Gideon Hirtenstein began his professional career 50 years ago and is a 1969 graduate of the European Train Culinary School. He has been an Executive Chef since 1974, serving as the Executive Chef for four- and fi ve-star luxury hotels in over 47 countries throughout his diverse career. Gidi served 3 years in the Israeli army after graduating culinary school. He has traveled around the world during his career seeing 47 countries. During his time working he created a replica cake of the fi rst ship to sail from the suez channel from Israel for the Welcoming Party. He is certifi ed by the American Culinary Institute, 1985. Gidi worked as the executive chef for the College of William and Mary and he was the corporate chef for Shamrock services/merged with GSI. Indian indigenous societies are especially known for their elaborate rituals, which offer an excellent chance for studying religion as practice. However, few detailed ethnographic works exist on the ritual practices of these societies. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Jharkhand, India this book offers insights into contemporary, previously not described rituals of the Santal, one of the largest indigenous societies of Central India. Its focus lies on culturally specific notions of place as articulated and created during these rituals. In three chapters the book discusses how the Santal "make place" on different local, regional and global levels through their rituals: They reaffirm their ancestral roots in their land during large sacrificial rituals. They offer sacrifices to the dangerous deities of the forest in exchange for rain. And they claim their region to be a "Santal region" through large festivals celebrated in sacred groves, which they link to national and global discourses of indigeneity and environmentalism. In 73 A.D., legend has it, 960 Jewish rebels under siege in the ancient desert fortress of Masada committed suicide rather than surrender to a Roman legion. Recorded in only one historical source, the story of Masada was obscure for centuries. In The Masada Myth, Israeli sociologist Nachman Ben-Yehuda tracks the process by which Masada became an ideological symbol for the State of Israel, the dramatic subject of movies and miniseries, a shrine venerated by generations of Zionists and Israeli soldiers, and the most profitable tourist attraction in modern Israel. Ben-Yehuda describes how, after nearly 1800 years, the long, complex, and unsubstantiated narrative of Josephus Flavius was edited and augmented in the twentieth century to form a simple and powerful myth of heroism. Among the millions of Jews who immigrated to America in the early twentieth century, there were the few for whom Hebrew culture was an important ideal. Reaching a critical mass around World War I, these American Hebraists attempted to establish a vital Hebrew culture in America. They founded journals and wrote Hebrew poetry, fiction, and essays, largely about the American Jewish experience, and they succeeded in putting a Hebraist stamp upon most of the Jewish education that took place between the two world wars. Hebrew in America is the first book to fully explore the Jewish attachment to Hebrew in twentieth-century North America. Fifteen leading scholars in Judaic studies write about the legacy of American Hebraism and the claims it continues to make upon the soul of the American Jewish community.
