A Treatise on Domestic Economy by Catharine Esther Beecher Pdf

A Treatise on Domestic Economy For the Use of Young Ladies at Home and at School Catharine Esther Beecher THE PECULIAR RESPONSIBILITIES OF AMERICAN WOMEN. There are some reasons, why American women should feel an interest in the support of the democratic institutions of their Country, which it is important that they should consider. The great maxim, which is the basis of all our civil and political institutions, is, that "all men are created equal," and that they are equally entitled to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." But it can readily be seen, that this is only another mode of expressing the fundamental principle which the Great Ruler of the Universe has established, as the law of His eternal government. "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;" and "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them," are the Scripture forms, by which the Supreme Lawgiver requires that each individual of our race shall regard the happiness of others, as of the same value as his own; and which forbid any institution, in private or civil life, which secures advantages to one class, by sacrificing the interests of another. The principles of democracy, then, are identical with the principles of Christianity. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Utility by Anthony Kenny,Charles Kenny Pdf

This book by Anthony and Charles Kenny brings a serious scholarly perspective--actually, two perspectives that work surprisingly well together--to the subject matter. The book is a set of essays, each chapter alternately on the philosophy (written by Anthony, a former master of Balliol College, Oxford) and the economics (written by Charles, a noted economist) of happiness. Their approach implicitly reminds the reader that philosophy and economics used to be one and the same (a commentary in itself on the sometimes sorry effects of growing academic specialization). The book asks essentially two questions: What is happiness all about? And how is it related other things we are supposed to care about, like quality of life or wealth? The two authors weave together history with current debates and new evidence to give a rich account of the state of our understanding. And it's actually very readable, so don't let the imposing academic cover scare you off.

Rise, Demise and Rebirth of Economic Nationalism. Reflections on Historical Economic Philosophy by Ejaz Gul Pdf

Essay from the year 2005 in the subject Philosophy - General Essays, Eras, grade: 5, , language: English, abstract: This paper presents a valuable and interesting study on economic philosophy of economic nationalism. Economic Nationalism (formally known as Mercantilism) was the dominant school of thought in Europe from the 16th to 18th Century. Here it is assumed that wealth and monetary assets are identical. Mercantilism suggests that the ruling government should advance economic goals by playing a role in the economy mainly by encouraging exports and discouraging imports. The theory dominated economic policies of Europe and is believed to have encouraged the many intra-European wars of the period and played a role in expansion of European Imperialism both in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. Many economists around the globe have written about the economic philosophy of Mercantilism, however, there is need to understand the true context of philosophy based on socio-economic environment which was prevailing at that time. This research paper is about the rise and fall of economic nationalism as a philosophy bringing out facts about roots of philosophy, the role it played in the economics of 18th Century and the causes of its demise. The paper also describes the relevance of economic nationalism in the 21st century. It concludes that the philosophy of economic nationalism is still being partially practiced in the 21st century, in one form or the other, under the carpet of economic liberalism. Strangely, many of our fiscal, monetary and general economic reforms in 21st century are in line with the philosophy of economic nationalism.
