Firefighting in Roanoke by Rhett Fleitz Pdf
The Roanoke Fire Department's history began in 1882 when the first firefighters were organized by the newly chartered City of Roanoke. The volunteer fire companies such as the Vigilants, Juniors, Friendship, and Alerts provided protection against fire for the city. Roanoke began paying firefighters in about 1903; they were usually drivers to get the horses and steam engines ready for when the volunteers showed up. In 1907, the last of the volunteers disbanded in a show of solidarity to the city, and the Roanoke Fire Department became fully paid. The department doubled in size in 1936 when a second platoon was added and grew again in 1972 when the third platoon was added. The Roanoke Fire Department continued to protect the citizens and visitors of Roanoke City up until 1995 when it merged with Roanoke City EMS to form the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department. In Firefighting in Roanoke, the history of this 125-year-old local service tradition is told.

Downtown Roanoke by Nelson Harris Pdf
Downtown Roanoke celebrates the vibrant history of a community that lies at the heart of the scenic Roanoke Valley. From the saloons and livery stables of the late 19th century to the flagship department stores that attracted hundreds of shoppers in the late 1950s, Roanoke has experienced dramatic change. Over 200 archival images have been compiled to produce a stunning collage of the downtown area over the past century. Included are the American Theater, the Rialto, the Jefferson, and the time-altered streetscapes of Jefferson, Campbell, Kirk, and Church. This collection highlights the storied past of Roanoke through hotels, hospitals, churches, merchants, and special events, including the American Legion parades, the Diamond Jubilee, and the march of the VMI and VPI cadets at Thanksgiving en route to Victory Stadium. Downtown Roanoke is a tribute to the heritage of Southwestern Virginia's leading urban center. Today it remains a metropolitan district alive with culture and commerce, having re-emerged from the challenges of shopping malls and suburbia. The photographs in this collection, many published for the first time, provide a nostalgic look at the progress of Roanoke's historic downtown corridor.

The Chronological History of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association and Its Founders from 1866–1966 by Dr. Linwood Morings Boone Pdf
In The Chronological History of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association and Its Founders from 18661966, Dr. L. Morings Boone has created a historical memorial to the founding fathers of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association. These men played a great part in shaping the destiny of the members of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association. Distinguished in their religious and public life, these men left their stamp on the history of the Negro Church of Northeastern North Carolina and Virginia. Dr. L. Morings Boone has done another tremendous job of restoring a history and legacy of African-American clergy who established a ministerial alliance against the backdrop of racial oppression and dismal circumstances. These faithful and courageous founding fathers led their congregations in such a way as to establish the Roanoke Institute to educate the children of northeastern North Carolina. Dr. Boone has searched tirelessly into the history of the association to discover the passionate work that drove these men against the tyranny of southern discrimination to elevate their communities through their Missionary Baptist efforts and through public education.

The Roanoke Valley in the 1940s by Nelson Harris Pdf
The history of the Roanoke Valley during the 1940s has largely been unexplored until now. This significant decade bore witness to the birth of the local civil rights movement, the impact of World War II and the postwar boom in public projects and private development. The J-Class locomotives, Carver School, Woodrum Field, Victory Stadium, Carvins Cove, the Roanoke Star, the end of streetcars, and the advent of drive-in theaters all marked the decade. Crowds thronged to see the biggest names in radio, film and music at the American Legion Auditorium, the Academy of Music and the Roanoke Theatre, while Major League baseball and professional football brought exhibition games to Maher Field and Victory Stadium. Local historian Nelson Harris provides a detailed account of this dynamic decade along with 300 archival photographs.
