The Philosophy of Religion of Alexander Campbell by J. Caleb Clanton Pdf

Well known for the important role he played in the American Restoration Movement, Alexander Campbell was one of the most respected and influential religious figures of 19th-century America. Although Campbell’s legacy as a religious leader and theologian has been widely acknowledged and documented, his contributions as a philosopher of religion have been largely neglected. The Philosophy of Religion of Alexander Campbell reintroduces readers to Campbell as a philosopher of religion and explores the philosophical basis for the views underlying his religious movement. It begins with a highly readable discussion of Campbell’s role in antebellum American religion and proceeds to an exploration of his philosophical influences. J. Caleb Clanton then reconstructs, explains, and evaluates Campbell’s philosophy of religion. He critically examines Campbell’s unique, revealed-idea argument for the existence of God—that is, if God did not exist, we could not form the distinct idea of God. Clanton goes on to explore Campbell’s defense of miracles, including the resurrection of Christ, and his responses to the problem of evil and the problem of divine hiddenness. The final and most speculative chapter collects and synthesizes from scattered writings Campbell’s view on morality and religion— namely that there is no morality without God—which has proven difficult to defend on philosophical grounds. With this book, the author makes a unique and important contribution to the literature of the Stone-Campbell movement. Clanton presents Campbell’s views strictly in philosophical terms and evaluates them from a philosophical perspective without regard to religious apologetics. In doing so, he illuminates previously unexplored dimensions of Campbell and his work, both historically and theologically, and clearly validates Campbell’s inclusion in contemporary discussions of the philosophy of religion.

The Role of Grace In the Thought of Alexander Campbell by William J. Richardson Pdf

Despite his strong emphasis and personal dependence upon the grace of God as manifested in Jesus Christ, Alexander Campbell's views stood in marked contrast to those of the Reformed tradition, especially as manifested in the revivals of the second Great Awakening in America. A study of his views on this subject has relevance in the present context.

Alexander Campbell's Theology by Winifred Ernest Garrison Pdf

Excerpt from Alexander Campbell's Theology: Its Sources and Historical Setting The studies, the results of which are embodied in this volume, were begun in the preparation of a thesis for a degree from the University of Chicago in 1897, under the title, "The Sources of Alexander Campbell's Theology." They have been continued, and are now published, in the hope that those who are interested or may become interested in the subject, may derive from them some aid in interpreting Mr. Campbell's work as a theologian in the light of its historical setting. It is of little consequence that a theologian is attacked by his enemies and defended by his friends. But it is of much importance that he be understood; and he cannot be understood - his strength cannot be appreciated, much less can his shortcomings be reasonably condoned - without an acquaintance with the conditions under which he worked and the influences which worked upon him. It is hoped that this attempt to view Alexander Campbell's theology from the historical standpoint may contribute something to the understanding of it. A Life of Alexander Campbell by Douglas A. Foster Pdf

The first critical biography of Alexander Campbell, one of the founders of the Stone-Campbell Movement A Life of Alexander Campbell examines the core identity of a gifted and determined reformer to whom millions of Christians around the globe today owe much of their identity—whether they know it or not. Douglas Foster assesses principal parts of Campbell’s life and thought to discover his significance for American Christianity and the worldwide movement that emerged from his work. He examines Campbell’s formation in Ireland, his creation and execution of a reform of Christianity beginning in America, and his despair at the destruction of his vision by the American Civil War. A Life of Alexander Campbell shows why this important but sometimes misunderstood and neglected figure belongs at the heart of the American religious story.

Restoration and Philosophy by J. Caleb Clanton Pdf

A product of the Second Great Awakening of the nineteenth century, the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement gave rise to such denominations as the Church of Christ (a cappella), the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the independent Christian Churches/ Churches of Christ. While scholars have examined many of the historical, ecclesial, socio-cultural, and biographical dimensions of this indigenously American religious tradition, few have singled it out for philosophical exploration and critique. In Restoration and Philosophy, editor J. Caleb Clanton and a team of philosophers engage with the Stone-Campbell Restoration tradition to address issues related to epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, moral philosophy, aesthetics, environmentalism, and race. Along the way, the authors help to contextualize the Stone- Campbell Restoration tradition within American religious history--and within Christian philosophy more generally--and they show its continuing relevance today. Scholars and students of philosophy and religious studies, as as well as ministers and those interested in this uniquely American Christian tradition, will benefit from this carefully edited, thoroughly researched, and highly readable collection of essays by eminent philosophers and religious scholars. J. CALEB CLANTON is University Research Professor and professor of philosophy at Lipscomb University in Nashville. His previous books include Philosophy of Religion in the Classical American Tradition and The Philosophy of Religion of Alexander Campbell.

The Political Ethics of Alexander Campbell by Harold Lunger Pdf

Description: In these pages, laymen will find themselves and their condition of life the center of attention at all times. Consequently they will not find a specifically spiritual vocabulary or an alien pious rhetoric. They will not find a long list of prayers, practices and penances. They will not find a list of things to be given up. Patiently and gently, these souls will open up to God. They will see that true peace comes from true love, and that love means an entire giving, and that giving means some changes. Such transitions are sometimes easy, sometimes not. But in the end what was once unwisely loved is now put aside, and what was once foolishly despised is now embraced with gratitude. Every man who has gone even a part of the way knows this. The purpose of the book, then, is to open the soul to the grace of God and to show some practical consequences of the love of God in a life that wants to find love and peace. --from the Introduction
