Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: February 6, 1913 A new work entitled, The Restoration of the Gospel, by Prof. Osborne J. P. Widtsoe, a.m., Principal of the Latter-day Saints' High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, has but recently issued from the Deseret News press. It was passed upon by a committee under appointment from the First Presidency, and therefore comes to the public strongly recommended. The following observation is made by Professor Widtsoe in his Foreword: The brief treatment of the Restoration of the Gospel herewith presented to the public is not intended to be in any wise a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is at most a story of the Restoration. It presumes at the outset that some thing has been restored. It relates how this something was restored. Every missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has met these two questions when he has preached abroad the Gospel of the restorati011: -what was restored? How was it restored? These two questions the follow ing chapters attempt to answer in part. It is but fair and just to say that he has handled the subject admirably. Many strong and convincing facts are skilfully woven together in chronological order, and prove beyond successful contradiction the need of a Restoration. While this is the particular and Special theme of the work, much valuable information is Contained in the chapters entitled, Sacred Writings of Old, A Sacred Book of To-day, The Gospel Brotherhood, A New and Everlasting Covenant, The Vision of Glories, In the Mouths of Witnesses, The Test of Section Sixty-seven. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: November 27, 1919 I have called this a lie because it is a demonstrably false state ment, which is repeated again and again after it has been proved to be false. Not one of the anti-mormon crusaders has ever been able to produce any evidence that at any time, in any place within the King's dominions has any Mormon apostle, elder, or mission ary ever appealed, publicly or privately, to any one of the King's subjects, male or female, to enter into polygamous relations with anyone here or in Utah. It is on the contrary admitted by the persecutors themselves that the Mormon missionaries constantly and even passionately repudiate as a baseless slander the accusation that they are propagandists of polygamy. No one has ever ventured to assert that. Even one of the Mormon missionaries in our midst is a polygamist. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: January 9, 1919 (Classic Reprint) by George F. Richards Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: January 9, 1919 I marveled. For I understood that the Savior spent about three years in His ministry among the Jews and those of the house of Israel, endeavoring to teach them the everlasting gospel and call them unto repentance; and yet, notwithstanding His mighty works and miracles and proclamation of the truth in great power and authority, there were but few who hearkened to His voice and rejoiced in His presence and received salvation at His hands. But His ministry among those who were dead was limited to the brief time intervening between the crucifixion and His resurrection; and I wondered at the words of Peter wherein he said that the Son of God preached unto the spirits in prison who sometime were dis obedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, and how it was possible for Him to preach to those spirits and perform the necessary labor among them in so short a time. And as I wondered, my eyes were opened, and my under standing quickened, and l perceived that the Lord went not in person among the wicked and the disobedient who had rejected the truth, to teach them; but behold, from among the righteous He organized His forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commissioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men. And thus was the gospel preached to the dead. And the chosen messengers went forth to declare the acceptable day of the Lord, and proclaim liberty to the captives who were bound; even unto all who would repent of their sins and receive the gospel. Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins, without a knowledge of the truth, or in transgression, having rejected the prophets. These were taught faith in God, repentance from sin, vicarious baptism for the remission of sins, the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, and all other principles of the gospel that were necessary for them to know in order to qualify themselves that they might be judged according tomen in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: May 15, 1919 Presently Valentine and Orson meet and engage in -mortal combat, Valentine with gleaming sword and polished shield, and the skill of a trained soldier, against the brutal strength of the wild man, who pulls up a young tree for a club, as his only weapon. In the fray that ensues the bear is killed, and Orson, wounded, is overcome and carried away in triumph to the King's palace. Here he is washed and dressed as a human being and made much of, but often becomes angry and wildly runs amuck. Ultimately, he is endowed with reason, weds a princess and lives happy ever after. That is the play. It is derived from a fairy story that originated in the Charlemagne period and was actually printed as early as A. D. 1495, just a few years after the first books printed from movable type. It had great popularity about the beginning of the nineteenth century in England and naturally a succeeding vogue soon after in America. That is about the time when our Three Orsons were coming into the world, and their devoted mothers were seeking heroic names for their unequalled offspring.
