The Principal Diseases of Lower Vertebrates presents the material published by Heinz H. Reichenbach-Klinke between 1957 and 1962 in three separate volumes as ""Krankheiten der Aquarienfische"" (Alfred Kernen, Stuttgart), ""Krankheiten der Amphibien,"" and ""Krankheiten der Reptilien"" (Gustav Fischer, Stuttgart). The scope of the work has been enlarged with material contributed by E. Elkan who has also done the translation. Representatives of the main groups of parasites affecting fish have been presented as far as possible. The book is organized into three parts covering the diseases of fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. Experience has shown that those who keep, or are interested in, one kind of lower vertebrate will sooner or later also take an interest in one of the other groups. It was therefore thought expedient to include what is at present known of lower vertebrate pathology in one volume, even at the risk of some repetition where fishes, amphibians, and reptiles suffer from similar diseases or are the victims of identical parasites.

While diseases of free-ranging and captive mammalian and avian wildlife species have received considerable interest in the past 25 years, those of amphibians and reptiles (collectively, the herptiles) generally have been assigned lesser importance. The literature concern ing disease in herptiles is widely scattered, consisting chiefly of case reports and prevalence surveys, and with heavy emphasis on captive reptiles. The dynamics of the host-agent-environment relationship have been studied for only a few diseases. This diverse data base is primarily a function of the paucity of investigators whose chief interest is in diseases of herptiles. This first edition represents an effort to bring together some of the diffuse knowledge on infectious and non-infectious diseases of free-ranging and captive herp tiles. In recent years, papillomaviruses in general and human papillo maviruses in particular have been recognized as possible agents of important diseases, including some forms of human cancer. The purpose of this book is to present a concise panorama of the pre sent status of knowledge of this topic. This knowledge is as impor tant to molecular biologists and virologists as it is to clinicians and pathologists. To bridge the gap among these diverse groups of investigators, we conceived of a book covering a broad spectrum of the basic scientific, clinical, and pathological aspects of diseases associated with papillomaviruses. Although the principal thrust of this book is directed at human papillomaviruses, fundamental knowledge of animal viruses is essential to the current understand ing of the molecular mechanisms of cell transformation. For this reason, a chapter on animal viruses has also been included. Some of the experimental work having to do with the elucidation of transformation and other aspects of interaction between the virus and the cell cannot be based on human papillomaviruses because of a lack of suitable experimental models. Hence, some of the chapters dealing with fundamental aspects of viral molecular biol ogy are based on animal models. We were very fortunate in having persuaded a number of distin guished colleagues to contribute to this work.
