her new position comes with a partner, the dragon liege's favoured demon enforcer; a creature of fire, fury and washboard abs who-let's face it-is just gonna cramp her style. With the help of a ghostly receptionist, a talking dog and the thing that lives in the basement, Wila will be forced to take on a most dangerous task. Dead Wake by Erik Larson Pdf

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the bestselling author and master of narrative nonfiction comes the enthralling story of the sinking of the Lusitania “Both terrifying and enthralling.”—Entertainment Weekly “Thrilling, dramatic and powerful.”—NPR “Thoroughly engrossing.”—George R.R. Martin On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. But the Lusitania was one of the era’s great transatlantic “Greyhounds”—the fastest liner then in service—and her captain, William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack. Germany, however, was determined to change the rules of the game, and Walther Schwieger, the captain of Unterseeboot-20, was happy to oblige. Meanwhile, an ultra-secret British intelligence unit tracked Schwieger’s U-boat, but told no one. As U-20 and the Lusitania made their way toward Liverpool, an array of forces both grand and achingly small—hubris, a chance fog, a closely guarded secret, and more—all converged to produce one of the great disasters of history. It is a story that many of us think we know but don’t, and Erik Larson tells it thrillingly, switching between hunter and hunted while painting a larger portrait of America at the height of the Progressive Era. Full of glamour and suspense, Dead Wake brings to life a cast of evocative characters, from famed Boston bookseller Charles Lauriat to pioneering female architect Theodate Pope to President Woodrow Wilson, a man lost to grief, dreading the widening war but also captivated by the prospect of new love. Gripping and important, Dead Wake captures the sheer drama and emotional power of a disaster whose intimate details and true meaning have long been obscured by history. Demon Games by A. Witt Timothy a. Witt,Timothy A Witt Pdf

As the moments pass, Aolene begins second-guessing his incantations. Has he done something wrong? He has his doubts, right up until the moment he sees it, the bright fire that shoots out from the perimeter of the bloodstained circle, causing the wizard to turn away, hoping its great intensity will not blind him. As the flames begin to dissolve, the demon comes into focus, and the entire room brightens up in a fluorescent orange glow. This beast's eyes are generating all this light; they are like that of fire. From its mouth, foams a thick black smoke. It is the size and shape of a man, except that its skin is covered in scales, and its body is encased in something resembling dried mud. The demon's hands are webbed and long claws stretch out inches from the tips of its fingers. There are grey bat-shaped wings sprouting from its back, easily crossing the sphere-shaped markings on the floor beneath it ... the demon appears to have no teeth, but this is only until it smiles, focusing in on its captor. Aolene takes in the fear, noticing its pointed fangs. They are the only thing in this room that sparkle.
