The Musical Structure of Plato's Dialogues by J.B. Kennedy Pdf

J. B. Kennedy argues that Plato's dialogues have an unsuspected musical structure and use symbols to encode Pythagorean doctrines. The followers of Pythagoras famously thought that the cosmos had a hidden musical structure and that wise philosophers would be able to hear this harmony of the spheres. Kennedy shows that Plato gave his dialogues a similar, hidden musical structure. He divided each dialogue into twelve parts and inserted symbols at each twelfth to mark a musical note. These passages are relatively harmonious or dissonant, and so traverse the ups and downs of a known musical scale. Many of Plato's ancient followers insisted that Plato used symbols to conceal his own views within the dialogues, but modern scholars have denied this. Kennedy, an expert in Pythagorean mathematics and music theory, now shows that Plato's dialogues do contain a system of symbols. Scholars in the humanities, without knowledge of obsolete Greek mathematics, would not have been able to detect these musical patterns. This book begins with a concise and accessible introduction to Plato's symbolic schemes and the role of allegory in ancient times. The following chapters then annotate the musical symbols in two of Plato's most popular dialogues, the Symposium and Euthyphro, and show that Plato used the musical scale as an outline for structuring his narratives.

Plato's Penal Code by Trevor J. Saunders Pdf

This book assesses Plato's penal code within the tradition of Greek penology. Saunders provides a detailed exposition of the emergence of the concept of publicly controlled, rationally calculated, and socially directed punishment in the period between Homer and Plato. He outlines the serious debate that ensued in the fifth century over the opposition by philosophers to popular judicial assumptions, and shows how the philosophical arguments gradually gained ground. He demonstrates that Plato advanced the most radical of the philosophical formulations of the concept of punishment in his Laws, arguing that punishment is or should be utilitarian and strictly reformative. This first comprehensive and detailed study of Plato's penology gives deserved attention to the works of a most important political and legal thinker.

Plato's Sun by Andrew Lawless Pdf

In Plato's Sun, Andrew Lawless takes on the challenge of creating an introductory text for philosophy, arguing that such a work has to take into account of the strangeness of the field and divulge it, rather than suppress it beneath traditional certainties and authoritative pronouncements.

The Socrates Code by Peter Hubral Pdf

Peter Hubral sets out a meticulously researched and convincing case that Western Philosophy is founded less upon the original Ancient Greek texts, as on a careless and ahistorical misreading of them, for which he provides an unprecedented rigorous revision. He shows that the original Greek terms astronomía, átomos, kósmos, geometría, idéa, planétes, práxis, psyché, mousiké, sympósion, theoría, and so on have nothing at all to do with astronomy, atom, cosmos, geometry, and so on. The originals terms rather find their equivalents in the Chinese Taiji-practice that he follows since 1997 under the guidance of Dao-Grandmaster Fangfu. He provides abundant evidence that this millennial practice equals the unwritten lost practice of dying (meléte thanátou) about which Plato writes: Those, who happen to grasp the philosophía correctly, risk being unrecognised by others because it is nothing but 'practising to die and to be dead' (Phaidon 64a). This practice - see the front cover - is based on the rigorous implementation of Wuwei, which the Greeks call philía that philosophía refers to, thus giving Greek wisdom (sophía) a completely new meaning. Due matching the Dao-practice to the practice of dying, Hubral completely dismantles the illusion that the western world has constructed about Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, etc. He shows that they made much more profound discoveries with the practice of dying about nature than what we are told about their contributions to mankind in uncountable commentaries!

Laws by Plato Pdf

The Laws is Plato's last, longest, and perhaps, most famous work. It presents a conversation on political philosophy between three elderly men: an unnamed Athenian, a Spartan named Megillus, and a Cretan named Clinias. They worked to create a constitution for Magnesia, a new Cretan colony that would make all of its citizens happy and virtuous. In this work, Plato combines political philosophy with applied legislation, going into great detail concerning what laws and procedures should be in the state. For example, they consider whether drunkenness should be allowed in the city, how citizens should hunt, and how to punish suicide. The principles of this book have entered the legislation of many modern countries and provoke a great interest of philosophers even in the 21st century.

Platonic Legislations by David Lloyd Dusenbury Pdf

This book discusses how Plato, one the fiercest legal critics in ancient Greece, became – in the longue durée – its most influential legislator. Making use of a vast scholarly literature, and offering original readings of a number of dialogues, it argues that the need for legal critique and the desire for legal permanence set the long arc of Plato’s corpus—from the Apology to the Laws. Modern philosophers and legal historians have tended to overlook the fact that Plato was the most prolific legislator in ancient Greece. In the pages of his Republic and Laws, he drafted more than 700 statutes. This is more legal material than can be credited to the archetypal Greek legislators—Lycurgus, Draco, and Solon. The status of Plato’s laws is unique, since he composed them for purely hypothetical cities. And remarkably, he introduced this new genre by writing hard-hitting critiques of the Greek ideal of the sovereignty of law. Writing in the milieu in which immutable divine law vied for the first time with volatile democratic law, Plato rejected both sources of law, and sought to derive his laws from what he called ‘political technique’ (politikê technê). At the core of this technique is the question of how the idea of justice relates to legal and institutional change. Filled with sharp observations and bold claims, Platonic Legislations shows that it is possible to see Plato—and our own legal culture—in a new light “In this provocative, intelligent, and elegant work D. L. Dusenbury has posed crucial questions not only as regards Plato’s thought in the making, but also as regards our contemporaneity.”—Giorgio Camassa, University of Udine “There is a tension in Greek law, and in Greek legal thinking, between an understanding of law as unchangeable and authoritative, and a recognition that formal rules are often insufficient for the interpretation of reality, and need to be constantly revised to match it. Dusenbury’s book illuminates the sophistication of Plato’s legal thought in its engagement with this tension, and explores the potential of Plato’s reflection for modern legal theory.”—Mirko Canevaro, The University of Edinburgh

