The Naturalist on the River Amazon by Henry Walter Bates Pdf

First published in 1863, this is a first-hand account of Henry Walter Bates' eleven-year expedition to the river Amazon in 1848, during which he discovered some eight thousand species unknown to the natural sciences. Written in the first person, it records the astonishing range of natural life in the regions traversed by the Amazon and its tributaries. Describing his adventures south of the equator, Bates takes the reader through Par, Tocantins, Camet, Maraj, Carip, Obydos, Manos, Santarem, Tapajos, and Ega, descriptively cataloguing the rich vegetation, aboriginal population, and wondrous birds, animals and insects of these regions. More than just a scientist's log, the work that took Bates three years to complete was considered by Darwin to be 'the best work of natural history travels ever published in England.' This third edition of the book (1873) also contains numerous illustrations by the noted zoologist Joseph Wolf.

The Naturalist on the River Amazons by Walter Henry Bates Pdf

A Stanfords Travel Classic - Henry Walter Bates and his co-naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace embarked together in 1848 on an expedition to the forests of the Amazon in search of plants and animals that would help solve the problem of the origin of species. Wallace returned to England in 1852, but tragically lost his entire collection in a shipwreck, while Bates stayed on for seven more years, accumulating more than 14,000 specimens, of which a staggering 8,000 were previously unknown to science. The Naturalist on the River Amazons was published in 1863 and catalogues a wondrous range of natural life in vivid description and detail. But Bates' book is much more than a scientist's log. His remarkable dedication to the challenges of exploration, and his deep appreciation of the beauty and rhythms of the world of river and rainforest, both shine through in his writing. Although he finally confessed that the contemplation of Nature alone is not sufficient to fill the human heart, his record of the time he passed in the Garden of Eden offers timely inspiration to our own age in its battle to preserve the planet's environments.

The Naturalist on the River Amazons by Henry Walter Bates Pdf

Henry Walter Bates was an English naturalist and explorer who gave the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. He was most famous for his expedition to the rainforests of the Amazon with Alfred Russel Wallace, which took place between 1848 and 1852. Upon returning home eleven years after his departure, Bates wrote down his findings. The Naturalist on the River Amazons, published in two volumes, has become his best-known work. The second volume focuses on the events and discoveries which had taken place between their stay at Santarem and their final departure for England.

The Naturalist on the River Amazons, Volume Two by Henry Walter Bates Pdf

Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) was a British naturalist and explorer with a keen interest in entomology. In fact, his interest in insects was so encompassing that in 1844 Bates inspired equal enthusiasm in his new colleague and friend, Alfred Russel Wallace. Four years later, Bates and Wallace embarked on an extended expedition to South America to explore and collect insect specimens for museums and private collectors back in England. The two naturalists traveled the Amazon rainforest together for about two years, and then struck off to different regions to pursue their own interests. Bates remained in South America longer than Wallace - a full 11 years - before returning to England in 1859. Back home, Bates reflected on his insect collections, and developed the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. Mimicry has since become a standard paradigm in biological thought, and concrete evidence for the theory of evolution by natural selection. Not surprisingly, it was Charles Darwin, himself, who encouraged Bates to publish "The Naturalist on the River Amazons." The sumptuous depictions of his travels in South America provide an intriguing insight into both the perspective and aspirations of this man and his time. "The Naturalist on the River Amazons" was originally published as two volumes in 1863; however, only one year later, Bates published a much abridged second edition in a single volume that, unfortunately, has become the standard version in today's marketplace. Now, Briar Bird Press is offering a return to the original two volume set. Volume 2 of "The Naturalist on the River Amazons" is the fourth entry in the Foundations in Biological Thought series; volume I is available as Foundations in Biological Thought, no. 3. The series presents the pivotal works of 19th century naturalists remastered for modern readers. Meticulously edited, these volumes preserve the author's intent in design and content, including the manuscript's original annotations and amendments. In addition, revised page references and editor's notes are included throughout to retain the utility of the works for both study and reference.

The Naturalist on the River Amazons Volume 1 by Henry Bates Pdf

The Naturalist on the River Amazons Volume 1 By Henry Bates One of the most interesting excursions made by Mr. Bates from Para was the ascent of the river Tocantins--the mouth of which lies about 4-5 miles from the city of Para. This was twice attempted. On the second occasion--our author being in company with Mr. Wallace--the travellers penetrated as far as the rapids of Arroyos, about 130 miles from its mouth. This district is one of the chief collecting-grounds of the well-known Brazil-nut (Bertholletia excelsa), which is here very plentiful, grove after grove of these splendid trees being visible, towering above their fellows, with the "woody fruits, large and round as cannon-balls, dotted over the branches."
