The Nature and Behavior of Grain Boundaries by Hsun Hu Pdf

In view of the dramatically increased interest in the study of grain boundaries during the past few years, the Physical Metal lurgy Committee of The Institute of Metals Division of The Metal lurgical Society, AIME, sponsored a four-session symposium on the NATURE AND BEHAVIOR OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES, at the TMS-AIME Fall Meeting in Detroit, Michigan, October 18-19, 1971. The main ob jectives of this symposium were to examine the more recent develop ments, theoretical and experimental, in our understanding of grain boundaries, and to stimulate further studies in these and related areas. This volume contains most of the papers presented at the Symposium. It is regrettable that space limitations allow the inclusion of only four of the unsolicited papers, in addition to thirteen invited papers. The papers are grouped into three sections according to their major content: STRUCTURE OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES, ENERGETICS OF GRAIN BOUNDARIES, and GRAIN BOUNDARY MOTION AND RELATED PHENOMENA. Grain boundaries, or crystal interfaces, have been of both academic and practical interest for many years. An early seminar on "Metal Interfaces" was documented in 1952 by ASM. The Fourth Metallurgical Colloquium held in France, 1960, had a broad coverage on "Properties of Grain Boundaries". More recently the Australian Institute of Metals sponsored a conference on interfaces, with the proceedings being published by Butterworths in 1969.

Silicon-Based Structural Ceramics for the New Millennium by Manuel E. Brito,Hua-Tay Lin,Kevin Plucknett Pdf

This volume focuses on recent scientific and technological developments in silicon-based (i.e., silicon nitride, SiAlONs, silicon carbide, silicon oxynitride) structural ceramics. Authors from academia and industry assess the current state of the art in slilicon-based structual ceramics. Industrial case studies are advocated to highlight the development and application of these materials in real engineering environments. Proceedings of the symposium held at the 104th Annual Meeting of The American Ceramic Society, April 28-May1, 2002 in Missouri; Ceramic Transactions, Volume 142.

Grain Boundaries and Crystalline Plasticity by Louisette Priester Pdf

This book explores the fundamental role of grain boundaries in the plasticity of crystalline materials, providing a multi-scale approach to plasticity to facilitate understanding. It starts with the atomic description of a grain boundary, moves on to the elemental interaction processes between dislocations and grain boundaries, and finally shows how the microscopic phenomena influence the macroscopic behaviors and constitutive laws. Drawing on topics from physical, chemical, and mechanical disciplines, this work also explains properties of deformation at low and high temperature, creep, fatigue, and rupture.

Ultrafine-Grain Ceramics by John Burke Pdf

The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Saga more Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgi cal Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a sub ject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific community. Grain size and its control is a major factor governing the behavior of materi als. Knowledge that one can obtain grain sizes in the 10 micron down to sub micron range has established the basis for a new technology. This volume, Ultrafine-Grain Ceramics, addresses itself to the broad areas of: realization of fine-grain ceramics; preparation of ultrafine particle size materials; characterization of ultrafine particles and ultrafine-grain ceramics; processing and behavior of ultra fine-grain ceramics. The technical advice provided by Dr. S. K. Dutta of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center during the editing of this book is acknowledged. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Scala, Director, Lt. Col. Joseph B. Mason, Commanding Officer, and J. F. Sullivan, Deputy Technical Director, of the Army Materials and Mechanics Re search Center is appreciated.