The Soul's Code by James Hillman Pdf

“[An] acute and powerful vision . . . offers a renaissance of humane values.”—Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul and The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life Plato called it “daimon,” the Romans “genius,” the Christians “guardian angel”; today we use such terms as “heart,” “spirit,” and “soul.” While philosophers and psychologists from Plato to Jung have studied and debated the fundamental essence of our individuality, our modern culture refuses to accept that a unique soul guides each of us from birth, shaping the course of our lives. In this extraordinary bestseller, James Hillman presents a brilliant vision of our selves, and an exciting approach to the mystery at the center of every life that asks, “What is it, in my heart, that I must do, be, and have? And why?” Drawing on the biographies of figures such as Ella Fitzgerald and Mohandas K. Gandhi, Hillman argues that character is fate, that there is more to each individual than can be explained by genetics and environment. The result is a reasoned and powerful road map to understanding our true nature and discovering an eye-opening array of choices—from the way we raise our children to our career paths to our social and personal commitments to achieving excellence in our time. Praise for The Soul’s Code “Champions a glorious sort of rugged individualism that, with the help of an inner daimon (or guardian angel), can triumph against all odds.”—The Washington Post Book World “[A] brilliant, absorbing work . . . Hillman dares us to believe that we are each meant to be here, that we are needed by the world around us.”—Publishers Weekly

Plato and the Socratic Dialogue by Charles H. Kahn Pdf

This book offers a new interpretation of Plato's early and middle dialogues as the expression of a unified philosophical vision. Whereas the traditional view sees the dialogues as marking successive stages in Plato's philosophical development, we may more legitimately read them as reflecting an artistic plan for the gradual, indirect and partial exposition of Platonic philosophy. The magnificent literary achievement of the dialogues can be fully appreciated only from the viewpoint of a unitarian reading of the philosophical content.

Pursuing the Good by Douglas Cairns Pdf

This volume, the fourth in the Edinburgh Leventis Studies series, comprises a selection of papers from the conference held in Edinburgh March 2005 in conjunction with Professor Terry Penner's tenure of the A. G. Leventis Visiting Research Chair in Greek. It brings together contributions from leading Plato scholars from Britain, Europe and North America on a closely defined topic central to Plato's thought and to Ancient Philosophy--Plato's Form of the Good. The importance of the collection lies in the combination and presentation in one place of a range of different approaches to the good in Plato's Republic, and different solutions to the problems posed and proposed by these approaches. The two central issues, which form an underlying thread throughout the collection, are: first whether Plato's Republic is centred on what is good for individual humans, or on some quasi-moral good; and secondly, what the Form of the Good is. Pursuing the Good goes beyond recent studies in the field, and will appeal to classicists and philosophers alike. To the advanced student, it represents a wide-ranging introduction to central issues of Plato's philosophy; for the academic it will provide stimulus through antithetical and controversial solutions to questions old and new.

The Lao Tzu Code by Peter Hubral Pdf

Peter Hubral explains in detail the modern Tai Chi-teaching of Dao-grandmaster Fangfu which goes back to the Yellow Emperor and Lao Tzu. He demonstrates its excellent match with the written Greek Pythagorean/Platonic philosophía. He shows, how both teachings contribute to deepen the understanding of modern cognitive and health sciences as well as physical and psychic therapies. He provides with this inedited treatise on ancient Chinese wisdom a solid foundation for The Socrates Code, in which he completely revises the careless and ahistorical misreading of ancient Greek texts. He uses The Lao Tzu Code also to justify The Plato Code, in which he documents the strong impact that this misreading ironically had on the modern western culture. The front cover of The Lao Tzu Code shows Lao Tzu performing a Qi-transmission in a similar way as Fangfu. Also the Greek masters of the philosophía used it, because without it there would neither exist modern Tai Chi-teaching nor ancient Greek philosophía.

The Plato Code by Peter Hubral Pdf

The Plato Code extends The Socrates Code, which is the first book in a series of three, in which Peter Hubral dismantles today's understanding of the Pythagorean/Platonic philosophía, the mother of modern philosophy. He shows that its many Greek masters taught how to obtain extrasensory natural knowledge, which appears "out of itself" on what Lao Tzu calls in the Daodejing the Great Path (Da Dao) and Parmenides calls in his Poem on Nature the Path (Way) to Truth. This step-wise path from the known into the unknown provides prenatal knowledge based on the unconditioned cognition principle: Consciousness can be significantly expanded by rigorous meditative dedication to Nothingness (Nonbeing). The composite lion-bull motive on the front cover is an ancient Iranian allegory for this principle. The philosophía can, like the Dao-teaching of Fangfu, only be understood with it. This principle got lost to the West after the unwritten philosophía disappeared once and for ever in the Byzantine Empire. The consequence is that the written philosophía is ever since interpreted with the only cognition principle known today to the West: Being (familiar world) defines the consciousness. Its application to the written philosophía distorted the Greek wisdom and its ancient sources in the Middle East completely. It created the castle in the air that the author already largely destructs in The Socrates Code. He now shows in The Plato Code that the Western Culture has ironically mistook it to be the stronghold of western philosophy, science, art, literature and religion. He convincingly concludes that nothing could be more wrong in the history of the western culture and science than this.
