The Small Guide to Anxiety by Gary Small, MD,Gigi Vorgan Pdf

From New York Times bestselling author and expert on neuroscience and human behavior, The Small Guide to Anxiety provides a comprehensive overview of anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias -- along with the latest treatment solutions from conventional and alternative therapies to new scientific discoveries and interventions. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the US, affecting 40 million adult Americans. This accessible guide starts with providing readers with an overview of anxiety: what it is, who gets it, how to recognize it, major causes (genetics, environment, etc.), and how a small amount of anxiety can actually help motivate us along with the dangers of letting more severe anxiety go untreated. Dr. Small discusses the various types of anxiety, general therapeutic approaches used for all anxiety disorders, and how to know when it’s time to seek professional help. Each of the other chapters will cover a specific anxiety disorder (panic, OCD, etc.) and open with a case study example. Small will describe causes, symptoms, conventional treatments (e.g., medications, psychotherapy), alternative therapies (e.g., exercise, meditation, yoga, homeopathy), and novel therapies (e.g., transmagnetic stimulation [TMS]), as well as new scientific discoveries and interventions coming down the pike (e.g., focused ultrasound). In addition to case studies and patient interviews, all chapters will include side-bars with factoids, lists, and other helpful information.

The Sydney Handbook of Anxiety Disorders by Philip Boyce,Anthony Harris,Juliette Drobny,Lisa Lampe,Vladan Starcevic,Richard Bryant Pdf

This book presents a comprehensive guide to anxiety disorders, a major mental health concern in Australia. It uniquely explores a biopsychosocial model adopted by the University of Sydney. Anxiety disorders are common psychiatric conditions with a devastating effect on quality of life that is often underestimated. Unfortunately, anxiety is as misunderstood among patients and health practitioners as it is common. While more than 14 percent of Australians exhibit symptoms of anxiety disorders, only half seek treatment. Of great concern is the fact that 40 percent of those who do seek treatment receive misguided advice. Despite this alarming news, there is hope. The Australian mental health community, particularly the faculty of the University of Sydney, is rallying around anxiety research and clinical treatment. The Sydney Handbook of Anxiety Disorders presents the latest and most comprehensive information on the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety. This guide clearly lays out a biopsychosocial model for understanding anxiety that involves biological activity of the brain, psychological theories on attachment, conditioning, cognition and recognition of social triggers. New and traditional psychological and pharmacological treatment options are meticulously analysed in simple language, while case studies give real-life examples of diagnosis and treatment plans. The Sydney Handbook of Anxiety Disorders shares the experience and expertise of the best medical doctors and mental health specialists in Australia. The result is a must-read manual for anxiety sufferers and those who treat them.

Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic by Michelle G. Craske,David H. Barlow Pdf

"Research on the efficacy of nonpharmacological treatments for the various anxiety disorders has been ongoing for over three decades at our institutions, the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University and the University of California, Los Angeles, Anxiety Disorders Behavioral Research Program. Developments in the conceptualization of panic attacks and panic disorder (PD) in the 1980s and 1990s made possible significant improvements in the psychological treatment of PD and the development of panic control treatment (PCT), a treatment for panic disorder. Since then a substantial body of evidence on the efficacy of this intervention and closely related variants containing very similar components has accumulated, and it is stipulated as a first line treatment of choice in clinical practice guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which produces guidelines for the National Health Service in the UK (aPa, 2009; NICE, 2019). In 2013 PCT was evaluated as meeting the criteria for an Evidence Based Program by the Division of Quality and Performance Improvement of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the Public Health Service in the United States. Similarly, the Society of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association (1998) rated the evidence as "strong" in supporting PCT as an evidence-based intervention for panic disorder. After the first strong evidence for the efficacy of this approach began to appear (e.g. Barlow et al., 1989) we recognized the value of a guide outlining the treatment procedures. Hence, the Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic: Workbook and Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic: Therapist Guide were written and have now been revised. Now in its fifth edition, the revised client workbook is written in a style suitable for the client's direct use, usually under the supervision of a trained professional although it can be used in a self-help format, particularly for less severe cases"--
