As You Like It by William Shakespeare Pdf

'We that are true lovers run into strange capers.' Four centuries after its publication in the Folio, As You Like It's capacity to entertain and instruct remains evergreen. This edition provides a friendly yet authoritative introduction to the play, upholding it as a crowning expression of the Elizabethan Renaissance while underscoring its appeal to twenty-first century readers as Shakespeare's most intrepid exploration of gender, sexuality, and the environment. Its double-cross-dressed heroine dominates the plot (and their love interest Orlando) to conduct a masterclass in gender fluidity. The melancholic Jaques unmasks the fundamental theatricality of existence and questions humanity's prerogative to displace and harm other species. Through the clown Touchstone, the comedy tests the possibility that we might laugh ourselves wise, especially when we learn to laugh at ourselves. In the Forest of Arden, we encounter Shakespeare's most beguiling vision of the natural world as a realm of serenity and harmony, while brushing up against the briars that puncture our fantasies of the simple life. The New Oxford Shakespeare offers authoritative editions of Shakespeare's works with introductory materials designed to encourage new interpretations of the plays and poems. As You Like It is one of Shakespeare's finest romantic comedies, variously lyrical, melancholy, satiric, comic and absurd. Its highly implausible plot generates a profusion of love-lorn men, a resourceful heroine in disguise, sexual ambiguity, melancholy philosophising and finally a multiplicity of marriages.

As You Like it by Penny Gay,William Shakespeare Pdf

One of the best loved of Shakespeare's 'middle comedies', As You Like It has rarely been out of the theatrical repertoire. Centering on the cross-dressed figure of Rosalind, the play both celebrates and questions the state of being in love. This study attempts to recreate the Elizabethan audience's experience of the play - its awareness of issues that have been elided in subsequent, simply 'romantic' readings. Using an innovative theory of the significance of the Globe's stage space, Penny Gay examines the play's presentation of issues of power, sexuality, gender and genre.

As You Like It: The Oxford Shakespeare by William Shakespeare Pdf

As You Like It is Shakespeare's most light-hearted comedy, and its witty heroine Rosalind has his longest female role. In this edition, Alan Brissenden reassesses both its textual and performance history, showing how interpretations have changed since the first recorded production in 1740. He examines Shakespeare's sources and elucidates the central themes of love, pastoral, and doubleness. Detailed annotations investigate the allusive and often bawdy language, enabling student, actor, and director to savour the humour and the seriousness of the play to the full. As You Like It Illustrated by William Shakespeare Pdf

As You Like It is a pastoral comedy by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in 1599 and first published in the First Folio in 1623. The play's first performance is uncertain, though a performance at Wilton House in 1603 has been suggested as a possibility. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden. In the forest, they encounter a variety of memorable characters, notably the melancholy traveller Jaques who speaks many of Shakespeare's most famous speeches (such as "All the world's a stage", "too much of a good thing" and "A fool! A fool! I met a fool in the forest"). Jaques provides a sharp contrast to the other characters in the play, always observing and disputing the hardships of life in the country.

As You Like It (Annotated with Biography and Critical Essay) by William Shakespeare Pdf

As You Like It was written around 1599 and is one of Shakespeare’s comedies. It is set in a pastoral world (an idealized rural setting) and is full of jokes, songs, puns, and romance. It is one of the most light-hearted of Shakespeares works. There are more songs in As You Like It than any other Shakespeare play. The play makes many references to classical mythology and medieval folklore. It was inspired by Thomas Lodge’s story Rosalynde published in 1590. The play is partly set in the countryside in France, in the Forest of Arden (or, alternatively, Ardenne). In contrast, the other setting is the court of a duchy. In the duchy, Duke Frederick has successfully usurped his brother Duke Senior from his position as ruler. Duke Senior has been exiled to the Forest of Arden, where he vows to begin anew, along with his followers and supporters. The exiles talk about the qualities of court life and how they compare to country life. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.
