The Rebbe's Children by Shmuli Zalmanov Pdf

In this collection of insights from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, compiled from a variety of letters, public addresses and private audiences, the Rebbe provides practical guidelines and advice on a myriad of topics concerning and addressed to Yeshiva students who are attending Chabad-Lubavitch Yeshivas. The book's title - 'The Rebbe's Children' - is inspired by the Rebbe lovingly referring to these Chabad students (otherwise known as 'Tmimim') as his own children. This is apparent in the enthusiastic spirit and fatherly affection exhibited in this compilation.

Rescuing the Rebbe of Belz by Yosef Israel Pdf

Recounts the Holocaust experiences of the Belzer Rebbe, Aharon Rokach (born in 1880), and his brother Mordechai, the Bilgorai Rebbe, who shared his fate. They fled from Belz (in Ukraine) to nearby Sokal and then to Peremyshliany, where several family members were killed. They found temporary refuge in Poland, in Wisnicz and then in Bochnia and Kraków, in both of which the rebbes were interned in the ghettos. In Bochnia the Belzer Rebbe survived in the guise of a "master tailor", while preserving, as he did throughout the Holocaust, his devotion to a life of Torah. After an escape to Slovakia failed, one to Hungary succeeded. In Budapest, the Rebbe was able to publicly lead his followers and other ultra-Orthodox Jews. At times he was sought by the Gestapo, but he was also respected by some Nazis as a "wonder rabbi". Efforts to rescue him centered in Eretz Israel, but also involved Belzer hasidim around the world. In Hungary, the Rebbe attempted to encourage rescue efforts for the remnants of Polish Jewry. In Palestine, Berish Ortner convinced Jewish religious and political figures to grant an immigration certificate to the Rebbe, who then made his way to Palestine. There he and his brother made strenuous efforts to inform the Jewish community about the dire situation in Europe and how they might still save part of Hungarian Jewry. Includes many examples of total religious dedication on the part of the Rebbe and those inspired by him to the point of martyrdom. The last chapter recounts the rescue activities in the Bochnia ghetto-labor camp of Eliezer Landau, who used bribes and cleverness to save the lives of thousands of his fellow Jews.

Who Will Lead Us? by Samuel C. Heilman Pdf

Nearly decimated in the Holocaust and repressed in the Soviet Union, Hasidism has experienced an extraordinary revival. Hasidic communities, now settled primarily in North America and Israel, have reversed the losses they suffered and are growing exponentially. With powerful attachments to the past, mysticism, community, tradition, and charismatic leadership, Hasidism seems the opposite of contemporary Western culture, yet it has thrived in the democratic countries and culture of the West. How? Who Will Lead Us? reveals the answers in the fascinating story of five contemporary Hasidic dynasties and their handling of the delicate issue of leadership and succession. Revolving around the central figure of the rebbe, the book explores two dynasties with too few successors, two with too many successors, and one that believes their last rebbe continues to lead them even after his death. Samuel C. Heilman, recognized as a foremost expert on modern Jewish Orthodoxy, here provides outsiders with the essential guide to continuity in the Hasidic world.

Jewish Tales of Holy Women by Yitzhak Buxbaum Pdf

What is a "holy woman," or a holy man for that matter? According to the Jewish mystics, a holy person is someone who has not lost the holiness that every baby is born with. A holy person is someone who fulfills it. Stories about Jewish holy women have rarely been collected in such an engaging and entertaining form. The tales display a specifically female Jewish spirituality, giving us a peek into a world of devotional beauty that focuses on kindness. These stories of laughter and tears, humility and bravery, striving and trance, have an appeal spanning the denominational spectrum: they are spiritual nourishment for the soul. The rabbis say there are both male and female angels and angels are on earth as well as in heaven. These tales enhance our appreciation of the female angels on earth.

Tuky by Shterni Rosenfeld Pdf

Tuky Gestetner was only six when the Nazis took control of Hungary, and she had to leave her comfortable life and her loving home to go into hiding. Some non Jewish farm families in a small town outside Budapest were well paid to hide her, her little brother and cousin. As the oldest of the three, Tuky felt responsible for the boys, and watched over them the best she could. She promised to remember she was a Jewish child, and Tuky was determined to keep her word. In the long months of hiding, there were some close calls, lots of hungry days, and plenty of worry. This inspiring chapter book can serve as a first introduction to the Holocaust for elementary school children, because the protagonist and her entire family survived those dark days. Bonus material includes family photos, historical note, and a recent interview with Mrs. Tuky (Gestetner) Treitel!

Imagining Holiness by Justin Jaron Lewis Pdf

In Imagining Holiness Justin Lewis offers a radical reappraisal of how we think of Hasidic tales, calling into question received notions of authenticity. He focuses his study on the neglected Hasidic literature of the early twentieth century - primarily the work of Israel Berger and Abraham Hayim Michelson - and the literary and historical dynamics of its emergence, posing questions about its place in Hasidic society, the attitude of the Hasidim towards this literature, and orality in Hasidic tradition as manifested in these Hasidic books. Berger and Michelson wrote in the decade before the First World War, a time of loss and decline for Hasidism. Their books resisted modernity and positioned Hasidism as authentic Judaism but also reflected modern literary trends, expressed tensions within Hasidism itself, and depicted struggles between the soul and body.
