Karima V. Bushnell Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2015 I thoroughly enjoyed this book and admire it as well. The fictional Indian tribes have an authentic ring in two different ways: First, their cultures' practices and values make sense and hang together just as those of real cultures do, and I speak as an MA in Intercultural Relations and former college instructor in this field. Even better, at least one of the tribes holds and communicates the life-affirming, respectful, earth-centered values that make the traditional Native American worldview so beautiful and admirable. The characters are good, the story is interesting and sweeps the reader along, and the hero (who is something of a blockhead at times) is well worth rooting for as we follow his journey toward awakening. The mystical experiences feel authentic as well. This interesting and easy-flowing work of fiction reflects the real experiences and visions common to spiritual seekers across world religions. In short, it's my very favorite kind of book: It entertains, instructs and uplifts you all at once. Good work, Mr. Barnes! Bill has hit it out of the park with this wonderful spiritual fantasy. Bill weaves the emotional ups and downs of Running Brook and pulled me into the adventure within a few pages, I didn't want the adventure to end. The book is filled with life lessons that I find can be applied to everyday life. Bills dynamic writing left it open for a sequel. Barnes is able to craft a well rounded story with relatable characters and situations. Running Brook is the hero of our novel and is forced to go through many trials and tribulations through out his journey. William C. Barnes has well rounded characters in the story and they are human with flaws and feelings. That makes for much more believable characters. I've enjoyed reading his book and hope that he comes out with more soon.
Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society. An unseen Watcher lives in the land of the Kepke. He resides in the inner forest -- the Forest of Thought and Creation. He was sent by the Great Everywhere Father to observe and judge the Kepke people. Every Kepke man is warned not to venture too far away from the outer forest, for he might come upon the Watcher and die a terrible fearful death. Yet someday there will be a Kepke man who will possess great medicine. He will venture into the inner forest. The Watcher will seek him out and the lives of the Kepke will be changed forever. But the legends never say exactly HOW this will happen, or what the change will be. To find the answer, Running Brook must leave the land of the Kepke on a quest that will take him into the mystical Forest and deep within himself. (A spiritual fantasy tale by William C. Barnes with Yonassan Gershom.)
Read, Listen, Tell by Sophie McCall,Deanna Reder,David Gaertner,Gabrielle L'Hirondelle Hill Pdf
“Don’t say in the years to come that you would have lived your life differently if only you had heard this story. You’ve heard it now.” —Thomas King, in this volume Read, Listen, Tell brings together an extraordinary range of Indigenous stories from across Turtle Island (North America). From short fiction to as-told-to narratives, from illustrated stories to personal essays, these stories celebrate the strength of heritage and the liveliness of innovation. Ranging in tone from humorous to defiant to triumphant, the stories explore core concepts in Indigenous literary expression, such as the relations between land, language, and community, the variety of narrative forms, and the continuities between oral and written forms of expression. Rich in insight and bold in execution, the stories proclaim the diversity, vitality, and depth of Indigenous writing. Building on two decades of scholarly work to centre Indigenous knowledges and perspectives, the book transforms literary method while respecting and honouring Indigenous histories and peoples of these lands. It includes stories by acclaimed writers like Thomas King, Sherman Alexie, Paula Gunn Allen, and Eden Robinson, a new generation of emergent writers, and writers and storytellers who have often been excluded from the canon, such as French- and Spanish-language Indigenous authors, Indigenous authors from Mexico, Chicana/o authors, Indigenous-language authors, works in translation, and “lost“ or underappreciated texts. In a place and time when Indigenous people often have to contend with representations that marginalize or devalue their intellectual and cultural heritage, this collection is a testament to Indigenous resilience and creativity. It shows that the ways in which we read, listen, and tell play key roles in how we establish relationships with one another, and how we might share knowledges across cultures, languages, and social spaces.

Giants in the Earth: A Saga of the Prairie by O. E. Rölvaag Pdf
"Giants in the Earth" is a novel by Norwegian-American author Ole Edvard Rølvaag, telling a story of a Norwegian family who struggles to make a new life as pioneers in the Dakota territory. The novel follows the grim realities of pioneering and the gloomy fatalism of the Norse mind among the depictions of snow storms, locusts, poverty, hunger, loneliness, homesickness, the difficulty of fitting into a new culture, and the estrangement of immigrant children who grow up in a new land.
Is it possible that people living today died in the Holocaust? Rabbi Yonassan Gershom presents compelling evidence that supports this seemingly impossible phenomenon. Based on the stories of people he counselled, the author sheds new light on the subject of reincarnation and the divinity of the human soul. In addition to the fascinating case histories, Rabbi Gershom includes information on Jewish teachings regarding the afterlife, karmic healing, and prophecies. Available November, 1992. (A.R.E. Press)

A Native American Theology by Kidwell, Clara Sue ,Noley, Homer,Tinker, George E. "Tink" Pdf
This collaborative work represents a pathbreaking exercise in Native American theology. While observing traditional categories of Christian systematic theology (Creation, Deity, Christology, etc.), each of these is reimagined consistent with Native experience, values, and worldview. At the same time the authors introduce new categories from Native thought-worlds, such as the Trickster (eraser of boundaries, symbol of ambiguity), and Land. Finally, the authors address issues facing Native Americans today, including racism, poverty, stereotyping, cultural appropriation, and religious freedom--From publisher's description.
