Songs of the Prima Donna (Classic Reprint) by Ira I. Sterner Pdf

Excerpt from Songs of the Prima Donna Thou singest from thy heart through many hearts toward the Heart of the sky. Thou singest sweetly and truly, as a prima donna can and should. If thou knowest thyself, thou knowest what power inspires thee to sing. The same power inspires me to write thy feelings in words of song. ' Edward Greenfield, GUARDIAN Prima Donnas have always provoked extreme reactions - branded as spoilt and manipulative, hated and resented, even when most admired. But is this the whole story? Rupert Christiansen examines the truth behind the myth, seeking the real women behind the stereotypes. In this new edition of his acclaimed study, he puts three hundred years of these remarkable women - from Pasta and Patti to Norman and Bartoli - into their historical and musical context. He reveals their vital creative contribution to the development of opera and the intense personal struggles that were often the price of success."

Opera and British Print Culture in the Long Nineteenth Century by Christina Fuhrmann Pdf

Recently, studies of opera, of print culture, and of music in Britain in the long nineteenth century have proliferated. This essay collection explores the multiple point of interaction among these fields. Past scholarship often used print as a simple conduit for information about opera in Britain, but these essays demonstrate that print and opera existed in a more complex symbiosis. This collection embeds opera within the culture of Britain in the long nineteenth century, a culture inundated by print. The essays explore: how print culture both disseminated and shaped operatic culture; how the businesses of opera production and publishing intertwined; how performers and impresarios used print culture to cultivate their public persona; how issues of nationalism, class, and gender impacted reception in the periodical press; and how opera intertwined with literature, not only drawing source material from novels and plays, but also as a plot element in literary works or as a point of friction in literary circles. As the growth of digital humanities increases access to print sources, and as opera scholars move away from a focus on operas as isolated works, this study points the way forward to a richer understanding of the intersections between opera and print culture.

Vocal Apparitions by Michal Grover-Friedlander Pdf

Cinema and opera have become intertwined in a variety of powerful and unusual ways. Vocal Apparitions tells the story of this fascinating intersection, interprets how it occurred, and explores what happens when opera is projected onto the medium of film. Michal Grover-Friedlander finds striking affinities between film and opera--from Lon Chaney's classic silent film, The Phantom of the Opera, to the Marx Brothers' A Night at the Opera to Fellini's E la nave va. One of the guiding questions of this book is what occurs when what is aesthetically essential about one medium is transposed into the aesthetic field of the other. For example, Grover-Friedlander's comparison of an opera by Poulenc and a Rossellini film, both based on Cocteau's play The Human Voice, shows the relation of the vocal and the visual to be surprisingly affected by the choice of the medium. Her analysis of the Marx Brothers' A Night at the Opera demonstrates how, as a response to opera's infatuation with death, cinema comically acts out a correction of opera's fate. Grover-Friedlander argues that filmed operas such as Zeffirelli's Otello and Friedrich's Falstaff show the impossibility of a direct transformation of the operatic into the cinematic. Paradoxically, cinema at times can be more operatic than opera itself, thus capturing something essential that escapes opera's self-understanding. A remarkable look at how cinema has been haunted--and transformed--by opera, Vocal Apparitions reveals something original and important about each medium.
