The Natural Number Primer (Classic Reprint) by David Gibbs Pdf

Excerpt from The Natural Number Primer IT is the purpose of this book to present the elementary ideas of number in the simplest form and language possible. It is a book for the use of the child in his first year in school, supplementing the work of the teacher. The first step in the learning of number consists in giving to a group of objects a number-name by counting. Counting has little value except that it makes possible the definite comparison of groups of objects or of units of measure. The ordinary child, on entering school, is able to make an indefinite comparison of groups of objects and also, to some extent, to count. First Days in Number by Della Vanamburgh Pdf

Excerpt from First Days in Number: A Primer of Arithmetic There is no broader field for the free development of the child mind than is to be found in number work. The child needs only to be invited and he will discover many facts concerning his home, birds, animals, owers, fruits, and forms; in short, he will discover the world in which he lives. It is the purpose of this book to emphasize the discoveries the pupil makes in his explorations in the world of number, and to furnish help and means by which he may express these facts to others and record them for himself. It is sincerely desired that the teacher who may use this book will not present the work as a basis for the number lesson. Each page should be made the result of investigation and original research, in which the pupil is led to discover the facts he finds expressed upon the page. The Easy Primer (Classic Reprint) by Geoffrey Buckwalter Pdf

Excerpt from The Easy Primer No one but a teacher of little children can possibly be aware of the number of times they must see words, and read and write and spell them, before they are able to recognize them at a glance, before they can read them, especially in new connections. Learning to read is a complex process, and the complexity has given rise to many so-called Methods. To teach reading well the skillful teacher will use the best parts of all good methods, and will blindly follow none. Walking and talking are also complex pro cesses, and yet babies learn to walk and to talk with very little or no help. Under right conditions the child should begin to read almost as naturally and unconsciously as it begins to talk. Under favorable conditions some children learn to read without any teaching. At the start the mechanics of reading, although important, should not be so obtruded upon the beginner as to hide from him the purpose of learning to read. Ideally, the education of the child is natural, unforced, and unhindered development. We should in cite, indirectly, and maintain his interest; we should, without attempting many things at a time, carry the child along as fast as he should go, but no faster. And we should keep in mind that the great factor in the child's education is not method, nor teaching, nor environment, but an innate faculty that makes for develop ment. The Natural Method Readers by Hannah T. McManus Pdf

Excerpt from The Natural Method Readers: A Second Reader The mechanics of reading are not in evidence There is little or nothing to suggest that words have been strung together merely as school exercises. The progressive dificulties are well hidden from view, while being easily surmountable if the lessons are followed consecutively.
