Poems and Translations (Classic Reprint) by John M. Synge Pdf

Excerpt from Poems and Translations I have often thought that at the side of the poetic diction, which everyone condemns, modern verse contains a great deal of poetic material, using poetic in the same special sense. The poetry of exaltation Will be always the highest; but when men lose their poetic feeling for ordinary life, and cannot write poetry of ordinary things, their exalted poetry is likely to lose its strength of exaltation, in the way men cease to build beautiful, churches when they have iost happiness in building shops. Many of the Older poets, such as Villon and Herrick and Burns, used the whole of their personal life as their material, and the verse written in this way was read by strong men, and thieves, and deacons, not by little cliques only. Then, in the town writing of the eighteenth century, ordinary life was put into verse that was not poetry, and when poetry came back with Coleridge and Shelley, it went into verse that was not always human. In these days poetry is usually a flower of evil or good; but it is the timber of poetry that wears most surely, and there is no timber that has not strong roots among the clay and worms. Even if we grant that exalted poetry can be kept successful by itself, the strong things of life are needed in poetry also, to Show that what is exalted or tender is not made by feeble blood. It may almost be said that before verse can be human again it must learn to be brutal. The poems which follow were written at different times during the last sixteen or seventeen years, most of them before the Views just stated, with which they have little to do, had come into my head. The translations are sometimes free, and sometimes almost literal, according as seemed most fitting with the form of language I have used. Excerpt from Translations Underlying conspicuous success of the Seafarer order is Pound's conception of what the poet's job is: the rendering, without deformation, of something, within him or without, which he has clearly apprehended and seized in his mind. Verse Translations From Classic Authors (Classic Reprint) by C. E. F. Starkey Pdf

Excerpt from Verse Translations From Classic Authors It is an instructive fact that the French word "traduire," "to translate," is derived from "traducere," a word which has as a secondary meaning "to ridicule" or "misrepresent," while the English form, "traduce," has a still uglier signification. To translate must always be to traduce to a greater or less degree; either spirit or letter must be more or less lost in the process, even in the most perfect translation. Every language possesses its own metaphors, idioms, turns of expression, and modes of thought; every language has its own constructions, syntax, metrical system; and the successful transference of a thought from one language to another depends on the skill of the translator in deciding whether he may employ the same metaphor, metre, or what not, or must cast about for a corresponding or similar one which shall produce the same effect. Perhaps these remarks may best be illustrated by mentioning a perfect example of what a translation ought not to be. Nothing will suit our purpose better than Miltons famous "traduction" of Horace's Ode to Pyrrha. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Translations in Poetry and Prose (Classic Reprint) by Hermann Bokum Pdf

Excerpt from Translations in Poetry and Prose Many of the translations in this volume, and particularly those from Gothe, may be regarded as belonging to the former class; while those from Herder, for instance, will find a place among the productions last mentioned. But however great a degree of pleasure these translations may be calculated to afford, one of the principal reasons, which has given rise to this publication, is to be found in the hope, that they may awaken or foster in the reader a lively desire of becoming acquainted with the originals. Foliage Or Poems Original and Translated (Classic Reprint) by Leigh Hunt Pdf

Excerpt from Foliage or Poems Original and Translated Tun downfall of the French school of poetry has of late been encreasing in rapidity; it's cold and artificial compositions have given way, like so many fantastic figures of snow; and imagination breathes again in a more green and genial time. An attachment to the school undoubtedly survives in some quarters; but those who defend it 'as a superior one of poetry, merely shew that they have no real. Excerpt from Translations Into Greek Verse and Prose Ere, where the world is quiet, Here, where all trouble seems Dead winds' and spent waves' riot In doubtful dreams Of dreams; I watch the green field growing For reaping folk and sowing, For harvest-time and mowing, A sleepy world of streams. I am tired of tears and laughter, And men that laugh and weep 5 Of what may come hereafter For men that sow to reap I am weary of days and hours, Blown buds Of barren flowers, Desires and dreams and powers And everything but sleep. Old English Poetry by John Duncan Ernst Spaeth Pdf

Excerpt from Old English Poetry: Translations Into Alliterative Verse With Introductions and Notes In the preface to the volume of Early English Poems (1910) in which many of these translations first ap peared, the writer said: These renderings represent at least an attempt to make English poetry out of Anglo Saxon poetry. Many of them were made years ago for use in the class-room with my students. Like the poems they aim to reproduce, they led a mouth-to-ear existence long before they were elevated to the dignity of 'letters.' Even now the translator would wish to have them judged chiefly by their effect when read aloud. The older the poetry, the more vocal it is. Versions of Old English poetry that fail to make their appeal through the living rhythm of the living voice, fail not only in an essential of all poetry but in a quintessential of anglo-saxon poetry. In the special note on the Old English Alliter ative Metre, I have discussed the principles followed in rendering the Germanic alliterative verse in modern Eng lish. Prizes and Proximes by Anonim Pdf

Excerpt from Prizes and Proximes: For Prose and Verse Translation With Some Original Poems A Preface is generally hard to read, and always hard to write. The Editor ventures therefore to reprint what he said last year in introducing a similar volume, entitled, "Prize Translations, Poems, and Parodies." It only remains for him to point out one or two differences which are also, he trusts, improvements. Several Prose Translations have been interspersed. Fewer alternative versions have been admitted. Some Translations and Original Poems, which were likely to have suffered a nine-years' imprisonment, not for the reason that Horace gave to his young friends, but because of the res angusta of he Journal, have obtained their Habeas Corpus. The multitude of translators is no guarantee of wisdom, but it is satisfactory to observe that the interest in the Translation Prizes has not flagged, and that for the "Golds and Reds," whose score is here printed, nearly 1800 arrows have been discharged - not all in vain, though here unrecorded.
