The Prince and the Pauper "Annotated" Literature & Fiction by Mark Twain Pdf

On a magical day in London, two boys are born into two different families, and they just happen to look exactly like one another. One boy, Tom Canty, is poor. The other boy, Prince Edward of Wales, is obviously rich.Fast forward a bit, and Tom is a young boy living in the slums of London. He has an abusive father and grandmother, a kind mother and sisters, and a pretty sad life. But he has a dream: one day, he wants to meet a real-life prince. After dreaming about living in the lap of luxury, Tom makes his way to Westminster Palace one day. When he gets a little too close to the gate, a guard attacks him. Lucky for Tom, this attracts the attention of the prince, who rebukes the guard and lets our little pauper into the palace. It's his dream come true.Surprisingly enough, the two little boys hit it off. Turns out they both have pretty terrible fathers, so we guess that's something to bond over. Eventually Tom gets to tell the prince about his life, and the prince thinks this sounds amazing. You know what's coming next: they decide to swap lives, just for a little while. But right in the middle of all of this, the prince storms out, determined to discipline the guard who bruised Tom. What he wasn't expecting was to be mistaken for Tom and kicked out of the palace because no one could recognize him without his fancy clothes. Now he's just another poor person on the street. The prince tries to tell everyone he comes across what happened to him, but it doesn't work; everyone just thinks he's crazy. Meanwhile, Tom starts to get a little fidgety at the palace. The prince has been gone for a pretty long time, and Tom's worried about getting caught. He tries to turn himself in, but everyone just assumes that he's crazy, too. So the prince's dad, King Henry VIII, orders that no one talk about his son's mental illness. Looks like Tom is going to be the new Prince of England.Tom's first days as a prince are pretty hard, because he doesn't know any of the etiquette or procedures of princehood. It's so bad that he drinks the water meant for washing his hands and stuffs his pockets with nuts at his first royal dinner. Classy.Back to Prince Edward. John Candy has found him-er, wait, we mean John Canty has found him, and John is pretty angry that Edward doesn't have any money to give him. He brings the prince home, assuming that he's Tom, and beats him for saying that he's the prince. Only Tom's mom believes that the prince is not her son. Because moms always know. But the family doesn't have a lot of time to deal with these strange developments: they have to skip town when they find out that John Canty has killed Father Andrew. The prince takes advantage of all the distracted hurry to get out of John Canty's clutches and find out how to get back to the palace.Being a smart kid, Edward does make it back to the palace, but no one believes that he is the real prince. The crowd is just about ready to tear him to pieces when Miles Hendon comes to save the day. Also, everyone gets pretty distracted when it's announced that King Henry VIII has died.So that makes Edward the king. Awesome. You know, except for that whole his father is dead thing. Oh yeah, and no one knows that Edward is the prince, so Tom is the one the royal court turns to. Tom's first act as king is to end Henry VIII's reign of terror by pardoning a bunch of people who have been condemned to grisly deaths.Miles Hendon takes Edward to his home, and the Edward pretty much takes over everything. Hey, he's a prince: he's used to it. After a nap and dinner, Miles tells his whole life story. Apparently he was forced to spend three years away from home because his brother convinced his dad that he was going to elope. Edward is so sad about the story that he gives Miles the right to sit in his presence rather than stand all the time. What a great gift.

The Prince and the Pauper Annotated Book by Mark Twain Pdf

The youngest son of a poor family, Tom Canty lives in the relatively poor area of London known as Offal Court. Tom has always known that he was made for better things, and aspires to a more well-to-do lifestyle. The local parish priest is very encouraging to him, and teaches him to read and write. Tom spends alot of time hanging around the gates of the palace, eventually this pays off; he meets Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales. This is seen as somewhat of a threat to the Prince's safety by his guards, who want to whisk him off and beat him for his insolence, but Edward speaks up for Tom and asks him to accompany him into the palace chamber. The two boys begin to strike up a friendship; despite their different stations in life, and their wildly divergent upbringings, what they have in common is that they are two young boys of the same age who happen to look very similar to each other. They are both fascinated by the other's life. The wildest coincidence is that they share the same birthday. One thing leads to another and they decide to switch places for the day.The Prince goes outside dressed like Tom. He is carrying an important document with him. The guards don't recognize him and they drive him as far as the outer walls of the palace. When he is dropped off he makes his own way to Tom's family's home. It is a brutal experience; Tom's father is an alcoholic and extremely abusive. He manages to escape from him and he meets a soldier, nobleman Miles Hendon, who is returning from war. Miles doesn't believe a word of the boy's story about being a prince disguised as a poor boy, but he likes the boy and he decides to humor him by pretending that he believes what he is saying. He becomes his wing man, and protector. In the middle of the boys' identity switch, news arrives that King Henry VIII has died, which means that Prince Edward is now King of England. Tom is disguised as Edward and struggling to get used to the way in which the Court works, and with its customs. Because he does not seem to know what is what, everyone believes him to have some kind of illness that causes loss of memory. They are worried that he will eventually go mad. They ask him over and over again about the Great Seal of England but he remembers nothing about it, or where it is. They are slightly placated when Tom is asked to view judgement proceedings and makes some very sound observations. He cannot be that mad if he still has this much common sense.

