Greatcoats and Glamour Boots by Carolyn Gossage Pdf

Women in the military? To many, never was too soon. But by 1940, British women were out "doing their bit" for the war effort, and Canadians battled for that same right. Young Canadian women wanted to serve their country, "to free a man to fight," as the recruiting posters urged. By the war’s end almost 50,000 of them were in the forces. Carolyn Gossage has compiled a fascinating collage of anecdotal and documentary material. The colourful story of Canada’s "forgotten women" - those who volunteered for service during World War II in the RCAF Women’s division, the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) and the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (Wrens) - entertains and enlightens.

We Flew, We Fell, We Lived by Philip LaGrandeur Pdf

Torture, survival and escape. These three elements encompass We Flew, We Fell, We Lived, which recounts the experiences of Royal Canadian Air Force ex-prisoners of war and evaders from the Second World War. Forty Canadian officers and men from Bomber Command offer their personal accounts of the German treatment of allied air force personnel and the organization of PoW camps. The first of four sections has each PoW's story arranged by the camp in which he was held. The notorious Great Escape is covered in detail, based on the testimony of several of the Canadians involved. The evader section includes Canadians shot down behind enemy lines who escaped through Sweden, the Comet Line to Spain, and through Italy. One man gives a riveting description of his torture in the infamous Fresnes prison in Paris and his survival of the Buchenwald concentration camp. The last section covers the forced marches of air force PoWs in the last months of the war.Together, all the stories create a complex expose of PoW culture illustrated by two hundred photographs, maps, and artwork from various Stalag lufts (many previously unpublished). Never have there been so many comprehensive personal accounts of PoWs in one book.

Cream of the Crop by Allan Douglas English Pdf

A unique offering to military studies critiquing the effectiveness of the Royal Canadian Air Forces' aircrew preparations for war, a selection system and training program which became a modern model. English (war studies, Royal Military College of Canada) traces the development of aviation psychology and the treatment of psychological casualties in air combat, paying attention to the controversy of diagnosing aviators as "lacking moral fibre" and its effect on morale. By exploring these issues, the author includes the human dimension as an influence on air force effectiveness, as much as material and technological innovations. Includes some photographs. In Times of War: Prince Rupert 1939-1945 by Sue Harper Rowse Pdf

Immediately following Pearl Harbour, the United States shipping facilities in the Pacific were running at full capacity, but it was still not enough to combat the serious Japanese threat. At this critical juncture, Prince Rupert, located in British Columbia, Canada, was placed at America's disposal, to ship troops and materials to Alaska to fend off the enemy. It was, as many called it, an American Invasion. With Japanese submarines lurking off of Prince Rupert, thousands of Canadian Army, Navy, and Air Force, were posted to man the fort defence system, fly reconnaissance missions, and protect the dry dock and shipyard, all vital to the Pacific war effort. All eyes were peeled for the enemy. The City was truly at war. Drawing from a diverse field of information, making use of published, primary, first hand recollections, and photographs, this book puts the events and developments of these years all together into one definitive source.

The Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force: Canadian airmen and the first world war by Sydney F. Wise Pdf

The first of three volumes of the Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force, this book provides the definitive story of Canadian airmen in World War I and, moreover, a revisionist account of the war in the air. Organized topically, this volume begins with an overview of military aviation in Canada prior to 1914, as successful aircraft experiments like Baldwin's and McCurdy's Silver Dart are set against Defence Minister Sam Hughes' rejection of any government air policy. Financial timidity and political uncertainty subsequently decreed that the 20,000 Canadians who trained for, or fought in, history's first air war would have no air force of their own but would fly in the British flying services. The sections which follow show that Canadians excelled in every aspect of the air war. Indeed, although the First World War never saw an exclusively Canadian squadron in action and no Canadian rose to a command above Group level, Professor Wise has been able to write a full account of the war in the air from the Canadian perspective. Recruitment and training, the maritime air war, the strategic bombing of Germany and the defence of Great Britain, as well as action on the Western Front, in Italy, and in Macedonia, are all covered in depth. Each section reveals the complexity of air operations, as tactics, strategy, and aircraft evolved with astonishing speed. The exploits of remarkable fighter aces such as Billy Bishop, Raymond Collishaw, D.R. MaccLaren, and W.G. Barker, and of bomber leaders like R.H. Mulock, are set in the context of the air war and the many thousands of Canadians who served with them. In his conclusion Wise traces the development of Canadian government air policy to the year 1920, during which time the first Canadian air force was born and quickly died. In analysing this major step in Canada's entry into the air age he lays the foundation for postwar civil expansion and the formation of the RCAF. Illustrated with specially prepared colour and sketch maps and over 200 photographs, many of them published here for the first time, this book should prove invaluable to the military historian and of wide appeal to the aviation enthusiast and general reader alike. The other volumes in the Official History of the Royal Canadian Air Force are The Creation of a National Air Force by W.A.B. Douglas (out of print) and The Crucible of War, 1939-1945 by Brereton Greenhous, et al. (available).

No Prouder Place by David L. Bashow Pdf

The Allied bombing of the Third Reich and its allies was part of Britain's overall war strategy to take the offensive to the enemy. It created a second front that bled off resources from the enemy's Soviet campaign, involving massive amounts of manpower and material just to address the threat. No Prouder Place provides a fresh and objective look at the bombing campaign by emphasizing the highly significant role it played in defeating the Axis powers. The story tells of sustained courage in the face of daunting odds as well as a celebration of the Canadian aircrew experience and its place in wartime Bomber Command.
