With Stars in Their Eyes by Jim Bernard Breckinridge,Alec M. Pridgeon Pdf

"Aden B. Meinel and wife Marjorie P. Meinel stood at the confluence of several overarching technological developments of the 20th century: postwar aerial surveillance by spy planes and satellites, solar energy, the evolution of telescope design, interdisciplinary optics, and photonics. In 1945 he was a Navy Ensign ordered to find the secret tunnels in Nazi Germany where the V-2 rockets menacing Great Britain and Belgium were being manufactured. After receiving both his B.A. degree and Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California at Berkeley within three years, Aden was invited to join the scientific staff at Yerkes Observatory/University of Chicago. While there he was selected by the National Science Foundation to manage the development of a new national observatory on Kitt Peak, Arizona, and served as its first Director. In the early 1960s he founded the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona, which later metamorphosed into the College of Optical Sciences with the doctoral program in interdisciplinary optics. It was here that he also designed the first Multiple Mirror Telescope and with wife Marjorie pioneered the feasibility of solar energy power on a commercial scale. Aden's knowledge and expertise in optics made him invaluable in research on cameras for spy satellites and spy planes overflying the Soviet Union and Southeast Asia. After retirement the Meinels worked for NASA/JPL on the precursor of the James Webb Space Telescope and on the exoplanet program. They also served on the team that corrected spherical aberration in the Hubble Space Telescope"--

The CIA and the U-2 Program 1954-1974 by Gregory W. Pedlow,Donald E. Welzenbach Pdf

A comprehensive & authoritative history of the CIA's manned overhead reconnaissance program (MORP), which from 1954 to 1974 developed & operated 2 extraordinary aircraft, the U-2 & the A-12 OXCART. Describes not only the program's technological & bureaucratic aspects, but also its political & international context. The MORP, along with other overhead systems that emerged from it, changed the CIA's work & structure in ways that were both revolutionary & permanent. The formation of the Directorate of S&T in the 1960s, principally to develop & direct reconnaissance programs, is the most obvious legacy of the events in this study.

The History of Customs in Qin and Han Dynasty by Li Shi Pdf

The book is the volume of “The History of Customs in Qin and Han Dynasty” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.

The Nine Pillars of History by Gunnar G. Sevelius, M.D. Pdf

Human society, as we know it, goes back some 200,000 years to a time when we learned to speak and communicate our thoughts. The “Nine Pillars of History” are defined from nine basic requirements for a healthy and prosperous society during the following 190,000 years of Hunting and Gathering. Sexuality, a fundamental human need that goes even further back in history than society, had to be mitigated with a social rule: The Golden Rule. The “Nine Pillars of History” are used as non-political common denominators to judge the political evolution of some thirty major countries or cultures. In addition, the Pillars are partnered with the Golden Rule to explore five world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The relevance of The Nine Pillars of History is proven by the fact that they exist intergraded across multiple societies since the dawn of time and are still relevant for our modern world. This historical review reveals that dogmatic religions and harsh politics have caused 10,000 years of war by challenging the relevance of “The Nine Pillars of History”. Dr. Sevelius gives his views as nonpolitical, nonreligious thoughts. Each paragraph has been numbered to offer an easy to use reference system for community discussion of specific statements. “The Nine Pillars of History” gives you, Dear Friend and Reader, a vision for peace. As Dr. Sevelius respectfully borrows President Lincoln’s enduring truth, “that governments of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth”.

The Wizards Of Langley by Jeffrey T. Richelson Pdf

In this, the first full-length study of the Directorate of Science and Technology, Jeffrey T. Richelson walks us down the corridors of CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and through the four decades of science, scientists, and managers that produced the CIA we have today. He tells a story of amazing technological innovation in service of intelligence gathering, of bitter bureaucratic infighting, and sometimes, as in the case of its "mind-control" adventure, of stunning moral failure. Based on original interviews and extensive archival research, The Wizards of Langley turns a piercing lamp on many of the agency's activities, many never before made public.

Cambodia Now by Karen J. Coates Pdf

Cambodia has never recovered from its Khmer Rouge past. The genocidal regime of 1975–1979 and the following two decades of civil war ripped the country apart. This work examines Cambodia in the aftermath, focusing on Khmer people of all walks of life and examining through their eyes key facets of Cambodian society, including the ancient Angkor legacy, relations with neighboring countries (particularly the strained ones with the Vietnamese), emerging democracy, psychology, violence, health, family, poverty, the environment, and the nation’s future. Along with print sources, research is drawn from hundreds of interviews with Cambodians, including farmers, royalty, beggars, teachers, monks, orphanage heads, politicians, and non-native experts on Cambodia. Dozens of exquisite photographs of Cambodian people and places illustrate the work, which concludes with a glossary of Cambodian words, people, places and names, and an appendix of organizations providing aid to Cambodia.

The Infantry Adventures of Sgt William G. Altenhofen by SGT William G. Altenhofen Pdf

When I was assigned an infantry MOS, in spite of having a profile, I first thought about what the Psychiatryst had told me. He said I lost my temper very fast and it was uncontrolable. My first reaction was to get very angry, my mind seemed to blow up, I wanted to scream at him that he was wrong. Than I realized that was just what he had just told me. So I always worried that I would get into a situation where I would need all my facilities about me, and I would loose it and cause one or more people to get injured because I was not thinking properly. I found it easy to operate in the infantry. The operating manuals were written so they were easy to understand. I passed all the schools I had to attend, and I was considered very efficient. However, I was not the loud, screaming bully that was typical of the Infantry Sergeant. I was often critized because I did not scream at the troops. I found that if you talked to them using good english I got more done. So I did not use curse words, or degrade people in any manner. I learned when I went to my first Infantry unit, that if I told them I had a profile, and that I could type, I would be put in a dead end job that earned no rewards, so I would just be marking time. I could not operate that way. As soon as I could I got rid of the profile. I got a few breaks, and considered myself very lucky to accomplish as much as I did in the Army. I wrote mostly about myself, but I did include bits about people who I considered outstanding, good or bad. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed living it. SFC (Ret) William G.
