The Roman Campagna (Classic Reprint) by Arnaldo Cervesato Pdf

Excerpt from The Roman Campagna He has thus been able to give a picture of absorbing interest of its scenery and its inhabitants. Happily modifications have already begun to take place in some of the details. The attention called to the misery of the people by this book and by the exertions of the Committee for Schools on the Agro, and the reports of the Red Cross Society, have led to the establishment of a Bureau to protect their interests. Capitalists are be ginning to see that there is an Opening for the profitable investment of money in reclaiming the land and it is to be hoped that soon malaria and the caporali, the two great curses of the country, will be things of the past. This English edition does not profess to be a literal translation of the Italian book. Under the supervision of the author some passages specially addressed to Italian readers have been cut out; others which might have been obscure to foreign readers have been slightly amplified, and the aim has always been to present the author's ideas rather than his actual words. Around the Roman Campagna (Classic Reprint) by George E. Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from Around the Roman Campagna The experience gained some years ago during a week spent in Rome, Sight-seeing all day and studying guide books at night, taught me the wisdom of leaving such a mode of proceedure to the Americans. They carry it to perfection, driving round, doing the churches, inspecting the ruins, and interviewing the celebrities, ticking them 05 their lists after the manner of canvassing a constituency. Old Rome by Robert Burn Pdf

Excerpt from Old Rome: A Handbook to the Ruins of the City and the Campagna This book is intended to serve as a handbook to the actually-existing ruins and monuments of ancient Rome and the Campagna. It is divided into topographical sections for the convenience of travellers visiting Rome, and the monuments which exist in each section have boon briefly described, and a summary given of their history and archaeological value. The introductory section contains general remarks upon the site, monumental history, and architecture of Rome; and in a section prefixed to Chapter IX. the nature of the soil and configuration of the hills and valleys of the district surrounding the city are stated. In the Appendix to the eighth chapter will be found a list of the chief monumental antiquities in the museums, galleries, and other public places. This has been thought to be useful, as these are often difficult to recognise from being mixed with so many other attractive and important objects of more modern art and history. All speculative conjectures as to the probable sites or constructions of ancient buildings or places have boon avoided. Such questions require more space than can be spared in so small a volume, and have been fully treated of in my larger work, "Rome and the Campagna." I have confined myself in this handbook to a brief topographical, archaeological, and historical description of each existing ruin or monument. The references given have been restricted to modern treatises and to a few of the more rarely read Greek and Latin authors. Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by British School at Rome Pdf

Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 3 The publication of a third volume of 'papers' by the British School at Rome may fairly be taken as evidence of its continued activity and usefulness. The first paper contains a further instalment of the valuable work which the assistant-director, Mrf Ashby, is doing for the recovery of the lost history of the Campagna Romana. In this department of study Mr. Ashby has won for himself a well-deserved reputation as an indefatigable explorer, and a scrupulously accurate observer. It may be added in proof of the estimation in which Mr. Ashby is held by foreign scholars, and also of the friendly relations existing between the British School and the other foreign schools in Rome, that some of his shorter papers have been published by the French School in their Me'langes. Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by British School at Rome Pdf

Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 1 The title of this volume sufficiently indicates its character. The two monographs which it contains are the first fruits of the work done by the newly founded British School at Rome, and the hope of the Committee is that they will be followed in due course by many other similar papers, and will form a series not unworthy to be compared with the Mélanges of the French School at Rome. Of the two papers, that by the Director on S. Maria Antiqua will no doubt be found the most interesting by the majority of readers, but Mr. Ashby's possesses an importance of its own as a contribution to the task of reconstructing the Roman Campagna as it was before desolation and silence fell upon it. Rome and the Campagna by Robert Burn Pdf

Excerpt from Rome and the Campagna: An Historical and Topographical Description of the Site, Buildings, and Neighbourhood of Ancient Rome For the construction of this index and of the general index I am indebted to the kindness of the Rev. I must also express my obligations to Cavaliere Rosa, director of the French excavations at Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rambles in Rome: An Archeological and Historical Guide to the Museums, Galleries, Villas, Churches, and Antiquities of Rome and the Cam by S. Russell Forbes Pdf

Excerpt from Rambles in Rome: An Archeological and Historical Guide to the Museums, Galleries, Villas, Churches, and Antiquities of Rome and the Campagna The object of our work is to describe in a practical manner the points of interest in and around the Eternal City. One half of our life has been spent in studying Rome on the spot. For our guides we have had the classic authorities and recent excavations; and it has been with us a labour of love to work out from our authors the meaning of the ruins uncovered, and impart the information thus obtained to others.
