The Law of Storms by H. W. Dove Pdf

Excerpt from The Law of Storms: Considered in Connection With the Ordinary Movements of the Atmosphere In this translation I have, by Professor Dove's desire, embodied in the work itself the results of observations at Dorpat (p. 125) and at Toronto (p. 129), which only appeared in the Appendix to the original work. I have also added the tables for the year 1859 at Greenwich (p. 102), for Bermuda (p. 105), and for Melbourne (p. 115), which were received from the Author in the progress of the translation. Any additions which I have made in the way of notes are signed 'Trans.' The notes signed 'F.' have been transferred, by Admiral Fitzroy's permission, from the translation of the First Edition, which is contained in the third number of ' Meteorological Papers.' The measures throughout the work have been converted to English inches, and the temperatures to their equivalents on the Fahrenheit scale. The quotations from all the works which were accessible to me in the libraries of Dublin have been taken from the originals. Victorian Science and Imagery by Nancy Rose Marshall Pdf

The nineteenth century was a period of science and imagery: when scientific theories and discoveries challenged longstanding boundaries between animal, plant, and human, and when art and visual culture produced new notions about the place of the human in the natural world. Just as scientists relied on graphic representation to conceptualize their ideas, artists moved seamlessly between scientific debate and creative expression to support or contradict popular scientific theories—such as Darwin’s theory of evolution and sexual selection—deliberately drawing on concepts in ways that allowed them to refute popular claims or disrupt conventional knowledges. Focusing on the close kinship between the arts and sciences during the Victorian period, the art historians contributing to this volume reveal the unique ways in which nineteenth-century British and American visual culture participated in making science, and in which science informed art at a crucial moment in the history of the development of the modern world. Together, they explore topics in geology, meteorology, medicine, anatomy, evolution, and zoology, as well as a range of media from photography to oil painting. They remind us that science and art are not tightly compartmentalized, separate influences. Rather, these are fields that share forms, manifest as waves, layers, lines, or geometries; that invest in the idea of the evolution of form; and that generate surprisingly kindred responses, such as pain, pleasure, empathy, and sympathy.

Politics, Statistics and Weather Forecasting, 1840-1910 by Aitor Anduaga Pdf

Weather forecasting is the most visible branch of meteorology and has its modern roots in the nineteenth century when scientists redefined meteorology in the way weather forecasts were made, developing maps of isobars, or lines of equal atmospheric pressure, as the main forecasting tool. This book is the history of how weather forecasting was moulded and modelled by the processes of nation-state building and statistics in the Western world.

Storms Floods and Sunshine by Isaac Monroe Cline Pdf

More than six thousand souls perished in the September 8, 1900, hurricane that devastated the island town of Galveston, Texas. Men and women, rich and poor, black and white struggled alike in what was to that date the worst natural disaster in American history. Many more would have lost their lives, however, if it wasn't for the efforts of Dr. Issac Monroe Cline, section director at the Weather Bureau Headquarters. It was Cline who decided to raise the flags over the Weather Bureau, signaling an impending hurricane. He also spoke to large crowds of people in low-lying areas of the island, correctly predicting the unexpected force and direction of the storm. This detailed autobiography, originally penned by Cline in 1945, chronicles his life and education before and after the deadly events at Galveston. It is a complete picture of him not just as a weather forecaster, but also as a small boy, a student, a survivor, and a meteorological scholar. It is supplemented with antique photographs and information from his textbook Characteristics of Tropical Cyclones. More than one hundred years after the hurricane that would forever mark his career, Cline is still revered as a pioneer in his field. His work charting hurricanes, measuring their direction, speed, and precipitation, helped build the foundations for modern meteorology. Storms, Floods and Sunshine preserves the science and emotion behind the man the Associated Press called "the smiling, genial, climatological genius."