The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain Pdf

Set in sixteenth-century England, The Prince and the Pauper follows two boys with vastly different lives: Tom Canty, the indigent child of an abusive, roustabout thief, and Prince Edward, the son of King Henry VIII and heir to the throne. One day, daydreaming while wandering near the king's palace, Canty catches sight of the prince-and nearly catches a brutal beating from the royal guards. Prince Edward commands them to stop and invites the street urchin into his immaculate home. Both fascinated by their strikingly similar appearances, the two boys craft a plot that could unwittingly upend the monarchy: to temporarily switch clothes, thereby swapping lives. Through first-hand experience-and a series of humorous follies-the two discover that neither life is as carefree as they expected. In The Prince and the Pauper, Twain elevates the classic theme of mistaken identity with his inimitable storytelling to create something uniquely American: a historical fable.

The Prince and the Pauper Annotated a Best Seller! by Mark Twain Pdf

The Prince and the Pauper, seemingly a simple novel, handles several divergent themes and ideas simultaneously. Foremost is the basic idea of the exchange of roles and lines between the prince and the pauper and the constant reference to their twin fates. Prior to meeting each other, both boys have dreams of living the life of the other. Both are, in a sense, innocents who learn a great deal about life as a result of their exchanging clothes and roles. Likewise, the dreams of each are shattered as a result of the exchange. Ironically, both live at first in an extremely restricted society. Like Huck Finn, who did not want to be "sivilized" and who rejected the confinements of society, Tom Canty has no freedom and is constantly beaten and restricted in his home environment. Likewise, the young prince is confined to his royal apartments and has little or no freedom -- that is, he does not have the freedom that he believes a commoner has. The freedom that both young lads desire exists only in their dreams. Of Tom, Twain writes: "His old dreams had been so pleasant, but this reality was so dreary."Another basic idea is, of course, Twain's satiric expose of the concept that "clothes make the man": when the two lads exchange clothes, the prince immediately becomes the pauper and is thus treated like a pauper and, likewise, the pauper is treated like a prince merely because he is dressed in royal robes. The subject matter of The Prince and the Pauper, like the subject matter of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, appealed to Twain because he was writing about an age controlled by nobility and royalty, political divisions which Twain enjoyed deriding; in addition, it was an age of great religious debate and distinction, yet it was filled with unchristian acts, just as it was also an age of enlightenment, where new laws and new concepts of justice were beginning to be popular. But, in this novel, Twain focuses particularly on the many social injustices which are exposed to the new king as he roams his land as a common pauper. The subject matter specifically allowed Twain to utilize his vast knowledge of history and biography, two subjects which occupied much of Twain's reading time, and this novel also allowed him to meditate on the injustices inherent in human nature (or "the damned human race," as it was termed in his later work, The Mysterious Stranger). The subject matter also allowed Twain to indulge in one of his favorite pastimes -- using a language different from that used by either the common people or the educated people; the idioms and dialects of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and the archaic language of The Prince and the Pauper and A Connecticut Yankee are all illustrations of Twain's penchant for utilizing different sorts of language. The Prince and the Pauper is also Twain's most elaborately plotted novel. Seemingly an insignificant incident, the whereabouts of the Great Seal of England, becomes the key to the real identity of the new king. Likewise, Tom's knowledge of Latin and his early role as a friend and counselor to the people of Offal Court influence his actions later as the surrogate king.In his Autobiography, Twain wrote of this novel: "Edward VI and a little pauper exchange places by accident a day or so before Henry VIII's death. The prince wanders in rags and hardships and the pauper suffers the (to him) horrible miseries of princedom, up to the moment of crowning in Westminster Abbey, when proof is brought and the mistake rectified." From this bare sketch, Twain fleshed out the characters and created a masterpiece that has endured and delighted thousands of young readers and adults alike ever since its publication in 1882.

Two boys, one an urchin from London's filthy lanes, the other a prince born in a lavish palace, unwittingly trade identities. Thus a bedraggled "Prince of Poverty" discovers that his private dreams have all come true - while a pampered Prince of Wales finds himself tossed into a rough-and-tumble world of squalid beggars and villainous thieves. Originally written as a story for children, The Prince and the Pauper is a classic novel for adults as well through its stinging attack on the ageless human folly of attempting to measure true worth by outer appearances.
