Constantine XI Dragaš Palaeologus (1404–1453) by Marios Philippides Pdf

Constantine XI’s last moments in life, as he stood before the walls of Constantinople in 1453, have bestowed a heroic status on him. This book produces a more balanced portrait of an intriguing individual: the last emperor of Constantinople. To be sure, the last of the Greek Caesars was a fascinating figure, not so much because he was a great statesman, as he was not, and not because of his military prowess, as he was neither a notable tactician nor a soldier of exceptional merit. This monarch may have formulated grandiose plans but his hopes and ambitions were ultimately doomed, because he failed to inspire his own subjects, who did not rally to his cause. Constantine lacked the skills to create, restore, or maintain harmony in his troubled realm. In addition, he was ineffective on the diplomatic front, as he proved unable to stimulate Latin Christendom to mount an expedition and come to the aid of south-eastern Orthodox Europe. Yet in sharp contrast to his numerous shortcomings, his military defeats, and the various disappointments during his reign, posterity still fondly remembers the last Constantine.

The Sons of Constantine, AD 337-361 by Nicholas Baker-Brian,Shaun Tougher Pdf

This edited collection focuses on the Roman empire during the period from AD 337 to 361. During this period the empire was ruled by three brothers: Constantine II (337-340), Constans I (337-350) and Constantius II (337-361). These emperors tend to be cast into shadow by their famous father Constantine, the first Christian Roman emperor (306-337), and their famous cousin Julian, the last pagan Roman emperor (361-363). The traditional concentration on the historically renowned figures of Constantine and Julian is understandable but comes at a significant price: the neglect of the period between the death of Constantine and the reign of Julian and of the rulers who governed the empire in this period. The reigns of the sons of Constantine, especially that of the longest-lived Constantius II, mark a moment of great historical significance. As the heirs of Constantine they became the guardians of his legacy, and they oversaw the nature of the world in which Julian was to grow up. The thirteen contributors to this volume assess their influence on imperial, administrative, cultural, and religious facets of the empire in the fourth century.

Eusebius' Life of Constantine by Eusebius Pdf

Eusebius' Life of Constantine is the most important single record of Constantine, the emperor who turned the Roman Empire from prosecuting the Church to supporting it, with huge and lasting consequences for Europe and Christianity. The only English version previously available is based on a seventeenth-century Greek edition, but two new critical editions produced this century make a new English version necessary. The authors of this edition present the results of the recent scholarly debate, as well as their own researches so as to clarify the significance of Eusebius' work and introduce the student to the text and its interpretation, thus opening up the contentious issues. At face value much of what Eusebius wrote is false. This book shows how, once his partisan interpretations and rhetoric are properly understood, both Eusebius' text and the documents it contains give vital historical insights.

The Emperor Constantine by Michael Grant Pdf

A study of one of the ancient world's most fascinating figures. Fascinating and readable biography by a great populariser of classical civilisation. Directly responsible for momentous transformations of the Imperial scene, Constantine will always be famous as the 1st Christian Emperor of Rome, and for refounding ancient Byzantium as Constantinople - events which rank amongst the most significant in history. In art, politics, economics and particularly in religion, the life of Constantine acts as a bridge between past and present. Was he the last notable Roman Emperor, or the first medieval monarch ? Was the Great convert a saint and hero, or should we regard him as a murderer who killed his wife, his eldest son , and many of his friends to further his own ambitions? These are just some of the issues that are raised in this stimulating biography.

The Enigma of Constantine the Great by Albert Salvadó Pdf

Emperor Constantine the Great is one of the most impressive and controversial figures in world history. His decisions are a real enigma, which is masterfully unravelled in this book. His life was a series of struggles and conquests, friendships and hatreds, loves and heartbreaks, grandeur and misery, noble acts and terrible crimes, deceptions and betrayals. With the humility of a man facing his own death, he weighs it all in the balance. The last of the great emperors, he was the bastard son of Constantius Chlorus and reunified the entire Roman Empire, east and west, for the last time. He gave Christians their freedom, created the first mobile army and introduced a single currency (the Solidus, the true forerunner of the Euro). He founded Constantinople, murdered people with his own hands ... and experienced great love with Minervina, his first wife. There are great mysteries too: he was the son of St Helena but was not baptised until two days before he died; even then he found an Arian bishop to do it. He never gave up the title Pontifex Maximus, nor did he stop worshipping Mithras, the sun god. After unifying the entire empire, he had it split into four parts after his death. Delving into the life of Constantine the Great is to relive an incredible era and discover the great mystery behind his seemingly absurd and contradictory decisions. In reality, a surprising, relentless logic runs through them all, which Albert Salvado portrays with a steady hand. "The Enigma of Constantine the Great is an engaging book with aspirations to match. The book is intended for a wide range of readers who will not come away disappointed." Joan Isern. AVUI. "The Enigma of Constantine the Great is a reflection on the great questions of life and death, the value of the present, and eternity, by a person well-suited to doing so. The author holds nothing back in his portrayal of the character's dark side: his calculating mind, his loss of affection, his brutality ... There is a lot packed into this book but the skill of an accomplished author makes it easy to read." (Alvar Valls, El Periodic) Watch out for two things: one, the first edition will sell out in no time; two, it seems this eminent author will never tire of writing. What is the enigma? The enigma is resolved within the book itself. (Manel Anglada, writer, Diari d'Andorra)

Constantine by Edomilj Mijatovi Pdf

The German Emperor Frederic III. in a letter written June 1453 to Pope Nicholas V., lamenting greatly the catastrophe on the Bosphonis, calls Constantinople "The capital of the Eastern Empire," "the head of Greece, the home of arts and literature" Indeed, from the time of Constantine the Great to the time when the dawn of Eenaissance aroused Italy to her noble task, Constantinople was the capital of Christian civilization. Its place in the history of the world has been always a most remarkable one, "Rome being the only city which can succesfully bear comparison with it." When in 1453 it passed into the hands of Mohammed El-Fathi its possession consolidated at once the new Mohammedan Empire, and enabled the Sultans of the Ottoman Turks to extend their sway up to the blue Carpathians in the north-west and to the Gulf of Persia in the south-east. There seems almost a miraculous telepathic influence in that place, an influence which inspiresits occupants, as long as they possess some power, with an irresistible ambition to rule over three worlds, and which enables old and exhausted Empires to live longer than the most flattering prophecies ever thought probable or possible. There are theories which assert that the possession of Constantinople enervates, disorganizes, and in the end kills. So far as I have been able to read history, I have found that he who takes Constantinople, once securely seated on the Bosphonis, unavoidably feels that his power is strengthened for a higher task, that his political horizon has widened to the misty limits of an Universal Empire, and that it is the manifest destiny of Constantinople to be the capital, if not of an universal, then at least of a great Empire, stretching over Europe, Asia, and Africa.
