The Life of Henry George (Classic Reprint) by Henry George Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of Henry George For it is not for knowledge to enlighten a soul that is dark of itself; nor to make a blind man to see. Her business is not to find a man eyes, but to guide, govern and direct his steps, provided he have sound feet, and straight legs to go upon. Knowledge is an excellent drug, but no drug has virtue enough to preserve itself from corruption and decay, if the vessel be minted and impure wherein it is put to keep. Henry George and His Gospel (Classic Reprint) by Digby Cotes Pedder Pdf

Excerpt from Henry George and His Gospel Henry George was still in the force and vigour of political manhood; but from this time forward we see that per petual strain has already sapped his strength. The Night, In ever-nearing circle, ' was already weaving her shade around his head. This was 1890. He had seven years more to live, and he crowded them with work. Death was much in his thoughts, but not in the Character of a threatening spectre. Many calm utterances that show the spirit with which he awaited the summons are recorded by his friends. But they are all summed up in one sen tence of a letter to his wife Let us love the closer while life lasts. The Life of Henry George by Henry George Pdf

Economist HENRY GEORGE (1839-1897) was, at the height of his popularity in the 1880s and 1890s, considered the third most famous American, behind Mark Twain and Thomas Edison, and his liberal philosophies on taxation, copyrights, poverty issues, and more continue to influence progressive movements today. This loving and inspiring biography, written by his son just after his father's death and published in 1900, draws on letters, journals, and other firsthand material, tells the tale of a boy sailor, apprentice printer, and would-be gold miner who transformed the world of work and hardship he saw around him into a new way of thinking about mankind's usage of the planet's wealth and stewardship of its own inner resources. This is an essential work for understanding and appreciating how one of the most significant thinkers in American history developed his values and beliefs through uniquely American experiences.

The True Basis of Economics by David Starr Jordan Pdf

Excerpt from The True Basis of Economics: Or the Law of Independent and Collective Human Life; Being a Correspondence on the Merits of the Doctrine of Henry George This correspondence ensued on my request to Dr. David Starr Jordan, the President of Stanford University, that he would give me his opinion and comments on Henry George's letter to the Pope on the condition of labor. It may be remembered that when the Rev. Dr. McGlynn, of New York, became a convert to the Single Tax, he was silenced by order of the Pope, and eventually excommunicated for contempt of his authority. The Pope then addressed an encyclical letter to his clergy, setting forth the principles involved in the labor problem as he saw them. To this Henry George replied in an open letter which was placed in the hands of the Pope himself. His Holiness apparently perceived that injustice had been done, and he ordered the reopening of Dr. McGlynn's case, with the result that he was restored to his duties in New York, the order of silence was withdrawn, and he was fully restored to the bosom of the Church. The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp by William Henry Davies Pdf

What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?' (LEISURE BY W.H. DAVIES) Loneliness and criminality determined William Henry Davies’ childhood and teenage-years. At the age of 22 he decided to leave Wales for America to chance his luck abroad. But getting there was not as easy as expected. At that point in time, he became a tramp. In his best-known work THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A SUPER-TRAMP, Davies tells the story of his lifetime. He explains in a very intimate and touching way what it is like to grow up in Great Britain at the end of the 19th century. Furthermore, he describes how he felt during his vagabond life and what made him settle back in the UK. After all, Davies develops into the most popular poet of his time.

The Essence of Progress and Poverty by Henry George Pdf

In this concise text, the distinguished American philosopher John Dewey compiled excerpts from the massive Progress and Poverty to provide those unfamiliar with Henry George's work with the essence of the author's thinking on economics. In his Foreword, Dewey noted, "It would require less than the fingers of the two hands to enumerate those who from Plato down rank with [George]. No man, no graduate of a higher educational institution, has a right to regard himself as an educated man in social thought unless he has some first-hand acquaintance with the theoretical contribution of this great American thinker." Fifteen brief chapters feature passages from George's highly influential book and examine why poverty persists throughout periods of economic and technological progress as well as the basis for economic cycles of boom and bust.
