Redefining Retirement by Brigitte Madrian,Olivia S. Mitchell,Beth J. Soldo Pdf

As the leading edge of the 'Baby Boom' generation attains age 60, members of this unusually large cohort born 1946-66 are poised to redefine retirement - just as they have restructured educational, housing, and labor markets in prior days. Looking ahead, their numbers and energy are sure to have a major impact on national pensions, healthcare, and social safety nets. Contributors to this volume note that 'Boomers' will be better off than their predecessors in many ways, having benefited from the long run-up in housing prices, dramatic improvements in healthcare, and the expanding economy. On the other hand, the generation's sheer size will surely squeeze resources and require new approaches to retirement risk management. This volume paints a complex and fascinating picture as Boomers move into retirement. On average they are in better financial and physical health than prior cohorts, and they can be anticipated to fare better than current retirees in absolute terms. Yet the distribution of retiree income and wealth will be less equal than in earlier years, and in relative terms, many Boomers will be less well off than their forebears. Contributors to the volume use many invaluable models and datasets, including the incomparable Health and Retirement Study (HRS) which affords unique insights into the status of mature adults surveyed at the same age and hence same point in their life cycles, but at three different time periods. Analysts offer new evidence about prospects for health and income during retirement, as well as pensions and housing equity, health, portfolio allocation, and financial literacy. This book offers readers an invaluable and first book-length study of Boomers as they march into retirement. As such, it represents an invaluable addition to the Pension Research Council/Oxford University Press series. It will be especially useful for scholars and policymakers seeking to understand retirement preparedness, to actuaries and tax specialists concerned with retirement system regulation, and to plan sponsors interested in the determinants of work and retirement at older ages.

The Retirement Prospects of the Baby Boom Generation by Daniel B. Radner Pdf

This paper examines the financial prospects of the baby boomers in their elderly years. The paper primarily attempts to draw together and summarize results found by other researchers, but a few new estimates are presented. The consensus of the research appears to be the following. Up to this point, the baby boom generation as a whole has a higher economic status than their parents' generation did at the same ages, but this does not hold for some subgroups. When it becomes elderly, the baby boom generation as a whole probably will have a higher economic status than their parents' generation has and will have at those ages, but, again, this may not hold for some subgroups. It is uncertain whether the baby boom generation as a whole will have enough resources in retirement to maintain their preretirement standard of living without increasing their saving or retiring later, but some subgroups will be able to maintain their living standard without changing their behavior.

When Baby Boom Women Retire by Nancy Dailey Pdf

Fewer than 20% of Baby Boom women will experience a secure retirement. Marriage, education, occupation, home ownership—these variables predict their future. Possession of all four indicates retirement security, and absence of any increases risk of old-age poverty. This riveting sociological study also examines the social relations and structures that will determine the retirement experience, options, and decisions for more than 40 million Baby Boom women. These women's material base and social status are examined through the use of empirical data, and the key predictors of their retirement are identified. The massive entry of Baby Boom women into the labor force increases the importance of retirement planning for working women. It comes at a time when existing research models and data are outdated and inadequate to effectively predict their future retirement experience. Over the past 30 years, American men and their spouses have benefited from the linear, undifferentiated model of the traditional male retirement. For the Baby Boom generation, however, the nature of work has changed significantly. The current retirement model may not serve Baby Boom men as well as in the past, let alone Baby Boom women. In contrast, this book offers a new, dynamic model that considers the social and work structures influencing women's lives and that accurately reflects the predictors and parameters of Baby Boom women's retirement.

When Every Day is Saturday by Richard E. Grace Pdf

When Every Day Is Saturday is a how-to book to plan for a happy, meaningful retirement. The Grace Retirement Inventory sets a fast opening pace and prompts thoughtful, focused questions about retirement. Some retirees seem to have failed badly while many others appear to be happy and successful. What was their guide to success? Dr. Grace's research with seven hundred retirees differentiates this book from all others. Six central themes are developed: 1) freedom and leisure, 2) financial independence, 3) separation from work, 4) family and friends, 5) health, and 6) helping others. Readers evaluate their attitude toward each of these themes and this simple measure predicts their happiness in retirement. The writing is concise, interspersed with comments and stories from the lives of current retirees. Inclusion of these vignettes adds hope, inspiration, and a dash of realism to what lies ahead for every working adult.

Baby Boomer's Retirement Prospects by Douglas Holtz-Eakin,Robert Shackleton Pdf

Over the past 15 years, the retirement prospects of the baby-boom generation (people born from 1946 to 1964) have become a source of public concern. Some experts contend that low saving by boomers could limit economic growth in the U.S. & compound the financial pressures that face gov't. programs such as Social Security & Medicare. This CBO study updates & expands on a 1993 CBO report on the retirement preparedness of boomers. It places the baby-boom retirement issues in historical & policy context, describes the methodologies used to analyze that issue, reviews numerous studies of retirement preparedness that have been published since 1993, & draws general conclusions from their findings. What If Boomers Can't Retire? by Thornton Parker Pdf

When it was first published, What If Boomers Can't Retire? predicted what would happen when boomers switched from buying stocks to selling them for retirement income. Since then-and as predicted by author Thornton Parker-stocks have become less important, prices have declined, corporations have shifted their emphasis from inflating stocks to just surviving, and there is currently a recession in full swing. This book shows that there is a bright side, however. If enough boomers work in their later years and preserve their capital, and if the country improves the way it uses capital, the results can lead to fuller lives for millions of people, healthier communities, and more sustainable economies worldwide. Parker details specific actions that individuals and organizations can take to gradually make the shift from the dangerously risky pursuit of phantom wealth to productive investments based on real accomplishments, goods, and services.

You Only Retire Once by Tom Sightings Pdf

We face a lot of choices as we cross the threshold into the wide-open but sometimes-scary world of retirement. That's why some five years ago Tom Sightings started the blog, Sightings Over Sixty, which covers "health, finance, retirement, grown-up children and ... how time flies." He has now collected the best and brightest of the posts, adapted them and organized them into ten categories focused on retirement. The information and advice go beyond the obvious. The observations are amusing and a little offbeat. As Sydney Lagier of Retirement: A Full-Time Job says, "Sightings Over Sixty is my favorite blog. As a fellow retiree, I appreciate his often humorous take on retired life. And as a fellow writer I appreciate the wonderful writing." Sightings is a baby boomer, one of millions who are now starting to retire. Boomers are hitting their 60s. They will live longer than any previous generation and have 20, even 30 more years ahead of them. Some Type-B boomers may simply want to hang around home, read books, putter in the garden. And as Sightings says, "There's nothing wrong with that. You've earned it!" Those who are a little more wired might continue to work -- or volunteer, help raise grandchildren, hike the Pacific Crest Trail. As long as they have the energy, they'll just keep charging ahead. Welcome to the world of retirement. Remember, you only retire once, so you might as well do it right, and live long and prosper.
