Excerpt from The Monthly Religious Magazine, Vol. 23: And Independent Journal The season drives us within doors, and presses upon us the question, What is our age making of Home Will the readers of the Monthly spend a few moments with me in looking at the New England homes of our day, their condition and prospects, the disabilities which press upon them, the agencies which may be employed to adorn and build them up, the influences which may even make them at least shadowy types of heavenly homes, - at least the outer courts of bright and peaceful mansions in the House not made with hands? Excerpt from The Monthly Religious Magazine, Vol. 17: And Independent Journal There were not ten When Lot came to rally his forces, he found himself, his wife, his two daughters, and their two husbands. Here are but six, all told! And the two young men will not hear to him; they turn away. And the four flee. And his wife is faithless, and turns back and he and his own blood are all who are saved from Sodom! That is what did happen. But let us see what might have happened. From to-day's experience let us find some thing, first, of what those ten men would have done, and then of what they would have been, for Sodom. Ten men who believed in God! Ten men who loved God! Ten men who only loved themselves because God's children who could serve God. They have such power! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Monthly Religious Magazine and Independent Journal, 1859, Vol. 21 (Classic Reprint) by E. H. Sears Pdf

Excerpt from The Monthly Religious Magazine and Independent Journal, 1859, Vol. 21 It requires but a slight survey of the religious world to observe two very distinctly marked tendencies among the friends of human progress. One pertains to those who ex pect a normal development of humanity, such as shall leave Christ and his Word away back in the past as having accomplished their work; who think these were the natural products of human nature, and only show its possibilities; and who expect new Messiahs in the man of the future, and new Scriptures as his voice of inspiration. The other tendency is of those who look to Jesus Christ as the Divine Sun and Centre, and his Word as infinite and inexhaustible, and believe that all hope of the progress of humanity is through him as its Redeemer, Regenerator, and Cleanser. These two tendencies, we think, are to become more strong and divergent, and work out each its own separate results. We hardly need say that our position is with the latter. We believe that from the Christ and his all-revealing Word the power is to come, and is coming now, which will be felt in the Christian consciousness as never before, - a power from which the soul will melt down into a more humble recep tivity of the Divine Life, and in whose revealings will be the Absolute Theology before which human creeds and philoso phies will pale away. And we shall think we have suc ceeded in the object we place before us, so far as we may be the means of bringing others into more near and tender relations with a personal Saviour. We shall not aim at uniform solemnity, but give our selves room for any by-play of fancy we may feel impelled to, always keeping our ruling purpose in view. Several writers of known ability have pledged themselves to aid us by their contributions and, bespeaking the candor and good will of the readers of the Magazine, we enter on our work in the full hope of the Divine blessing upon our endeavors. The Monthly Religious Magazine and Independent Journal, Vol. 24 by E. H. Sears Pdf

Excerpt from The Monthly Religious Magazine and Independent Journal, Vol. 24: July December, 1860 Even our busy, thrifty modern world finds time to repro duce the Old books Of devotion, besides giving us occasionally a new one which is earnestly welcomed by all who would be rich towards God. For the most part, the Old are better than the new; indeed, it is no disparagement even of a book so precious as The Still Hour to say, that the Old are al ways better, for in our times it is the left hand that writes the Meditations and Prayers, whilst the right hand holds the microscope, or the geologist's hammer, or perhaps unwinds the telegraphic wire which is to girdle the solid earth. We gladly recognize a favorable sign Of our religious times in the appearance during the last month Of a new American edition Of the Confessions Of St. Augustine. This is a fresh indi cation Of the want which has called forth such books as the Theolog-ia Germanica, the Lyra. Catholics and Germanica. Hans Christian Andersen in American Literary Criticism of the Nineteenth Century by Herbert Rowland Pdf

In Hans Christian Andersen in American Literary Criticism of the Nineteenth Century, Herbert Rowland argues that the literary criticism accompanying the publication of Hans Christian Andersen’s works in the United States compares favorably in scope, perceptiveness, and chronological coverage with the few other national receptions of Andersen outside of Denmark. Rowland contends that American commentators made it abundantly evident that, in addition to his fairy tales, Andersen wrote several novels, travelogues, and an autobiography which were all of more than common interest. In the process, Rowland shows that American commentators “naturalized” Andersen in the United States by confronting the sensationalism in the journalism and literature of the time with the perceived wholesomeness of Andersen’s writing, deploying his long fiction on both sides of the debate over the nature and relative value of the romance and the novel, and drawing on three of his works to support their positions on slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
