The Red Swan's Neck by David Reed Miller Pdf

Excerpt from The Red Swan's Neck: A Tale of the North Carolina Mountains "Th' boy'd better been t' home savin' his mammy all this trouble o' huntin' him," growled Snags Groucher, an aboriginal crone whose one protruding tooth was her only claim to immortality. "W'at ye talkin' about?" inquired the Rev. William Watchcob, a grey-haired mountaineer preacher, who had finished his "preachin'," and stood talking to a group of parishioners at the church door. He was somewhat out of sorts, notwithstanding his late lurid dissertation on original sin. The rain falling in gentle rhythm without held the few jarring members within doors. "I be talkin' erbout Gyp, that 'bominable wee Stybright cub who's alius givin' his daddy and mammy trouble," Snags replied with unnecessary glow in her sharp, resolute eyes. "It hain't Gyp, it's his daddy that's a doin' it all," snapped Judy Gans,"gettin' drunk an' chasin' his wife an' boy out'n th' house! That's th' ole man: I know him!" "Ef th' ole man do get drunk an' beller aroun' th' house, it's his own house, hain't it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Red Swan by John Bierhorst Pdf

The best of the American Indian myths are works of art, blending form and content into an organic whole in which the great themes of human experience are interwoven much as they are in a memorable short story or novella. But if the underlying themes are similar, the metaphorical and narrative conventions are vastly different; and it is this aesthetic gap that critic John Bierhorst intends to bridge in this companion volume to his well-known anthology In the Trail of the Wind: American Indian Poems and Ritual Orations. Over forty cultures, including the Eskimo, the Iroquois, the Navajo, the Maya, and the Bororo, are here represented by sixty-four carefully selected myths and tales. Yet The Red Swan will be valued not so much for its scope or its quantity as for the superb quality of the stories themselves. Among the classic narratives included are "The Fight of the Quetzalcoatl" (Aztec), "The Rival Chiefs" (Kwakiutl), "The Hungry Old Woman" (Anambe), "Two Friends" (Greenland Eskimo), and "The Red Swan" (Chippewa). A number of the translations, the work of such ethnographers as Franz Boas, James Teit, and George Bird Grinnell, have been left untouched; others have been expertly revised; and some of the selections--all of which deserve to be much better known--appear in English for the first time.

The Dance of the Red Swan by Jeffery Martin Botzenhart Pdf

Amidst a nightmarish Hell, a moment of Heaven is found. In February of 1943, amidst the German Army’s relentless siege of Leningrad, Russia, the destruction of the city and starvation of the population has created an apocalyptic genocide. Yet the dangers within the city are far more perilous. Ilya, a young man forced into prostitution by his brutal father as a means to keep his disabled brother alive, understands this all too well. In his darkest hours, Ilya finds salvation when witnessing the graceful beauty of a ballerina. To him, Tatiana is the red swan of hope, an angel surrounded by devils. As horrific as the city has become, she is an enchanting light within the darkness. As the hours turn desperate, atonement, fate, and revenge become Ilya’s allies to freedom. The intensity of their love affair prompts them to risk all to escape from the carnage of war. And should they fail, Ilya willingly will greet death by having witnessed the sublime dance of the red swan. PUBLISHER NOTE: Historical Romance. 28,700 words. Childhood's Favorites and Fairy Stories by Hamilton Wright Mabie Pdf

Books are as much a part of the furnishing of a house as tables and chairs, and in the making of a home they belong, not with the luxuries but with the necessities. A bookless house is not a home; for a home affords food and shelter for the mind as well as for the body. It is as great an offence against a child to starve his mind as to starve his body, and there is as much danger of reducing his vitality and putting him at a disadvantage in his lifework in the one as in the other form of deprivation. There was a time when it was felt that shelter, clothing, food and physical oversight comprised the whole duty of a charitable institution to dependent children; to-day no community would permit such an institution to exist unless it provided school privileges. An acute sense of responsibility toward children is one of the prime characteristics of American society, shown in the vast expenditures for public education in all forms, in the increasing attention paid to light, ventilation, and safety in school buildings, in the opening of play grounds in large cities, in physical supervision of children in schools, and the agitation against the employment of children in factories, and in other and less obvious ways. Children are helpless to protect themselves and secure what they need for health of body and mind; they are exceedingly impressionable; and the future is always in their hands. The first and most imperative duty of parents is to give their children the best attainable preparation for life, no matter at what sacrifice to themselves. There are hosts of fathers and mothers who recognize this obligation but do not know how to discharge it; who are eager to give their children the most wholesome conditions, but do not know how to secure them; who are especially anxious that their children should start early and start right on that highway of education which is the open road to honorable success.

The Indian Fairytale Book by Henry Schoolcraft Pdf

These Indian fairy tales are chosen from the many stories collected by Mr. Henry R. Schoolcraft, the first man to study how the Indians lived and to discover their legends. He lived among the Indians in the West and around the Great Lakes for thirty years in the first part of the Nineteenth Century and wrote many books about them. When the story-tellers sat at the lodge fires in the long evenings to tell of the manitoes and their magic, of how the little boy snared the sun, of the old Toad Woman who stole the baby, and the other tales that had been retold to generation after generation of red children, time out of mind, Mr. Schoolcraft listened and wrote the stories down, just as he heard them. Contents: The Boy Who Set a Snare for the Sun Manabozho, the Mischief-maker The Red Swan The Celestial Sisters Gray Eagle and His Five Brothers He of the Little Shell Osseoj the Son of the Evening Star The Wonderful Exploits of Grasshopper The Toad-woman The Origin of the Robin White Feather and the Six Giants Sheem, the Forsaken Boy Strong Desire and the Red Sorcerer The Magic Packet The Man With His Leg Tied Up Leelinau, the Lost Daughter The Winter Spirit and His Visitor The Enchanted Moccasins The Weendigoes and the Bone-dwarf The Fire-plume The Bird Lover Bokwewa, the Humpback The Little Boy-man Wunzh, the Father of Indian Corn
