The Treasures of Roberto Cofresi by Lubos Kordac Pdf

Roberto Cofresi, the son of an Italian immigrant, was born in Puerto Rico in 1791. He was raised in the vicinity of Cabo Rojo and as a child he was drawn to a life at sea. By the time he was fourteen, he'd joined privateers cruising the waters of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and in the following decades he became a pirate of wide renown, terrorizing ships of all nations. The American government found him to be a threat of such magnitude that they sent a squadron of naval vessels to the region to hunt him down. After more than twenty years of freebooting, Cofresi was finally captured, but not before he'd hidden a number of treasures on both sides of the Mona Channel. This is the story of "The Treasures of Roberto Cofresi."

The Legend of Roberto Cofresi dates back to the 1800s and started in the town of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Numerous myths and legendary stories have been written about him and his transformation from a life of merchant sailor to corsair. He was one of the bravest and most compassionate corsairs of his time. The War Against the Pirates by Barry Gough,Charles Borras Pdf

Based on hitherto unused sources in English and Spanish in British and American archives, in this book naval historian Barry Gough and legal authority Charles Borras investigate a secret Anglo-American coercive war against Spain, 1815-1835. Described as a war against piracy at the time, the authors explore how British and American interests – diplomatic and military – aligned to contain Spanish power to the critically influential islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico, facilitating the forging of an enduring but unproclaimed Anglo-American alliance which endures to this day. Due attention is given to United States Navy actions under Commodore David Porter, to this day a subject of controversy. More significantly though, through the juxtaposition of British, American and Spanish sources, this book uncovers the roots of piracy – and suppression– that laid the foundation for the tortured decline of the Spanish empire in the Americas and the subsequent rise of British and American empires, instrumental in stamping out Caribbean piracy for good.

Atlantic Piracy in the Early Nineteenth Century by Sarah Craze Pdf

Skilfully uses this notorious episode to illuminate the nature and extent of piracy in the period. The pirate attack on the British brig Morning Star, en route from Ceylon to London, near Ascension Island in 1828 was one of the most shocking episodes of piracy in the nineteenth century. Although the captain and many members of the crew were murdered by the pirates led by the notorious Benito de Soto, some survived, escaped and sailed the ship back to Britain. This book, based on extensive original research in Britain, Spain and Brazil, retells the story of the Morning Star, provides much new detail and corrects errors present in the many contemporary accounts of the attack. It sets the attack in the wider context of piracy in the period, and discusses many issues which the episode highlights: how pirates' careers began and developed; how they were pursued and tried, often with difficulty; what became of their treasure; how stories of the attack and of the survivors were sensationalised; how the women passengers on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.

Knickerbocker Commodore by Bruce A. Castleman Pdf

Explores the life and times of John Drake Sloat, the US Navy Pacific Squadron commander who occupied Monterey and declared the annexation of California at the beginning of the war with Mexico. Knickerbocker Commodore chronicles the life of Rear Admiral John Drake Sloat, an important but understudied naval figure in US history. Born and raised by a slave-owning gentry family in New York’s Hudson Valley, Sloat moved to New York City at age nineteen. Bruce A. Castleman explores Sloat’s forty-five-year career in the Navy, from his initial appointment as midshipman in the conflicts with revolutionary France to his service as commodore during the country’s war with Mexico. As the commodore in command of the naval forces in the Pacific, Sloat occupied Monterey and declared the annexation of California in July 1846, controversial actions criticized by some and defended by others. More than a biography of one man, this book illustrates the evolution of the peacetime Navy as an institution and its conversion from sail to steam. Using shipping news and Customs Service records from Sloat’s merchant voyages, Castleman offers a rare and insightful perspective on American maritime history. “Knickerbocker Commodore is a first-rate scholarly biography of John Drake Sloat. In his study, Castleman presents a persuasive assessment of this important naval officer and his role in the controversial early days of the Mexican War in California.” — John H. Schroeder, author of Matthew Calbraith Perry: Antebellum Sailor and Diplomat “Written by a scholar and a former naval officer, Bruce Castleman has given us not only a well-balanced biography of John Drake Sloat but also a history of the US Navy from the time of the War of 1812 to the Civil War. In addition, his well-researched book provides an important contribution to the war with Mexico and the American conquest of Alta California through the actions and decision making of this ‘Knickerbocker Commodore.’” — Gary F. Kurutz, Curator Emeritus of Special Collections, California State Library “The Mexican-American War of 1846–47 was a war of foundational importance to the United States. Bruce Castleman’s biography of an important but little-known participant deftly captures the critical moment when America defeated its major continental rival. Even better, by thoughtfully tracing the entirety of Sloat’s life, the book winningly tells the story of the early American Navy from its tremulous beginnings in the Revolution to its steam-powered modernity in the Civil War. Castleman’s biography is of more than just a man; it is of an entire time in American history, and all the more useful for it.” — David J. Silbey, author of A War of Frontier and Empire: The Philippine-American War, 1899–1902

Captain Cofresí by Victor Rodriguez Pdf

Captain Cofresí is a historical adventure novel set in early 1800s Puerto Rico and its neighboring islands. Candido Colón, an eighteen-year-old Spanish orphan, now a fugitive from the law, and his slightly younger companion Bebo Marín, a runaway slave, are caught in a sea storm and washed ashore on Mona Island, just west of Puerto Rico. The two intrepid castaways survive by hunting and fishing until they stumble upon a small cave where they discover a horde of weapons and foodstuffs. The gleeful pair celebrate their discovery by utilizing the horde. But they are soon caught there by the cache's owners, Captain Roberto Cofresí (1791-1825), the notorious pirate from Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, and his plucky crew. Given the choice of staying on Mona-where they'll eventually be caught and arrested by the Spanish-or joining the pirates, the two boys opt to join them and soon embark on an adventure that will change their lives. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York, Victor Rodriguez is a retired laboratory technician now devoted to full-time writing. He is the author of Eldorado in East Harlem, a coming-of-age novel set in 1960, and Taíno Sunrise, a historical novel about the emancipation of the indigenous natives of the New World.
