However that may be, the inspiration of the Veda, the canon in the strict sense, is confined to Mantra and Brâhmanam, constituting sruti, whilst the Sûtras are only smrti. Accordingly, every S'ak'a had its own Brâhmanam, which in vid'i and art'avada contained the text-book of ritual, and in Vedanta (upanis'ad) that of dogma. The Upanis'ads are thus originally nothing more than the dogmatic text-books of single schools: hence, in so far as they are ancient, we can understand how they treat the same subject-matter more or less differently. In consequence, the problem presented by this ancient civilization tends rather to grow more complex than to become simplified. Its origin is still wrapped in obscurity.
